I'd say get off my lawn but I have never in my life heard anything as horrendous as autotune. Even when it's not used conspicuously  - which is unlistenable - a lot of pop music seems to run every vocal through it anyway so it lines up perfectly in a way with the music that makes it seem soullessly  robotic.

And not robotic in the good Gary Numan way.

Pretty much.
The good old hard rock died with the LedZep. But there was heavy metal, as its best! Pity it disappeared around when i was born. So i grew up on power metal. But the last rock/metal albums i really enjoyed was Helloween's Gambling with the Devil and Megadeth's United Abominations. Even the melodic pop died (lol) as there is electro and dubstep everywhere. Where this world is going?

Mindblowing solo, by the way.

You're comparing mainstream music today with non-mainstream music in the '70s and '80s. Please don't make me find an example of mainstream '70s music... Pretty please with sugar on top!

Music today is fine, if you just turn of the radio and search it out.

There's no doubt the music of our generation is fantastic and still popular today. But I don't really listen to it much anymore. I've heard Smoke On The Water, Stairway to Heaven, And IronMan at least a thousand times. I like finding the new fresh stuff, although I have to admit that what I consider good new music is hard to find these days. And that's in all category's of music, whether it be reggae, rock, country, jazz......

One of my favorite bands recently reformed, they were originally active back in the 80's and put out a single album before going their separate ways (a 2nd album was released after they split).

For people looking for a good dose of rock 'n roll I would heavily recommend the True Believers, one music critic once described them as an army of guitars.  They're a little older now but never count a bunch of old punks out.

We live in an age where anyone who wants to make music a certain way can do it and find and audience, through the internet, get signed by a tiny independent label and end up touring the world without ever having an album or single come close to charting on the Billboard 200, whereas in the past they would die due to lack of a local scene and major label support. It doesn't matter what kind of music you like, what kind of weird fetishes or mixtures you want to hear, you can find at least one band doing exactly what you want, to an almost custom tailored sounding degree, if not a whole movement or scene based around it.
If you can't find 'modern music' you like, the only fault lies in your own close mindedness and/or technical illiteracy, especially with the popularity of retrospection in music (and everything else for that matter) in the internet age.

The Lumineers are pretty decent as are

Mumford and Sons

I dont think we will ever see bands like we had again. But you have to remember. The 60's & 70's and even the very early 80's was an amazing time for music with so many different things exploding on the scene

The problem alot of bands have today. Including two of the 3 you listed. Is they basically sound just like 100 other bands out there. Not in style but in sound.
One would never mistake Pink Floyd with the Moody Blues. Or Chicago with Blood Sweat and Tears. Or Boston from Kansas. A lot of todays music Particularly with the heavier stuff. One band sounds a lot like the next

I don't think I've listened to mainstream music since I was 10 or 11,I discovered this new radio format in about 68/69 called FM!

Music is much the same today as it was back then, you have some good stuff and you have the junk they push on the radio. Living in Canada we got stuck with a Canadian content law on our radio and TV,his wasn't all bad tho because some great Canadian acts got airtime they likely wouldn't have otherwise.

Like Soulyss says there's some really good music out there you just need to find it! Peronally I like anything that's different and clever!  Portishead came out in the early 90's and they caught my attention, also Apocalyptica came along and put a new slant on some terrible music that I found interesting.

Lately I've been listening to the headstones and dropkick murphy,of course Mumford and sons is had to avoid as it's played to deth on the radio but that doesn't mean it isn't good!

But when I want to really listen to music I put on some King Crimson,Captain beyond or Floyd, when I get real serious I put on some Bo hanson and crank my castles to 11!!!!! ya my amp has 11 on it........ :devil     cause it's more than 10 isn't it???

I watch the late night shows and SNL only to see a guys who want to be seen rather than heard.

This is evidenced by drummers who have one floor tom and no rack toms at all stylishly beating the hell out of the drums with basic beats that have zero resemblence to the album track.

They want to be seen so they have no toms in front of them.

Also seen are 3 guitarists flogging away on guitars almost as well as anthony keidis in "give it away" (badly) using downstrokes only and you hear no guitar in the performance but rather the guy with the synth who is standing in the back laying down the entire groove.

They want to be seen so they can't be bothered with trying to play something listenable on the guitar.

Sure, a few new bands who can play somehow slip through but I have no clue what the A&R guys at record labels are thinking when they sign bands who can't perform live.

Then I tune to leno and find "bad company" still rocking it 40 years later.

Alabama shakes is a cool one. There are a few pretty high profile bands over the past couple years doing a similar kind of thing, flat out worshiping 60s and 70s rock (Beatles, Stones, Doors, Dylan kinda stuff) like Tame Impala (who also has a singer that happens to sound exactly like John Lennon and has the Beatles down great) and Foxygen, and Foxy Shazam doing more of an overblown 80s/Queen kind of thing
Also 80s aesthetics and synthpop is trending really hard right now

Define "today's" music. A ton of good stuff made in the last decade, admittedly along with a ton of crap. If you mean since about '08, yes there has been a much higher crap to art ratio. However, I'll be honest; I think most of the older music sucks.

And these are just some of the less mainstream stuff. So much more, its just buried underneath of crap pouring from Kanye, Beiber, Taylor Swift, et al. But if you don't like any of this, you're most likely slightly tone deaf, and more than slightly biased.

Different music for different times.

I can be blasting Motörhead one day and then fist pumping EDM music the next. I could just stare out my window and listen to Riders on the Storm or I could close the blinds and listen to Lose Yourself. I could be singing (badly) September in the shower and then humming Ride of the Rohirrim as I play video games.

I feel like people need to stop being so prideful about their "music" that they won't listen to anything else. Every category has its own uniqueness and it's not your right to judge other people based on the music they listen to. My iPod has every kinda of music ranging from the ones I used as examples to foreign music and to classicals.

The greatest and best song in the world: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2Jvgbe9Kx0U#t=54s

The original version had them imping "stairway to heaven" to fool the demon......check for the "stairway to heaven" version.

They are primarily a comedy act but they seem to have the ability to deliver the rock like few others.......especially live which is where most new acts fall terribly short.

Thier song recognizing the roadies is pretty cool and rocks.......the performance on letterman is sweet.

For something completely different...........

I really like the duet between Lajon from sevendust and "skin" from "skunk anasase".

This girl can rock like nobody's business but her own stuff is not nearly as hard as this one linked.

I'm 99.9% sure I wasn't aware of that song until I saw this version of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF_WdQNVsZM
Which made the original video look kinda lame by comparison.

As for female singer / songwriters, I still have to hand it to Gwen.  ~20 years later and she's still my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hunha8UtqCk

Disturbed are awesome. They rock.

And yes they are metal. But unlike almost all contemporary bands they don't scream and their lyrics are actually understandable.

Five Finger Death Punch and Iced Earth are the only other two that readily come to mind.

Agreed.  I am an old rocker (born in 67), but I find good alt rock and other genres all the time.

For example - Wolfmother was a pleasant surprise

Disturbed are awesome. They rock.

And yes they are metal. But unlike almost all contemporary bands they don't scream and their lyrics are actually understandable.

Five Finger Death Punch and Iced Earth are the only other two that readily come to mind.

I saw Iced Earth at The Hard Rock Cleveland a few years ago and it was great.  Unfortunately, my stomach started to hurt 3/4 through the set due to the bass (it was VERY loud and pounding) but I suffered through it.   :)

I cannot wait to me my buddy backstage at Mayhem Festival.   They were the only band personally introduced by Metallica at Orion Music Festival.   They have turned in the winning ticket and have hit the big time.

Their name?    Battlecross.
saw them live at mayhem :rock
epic :rock

Today's music is soo dumbed down (quality wise) that studio engineers also have to consider checking final mix on very cheaply made earbuds and all-in-one audio system.

You might care too much, bro.
I have listened one song of theirs, found it completely unsuitable for my taste, since that im just ignoring this kind of stuff. I just dont have the energy to hate everything i dont like, this 2 chords "metal", electro, rap, etc.

I like a lot of music types i guess. How ever nothing today really dose it for me.... For example one day ill listen to Johnny cash or Roger Miller than queen the next day then 60s-70s rock such as CCR, Jemi Hendrix, bad company. Yet nothing today seems to get to my liking for some reason. I have a deep hate for dubstep....If i wanted to hear the sounds of a computer killing itself i would plug headphones into mine and throw it in a pool.
