Title: Huge B26 Raid Sunday night
Post by: Randy1 on June 24, 2013, 07:04:21 AM
Was a Rook on the receiving end of massive B26, low level, raid last night.  It was great fun for both sides.  After the 26s dropped their bombs. they went into fighter mode.  Planes were going down everywhere in the heat of the battle.  I got a couple before they got me.

I tip my hat to the ones that put that together.

:airplane: We, the Devil Dogs, and friends were grabbing a "Bish" medium size field while this was going on! Wish the Bish and Knights would put up large bomber formations like I do every night, that way we could get in on the "feel" for large bomber formations attacks! Been in this game 3 years, 4 this fall, and the most bombers I have seen yet, besides the ones I put together, is 3, 3 plane formations of B-17's about a year ago. Is there some reason the Bish and Knights don't up bomber formations against the Rooks? If you'all just let us peasants know when you are going to put one up, I promise we won't bring anything but SBD's and B5N's to attack you!! LOL

ET37 ive been on when bishops have done 40 sets of lancs to bomb 2 gv bases and they still didnt flatten everything lol. The 91st bomb group use to do some ace bomber runs as well 7 or 8 sets of b17s with escorts was fun being on either side with them havnt seen one lately though.

That was from the "Battle Over Germany" scenario.

Here are a few more.

Finding bombers and some escorts.

Receiving a bit of defensive fire.

Finding the remains of another bomber group that was already shot up by a squadron of 190's.

Running into a lot of escorts.  All of the faint black dots are escorts, too.

One of the many melees that developed near bombers.

One of the many fights that went from 30k down to the deck.

If you haven't ever flown in a scenario, please join us sometime to see what one is like.  We welcome and appreciate having new players try it out.

Heh!  It was more foolhardiness than fortitude.  I couldn't set up a better run because escort was locked onto me, and I decided to make a run rather than dive out without attacking.

those escorts were out of position Brooke...

those escorts were out of position Brooke...

A harsh critic!   ;)

Actually, the escorting in Battle Over Germany was generally good and disciplined.

In the pic I posted showing lots of escorts, that was more typical of how they were initially.  They'd have a couple of squads above and behind the bombers -- those are the guys who make sure attacking fighters get only one pass, and they are in decent position.  Then there are squadrons posted left, forward left, front, forward right, and right of the bombers.  That is good position for intercepting planes like FW 190's coming in from sides or ahead.  They would also have some squadrons ranging around trying to intercept our slower, lower bomber destroyers farther out from the bombers.  Usually pretty thorough.

Now, we were working to counter that, of course, so there ended up being situations eventually where escorts got stripped or pulled out of position.  When I fly axis, one of my jobs usually is to go find bombers, track them, and to disrupt escort, so a lot of my screen shots are from that perspective.

Oh, and invariably in these events, the allies try at least a 1-2 times to sneak bombers in unescorted (usually with some fighter sweeps, that the axis works to avoid, and positioning a group of bombers to look like a fighter sweep while there is an obvious heavily-escorted group of bombers elsewhere).  Some of my shots can be from that situation, too.
