What is a HO? I have returned to the MA recently after a long break and I have found that there are many people claiming HO.
It seems much more prevalent than I remember. Maybe you can help me define what is considered lame gameplay.
So after shooting down SkyRock(video below) I was accused of the dreaded HO along with insults.
Check it out and let me know is that a HO? Is that even a cheap shot?
(Video is not my usual standard)

IMO, yea, he had a shot too and didn't take it because he wanted a decent fight. Then again, on your end, you're pilot wounded so you wanted to end the fight quickly, but he had no way of knowing so....HO forgiven.
-
No HO. Anything after 1st merge is fair game.
-
HOing (Head On) is a legitimate shot. It's insanely wreckless since your opponent can shoot you as well, but If you die in a head on pass it's because you flew into their guns. Next time don't fly into their guns. Head On shots are the easiest to avoid.
I used to be one of those that thought HO shots were dweeby, but then I realized that it was a very commonly used tactic for planes that are built for it. If a zeke is insane enough to go head on with my P-47 then I'd be stupider than him if I didn't shoot him.
-
so Latrobe, do you think that was a HO though? It was pretty much borderline but that's how the cards fell. I die a lot like that in game but usually put it down to a bit of lag or something.
-
Meh, to me, if a both pilots have a shot on each other and one doesn't take it while the other does, my respect goes out to the one who didn't take it. Especially in a match up like in the vid Spit vs Ki84.
410 vs Ki43? And the 410 HOs? Fine, it's basically his only chance of winning. But Spit vs Ki84 is fair game. And for one to Take advantage of the other's mutual rivalry relationship? That's lame.
But, the video shows kilo2 pilot wounded, so he was going to die if he didn't take the shot, so in this case, it's understandable. I personally would've just held my fire and see how long I could last in a situation like that. I prefer a long, good fight that results in a loss than a short lame win.
-
Feh. I saw a shot opportunity that was taken, and taken well. Care not what it looked like. :aok :salute
-
The only time I get frustrated with HO's is when you are outnumbered, and you have to spend the entire time avoiding HO's, until you eventually can't, or never get offensive. If you have the advantage, you shouldn't go for a HO, it would be idiotic if your life was at stake. I know it's a game, but again, it's a bad idea to go for a HO when outnumbering someone...but if that's what they choose, there's not much you can do. Those are the kind of HO's I'd rather not see though.
-
My favorite kills are when people dive away from a HO situation, then a roll, apply hard rudde and blow them away
But what do I know!
If I find myself alone against more than 2 guys, I'll ho till the last con, at which point I'll fight :D
Generally tho, hoing is frowned upon and gives people a bad stigma :old:
-
how could you think he was not able to face shoot you? Woulda been pretty easy had he chosen.. but like Titanic said.. you were pw'd so, meh..
funny you bring the video here with that music.. another one? Was he like your 2nd? :D
-

I'm with titanic on this one. It looked like he had a shot too but decided not to take it. He probably thought you wouldn't shoot either. The only one anyone can blame their deaths on is themselves. My advice to him is always assume everyone is going to take any shot they can get. If you're making a turn and you see you're going to be going head on and you don't want to risk a head on shot but aren't sure if the other guy will hold his fire.. assume he won't. Don't continue the turn and put yourself in a head on pass, change your flight path so they can't make a shot.
Nothing wrong with a Head On shot, complaining to other people for your death is.
-
Clean kill. I would have taken that shot.
For skyrock I would have chosen the same path of tactic but you gotta watch you dot cross the enemy's guns. You have to throw a negative push for a second to take you out of line and then set you self up with a throttled down reverse.
-
A HO, in my mind, occures when you fire your guns at the enemy from a possition in which either he did have, or could have reasonably gotten, guns on you as well.
Typically its intentional, which is when it becomes bad form, but if you just happen to be heading strait at someone in a furball, by all means open fire. Its not the act that is annoying, its the useage of it as a tactic, since it does largely leave things up to chance.
-
I love watching the HO screamers try to HO a buff formation at 30k and fail.
It takes two to HO.

I've always thought it odd that in this game it is considered more honourable to shoot someone in the back..... :D
I have no problems with someone trying to face shoot me, it usually gives me an opportunity to set up a lead turn and gain angles. If I can get a guns solution on someone before they can on me I have no problem with pulling the trigger either.
-

the front quarter shot is probably the most mis-understood shot in the game. So many people who close the turn late :cry about it.
-
F3 Noob
-
A lot of times these old eyes can't see the direction of a plane in a quick turn situation or this old thick head is slow to realize then resolve an unexpected HO.
Latrobe has caught me a couple of times doing an Immelmann from below and in front of me for a HO shot that he doesn't miss. I envy his skills. It is an honorable maneuver in my book.
HO is part of the game like alt pickers like messiah. I hate loosing to both maneuvers but it is my lack of skill that is the problem. I am doggone sure going to pull the trigger in any HO situation.
I wonder if part of the HO sensitivity is really associated with ramming?
-
Not even close to a HO ... this gets a single "bah." If I had a fight that went that long, with the wingman staying out of it, and lost my WING, for pete's sake, I would simply have saluted both of them for the good fight and sportsmanship.
You have to have a pretty big head to say you were "HO'd", I can just see 200 now. You Ho'd me, no I did not, yes you did, did not, I filmed it, go ahead and post the video, the world will vindicate me.
Bah. :old:
Play the game.
-
not even close to a ho...just tell the guy to stfu and do his thing. any numbnuts that doesn't know the difference between an off angle deflection shot and a ho deserves to be ho'd every single time.

I've always thought teaching new players to ho whine was an extreme disservice to the community.

Some rook a while back screamed at me for shooting his 262. I said I had an angle you didn, no ho.
Although I do ho 262's, I mean who doesn't :P
-
Technically a HO, yes. Not a blatant one though.
Tell Skyrock that the gun just went off and you don't know why. Maybe you hit a bump or somethin. :)
-
looked like skyrock failed to add some sort of roll or turn onto his vertical climb. He left it a bit late to get his wing onto you for a successful reverse and you just timed your firing time perfectly as he flew past.
So the HO bag council rules no HO. Owned! :P
-
Hmm, dodge the HO and die....take the shot presented because the adversary maneuvered to avoid the HO...
I'd rather be dead and cool than alive and uncool.

If you watch the film changeup you can see SR left it too late to try and move. Also kilo has a PW and TBH anyone jousting with a PW is going to take any shot / kill they can before ending up back in the tower.

Agreed. That moment of decision when facing a head on opponent...is he going to take this shot? Is he??? Is he?? I can't wait anymore because it looks like he is. Yes, he waited too long. But because SR was early under his nose and Sukov couldn't see SRs position in space, he was going to pull the trigger either way.
Victory yes....but a good one? Meh.
I would have done the same thing with a pilot wound.

Asking dumb questions for the sake of hearing your fingers rattle the keyboard forces me to ignore you the point that you question your own existence.
Please google another appropriate picture. You haven't posted enough of them.

Huh. Pretty sure your ability to ignore (if you really possess such) doesn't faze
my self-awareness in the least.
Aw man. I hurt your feelings. Yaknow, when you post something from an 'either/or'
perspective and forget to mention a third obvious option while you're going on about
how cool you are when you die to head-ons, it's kinda obvious those were the only
options you were aware of. I didn't mean to embarrass you and put ya on the defensive.
But I am quite impressed at your post-impress us posturing and all. I'll buy you a beer
when I drive through Lantana or if you happen to make it to Coppell. :D

Sukov ran out of Rope attempt energy, and I got an angle on his 6 and shot him...not good enough, he then pulled hard for the HO... I could have shot him in the face as well, but didn't... What is silly to me is that anyone would believe it wasn't a headon shot... much less bring the film in here and ask others for clarification, if you don't know that this is a HO shot, then you still have plenty of learning to do! Sukov, As much as you were hunting me over there, it seemed you wanted a fight, but after I B-slapped you on the overshoot the first time you ran out of rope attempts, it was obvious that your ego couldn't allow another owning, so... you did what many pilots do that are outclassed, you start pulling to HO... it is what it is!
Edit: I didn't watch the film or finish reading the thread before I posted this.... having a pilot wound I understand why he went HO... but I didn't know that at the time... I was merely reacting to him hunting me down over there and playing lameass ropeyboy then running when that didn't pan out... it's not the first time he's done it, and won't be the last, I call him HO boy, right after he runs out of E and I can't call him ropeyboy anymore and I think both names fit nicely! :aok

Another one bites the dust.

there's a fine line between a ho and a front 1/4 shot. and that line is defined by the person that died. I will rocket vulch you, bomb you, ho you, throw my purse at you, I will do whatever it takes to get you down.
this is not a gentleman's game where there's rules on how to kill somebody. because if there's rules, please guide me to them. if you dont like it when I spray on your face then turn around, i can spray on your rear too if that's how you like it :).

ya gotta love spittards talking crap. As a whole they are the most unwilling to challenge themselves group in the game. If Midway was to fly anything that required pilot input and thinking, he'd be nothing more than a high alt target balloon. Kind of like me in a jug right now.

I don't know what your in-game name is but if you fly a variety of planes I can tell this much about you:
1. you want to learn
2. losing a fight doesn't bother you that much
3. you like a challenge
4. a good fight or matchup is more enjoyable to you than a easy kill
I certainly have more respect for someone like you than someone who flies easy mode every single sortie, constantly trolling and throwing around names of past and present uber pilots in hopes of being known as having some kind of brotherly fraternal bond with them.
-
I really enjoy a good dogfight. Trading angles for a good shot (I know even this is controversial) brings the greatest game satisfaction IMHO. Getting HO’d on the initial merge is not a dogfight and complaining about HO’s is futile. Avoiding HO’s is easier when the closure rate is high but when both planes are slow it’s not so easy.
:salute all!
-
ITs about the fight and getting the angles for me. For some its about the immediate satisfaction of the kill, for some, well they just wanna feel like they are good at something, so they resort to ganging and ho'ing....
different strokes for different folks...
... I wish I could shoot with the pilots 45 from the cockpit when it is open... (most fights devolve into a rolling scissors where people are not flying fast).

This is a HO>(https://imageshack.com/scaled/large/7/3hpg.jpg)

A HO is exactly that a HEAD ON .. if neither player diverted from their path then a collision will occur. Both players should be able to fire and get hits. So many people recently are calling anything within the front quarter a HO when it isn't. I often get into situations where the opponent is very close to getting his guns on me but hasn't closed the loop, but I do have a gun solution and I fire. It is often seen as a HO when it is not.

I was gonna go with "special", but I like this write up better. :D
Of all the planes in AH, the only ones I have not flown are the Tempest and the Ki-43. The plane I tend to fly the most is the A6M3, so it could be said that's my preferred fighter. Otherwise, I actually don't have a preferred fighter, so it's all over the board. I'm a bomber guy, what can I say. :) I did do all of last tour (aside from the 6 times I was in a field gun, 0 gv's) in just the He-111 after all. But that doesn't mean I'm afraid to take up a fighter. :D

Great responses. With the definition of HO always changing I thought it would be best to pose the question to the community. It seems now front quarter deflection shots are falling under the HO umbrella. At least for some people.
In my opinion having watched the film and hearing the responses I think it was a lame shot but in the same circumstances I would take it again.

You did shoot me down in the sortie prior and to my understanding it was a good fight. I should have mentioned it earlier because I thought you might bring it up even though it really has no bearing on the sortie mentioned in the original post. There was no "hunting" you that is your ego speaking. You have a bad habit of exaggerating circumstances to feed that ego.
Both times I did not run. In fact I turned around to meet you. Have I ran before? Yes.
I do enjoy roping people.

I agree with this statement, it was lame because you knew who it was and you knew you were getting a fight out of it... but I would actually agree that taking the shot when pilot wounded is acceptable and probably your only chance given the circumstances, although I'd damn near rather to bleed out than beat someone I was having a good fight with by shooting them nose on when they could shoot me also. Sukov, no problems with you bud, stay out of the lameness, and into the fight! :aok

Every shot is legit. Every tactic is legit. I don't protest, single-out or condemn. I don't brag or parade my arse. I don't
hold back any shot or tactic, either.
I developed the ability to dodge as early as flying with VF-17 in AW. It's not a hard skill to master nor an amazing skill

Basically, whiners may wanna believe they have a legitimate gripe but it's really a case of more ego than they can afford.

Arlo, I'm glad your giving your 10cents, but that's all it's worth to me! I look for a good fight, and face shooting is generally very unstisfying to me... I mean I face shot for the first 3-6 months I played the game just trying to get a kill, then getting a kill that way simply lost all luster, so I moved on... it's an approach to the game, and I simply cannot deny that I respect certain approaches more than others, that is apparently a 180 from others who play the game and there the rift is cemented.... So, I have fought Sukov before in the DA canyon fights, where many of my like-minded pals gather to fight, and most of us that gather there feel the same way about face shooting... so I don't expect it out of certain players... I will expect it out of you, and will probably throw in the "HOtwit" comment if you're ever lucky enough to kill me using your approach! I'm sure you will respond by calling me a whiner about it, but I will expect that from you also! Thank you for your 10cents, which won't buy a piece of gum these days! :aok

This is an issue that arises fairly often: We are having a good fight and now down on the deck, things are getting slow. We end up nose to nose. Is he gonna shoot me or not? If I roll out, he could take the shot. Used to never take the shot and was often burned for it. Now I will consider taking the shot. If it's a Spit XVI, I am taking the shot.
