I use hotmail for email instead of my ip providers email sometimes. Hotmail has changed to outlook and wants a phone number now for me to access my account. I don't think they need a phone number or alternate email address. At least I am really reluctant to give them one.
If I were to switch, what would you guys think would be a decent email provider, or is there any anymore?

I use Gmail although I don't trust Google.
Yahoo want a phone number now too. F them.

Gmail asks for a phone number, but you do not have to provide it.
And you should be concerned about Google/Gmail. I was sending an email the other day, and in the body of the message, I typed, "I am sending you the attachment....".
Only I forgot to actually attach the file. Never fear! Google popped a warning message, when I hit "Send", as follows:
"You said you were going to send (name of person) an attachment, yet you did not attach a file. Would you like to try again?"
Two things. No where in the email was the real name of the person Google showed me in the error. And, of course, telling me i was sending an attachment, which I forgot to send, was a bit worrisome as well.
This weekend I am going to play with it to see how much they really are comprehending in a message.
At this point, I would pay for an alternative if I knew the alternative would stay out of my business.

Were you emailing someone from your contacts that you had their actual name on their address book entry? Or was it another gmail address?
-
It was not another Gmail address, and I have zero contacts. I never, ever save anything to any type of contact list, anywhere.

Can I ask why?
boo
PS I am pretty alarmed at NSA and their activities, though I am pretty computer illiterate.

Most likely incase the email gets hacked into, because the hacker will send links to everyone in your contacts with trojan virus' but it would be under YOUR name. :(

I've been using yahoo for well over a decade. No issues other than I don't care for the "new" format of their screen, but it still works.

I find myself using google anything less and less cept for the Email I use for business. And I even use that all that much as I prefer actual person to person contact.
Even Google search is going down the tube as I find myself getting more the results google feels like giving me on searches rather then the results I'm actually looking for

Rush Limbaugh always talks about Reagan.com, 40 dollars a mo and never scans reads or sells your info.
IMO all the free providers are doing something underhanded, or it wouldn't be free.

you can give them the number I have been giving for years, it's easy to remember, 867-5309.

Excuse me, thats 40/year, not month

all these requirements for phone numbers on email accounts goes back to the NSA and their requirement to track everything and be able to sort and correlate emails with your phone records. Big brother is here and is watching. The constitution is a joke.

If you give google a phone number, it may send account security codes there for changing passwords and stuff. If you no longer use that phone number, it may be re-used so whoever gets that number may receive google text messages regarding your account.
Skuzzy, I read an article outlining what google does with gmail. Apparently somewhere in the license or in terms of use or whatever, it is clear that it scans all email and adds/associates everything in every email you send and receive within the google associational database. It's mostly for ad research and targeting but as you found out, the data they're skimming from your emails and storing is used to build a very complete picture of you and your email correspondents.
The main lesson though is that they scan, store, and associate everything from every email. At some point you will probably be able to type the email without specifying the recipient and it will be able to accurately recommend recipients based on the email content.
I use earthlink because they bought out mindspring who bought out micron.net who bought out... you get the picture. I pay about $5/month so I can keep the same email address and webspace I've had for nearly 18 years. I have their basic email package which is about 6 email addresses, webmail access, some web and ftp space, and a couple of other features I don't use much. I also have a yahoo and a gmail account for when I don't want to give out my primary email address, but the yahoo account keeps being used by retards signing up for game or porn accounts so I do have to occasionally use it to un-subscribe to whatever service those idiots have used my email account for.

I thought it was $40/year, not per month. And yea, privacy is a key advertised feature of that service.
I ran my own mail server using dyndns for a while and it worked but it was a hassle to maintain. dyndns is an awesome service, and you can even get domains "free" as long as you maintain them. If you quit using them then they revert back to being available to other people. You can pay to lock them down for your use, but at that point you might as well just buy a regular domain from a big hosting service and use those features which may also include email. I managed my AH squad's domain for a few years when we were an active squad and it was really nice to have our own domain and an internet hosting service for webpages and email.
-
I could, easily, run my own server. I have given thought to renting out a server at a colo, getting a domain, and using it. I would not use a hosting service, as I would want my own dedicated hardware to run as I see fit.
Still thinking about it. I would need to find 50 or 60 people willing to pay $20/year to help cover the cost.

i've always been paranoid about googles mail.....and would be interested to know what you find out.

Well the Iranians have solved the problem of the NSA monitoring their online traffic. http://www.thejournal.ie/iran-national-email-983302-Jul2013/
Everybody gets and official government email account. I love one of the comments below it: No doubt the(Iranian) Government will be using this service to spy on its population & arrest those not supporting terrorism
:aok
I have to say I've been gradually minimising my interaction online lately not because of worries about the being spied on by governments. Not that I've anything to hide but I don't like mega multinational companies knowing more about me than my wife.
Bit brother was fiction, this isn't.

the nsa thing...and i'm trying to dance carefully here.......is nothing new. it's been going on for years. i'd heard about it at least 5 years ago on one of those "conspiracy" type shows. after watching it, i googled(yea i know) it, and found it was pretty scary, and true. there are NO communications other than face to face that they do/can not monitor/track/listen/record. even land lines eventually end up as air waves, and they go though there too.
back then, when i'd mention this stuff to people they all called me paranoid.
sorry if i stepped over a line there.......trying not to.....
