Title: Nurburgring gets a visit from a little aussie Ute (pickup)
Post by: Fish42 on June 30, 2013, 12:25:47 AM
VF SS V Redline Ute posts 8m 19.47sec lap at Nürburgring; sets world record for a commercial and utility vehicle.

The vehicle that scored the result was a product-correct engineering test Ute that was being used in Europe for validation purposes before taking on the "Green Hell." The record-setting model is basically a stock car, except some negative camber dialed into the front wheels and the removal of the speed limiter. Before setting the record, the Ute ran flawlessly for seven days and 35 grueling laps in total. All it needed was a new set of tires and brakes.

I wish HSV could get their 430kW, 740 Nm GTS over there to play!

I always wondered why the ford ute never showed up there with it's big horsepower in either inlne six (417hp) or the mod motor V8s.

I would think, "yoot"....

As in "utility".

That is a great time....

A 2010 Dodge Viper ACR holds the record for a factory production, street legal vehicle at 7:12:13. Both Viper and Corvette will be back to attempt to reset that record.

It's down to tire choice now.

If you are using the current michelin pilot sport cups with tread shaved to 6/32, you could probably go fast in a porsche 914.

There is a lot of money in having the fastest car and fastest tire so I would think there is a lot of money changing hands and lobbying by manufacturers to get a quasi race tire certified as "DOT approved".

It's only a matter of time before someone brings some hoosiers that sports a dot stamp runnning a treadwear number of 40 where the michelin pilot sport cup is now 80.....which I consider unacceptable on the street since I see them get replaced every oil change on a non-track driven car.

Eventually, there will be a spec. of tread and compound that will be considered "mininum" concerning treadwear in which the lap time is considered official or not because we're already seeing accidents here in florida on pilot sport cup equipped cars because of the frequent rain.

That said, the lexus lf-a does it only 2 seconds slower on a tire with a treadwear or 140.

Ute is the basis for the word Utah. My parents live on/near the Ute Reservation in the mountains of Utah, near Roosevelt Uncompadre tribe.

boo.

Ah, the Commodore Ute is not named after an area. Its an abbreviation for "utility" or "coupé utility" – is a term used originally in Australia and New Zealand, then also South Africa to describe passenger vehicles with a cargo tray in the rear.

We call most pickups over here "Utes" But the term is for a normal passenger car that just happens to have a bed back.

Not a bad time for something you can chuck a couple bags of concrete in the back of!

That ute looks like a holden commodore with the back chopped down, like an el camino.  Of course it goes fast.  It's a world class high performance sedan with the C pillar removed, no different than a 5 series beemer without a c-pillar would be.  I hope Holden is allowed to benefit from the redesign of the chassis that chebby is using to turn the commodore into the chebby SS.  Same basic chassis but several hundred pounds lighter.  If the performance and handling of my G8 is any measure, the chebby SS and any commodore based on the updated chassis will be really nice.

Small correction but only from Aussie pride <G>

An el-camino is actually like a holden ute, the first holden ute was produced in 1948, whereas the el camino was 10 years later :)

Agree with you about the new chassis, there's going to be some very nice machines created in the next few years.

The first Ute was made back in the early 1930s and they are now a part of Aussie culture.

And racing them is not new to us!

We have so many of them, we have musters for them!

A lot of the Utes that show up are BnS.
