Scary stuff.... I'd almost want to be that guy that left, at least he's clear of the chopper and in silk.....

I know very little about parachuting, but it seems to me using the drag chute type setup in a helicopter might be a recipe for disaster just in general, wouldn't it?

Wiley,

The pilot chute deployment works quite well, hard to improve on.  The problem was his pilot chute got pulled out as he climbed out of the chopper...happens on fixed wing jumps as well. (Once watched a parachute go over tha tail of my 182!)

Usually a case of handsomehunk jumper, poor maintenance of rig, poor packing or inatttention when moving around the aircraft.

Ah, so the pilot chute being exposed was abnormal then...  Makes more sense.

Chest strap comes undone during skydive,
Automatic Activation Device working fine ;p

Saw a similar video recently only this time it was from a plane. They took almost as long to recover it. Rather tense few minutes that.  Fortunately, I have never had it happen on any of my drops. Once though after I dropped several tandems. I was descending and came across one floating at 7000 feet when normally they don't even open above 5000. I thought WTF and flew past him to have a look. The TI told me later, he'd thrown the drogue and whack his parachute opened. Glad it didn't happen anywhere near the plane. :O

One of the biggest fears of any skydive pilot is a parachute over the tail. That and some handsomehunk skydiver hitting the tail.

I had a guy on the step of the 182 rubbed reserve flap on the door (opened up against the wing) pin came out and I watched reserve deploy over the stab of my 182. Stomped right rudder and rolled hard right, canopy slid of end of stab before inflating...was quite exciting.

Most fun was a glove that blew back and jammed in the mass balance on the 206 locking the elevator at about 2/3 up.  A bit of acro before I found a balance with power to stabilize...then some more as I yanked the yoke back and forth to clear it...probably -1 to +2 or 3 Gee before it cleared.  Thought I might have to get out of that one.

Had a jumper with a bunch of Velcro on his rig dag be carpet out with him.  It wrapped over the stab causing a tremendous buffet before it worked loose and fell off. Only lasted a few seconds but seemed much longer.

I miss flying jumpers.

Hey who's been censoring my comments?  :noid No such thing as a handsomehunk skydiver. Only pilots are handsome. :aok

colmbro, some seriously fascinating moments there.  I won't miss skydive flying when I quit, let me tell you. Five years of it is enough for anyone.

Naw, biggest fear is jumpers eating chili dogs and beer the night before...about 6-8k it comes back to haunt you.  Once put a load out early because of that. :)

Hey who's been censoring my comments?

On this forum George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" translates to:  toejam, piss, diddly,  bigtoe, noodlesucker, motherdiddlyer, and tits.

I guess it's OK to say piss and tits here. :)

I remember a jump where one of the jumpers started to get sick (we were about 10 k) and lost what ever he ate from the party the night before and lucky for me I had someone sitting in front of me because she blocked the atomized spray blowing throughout the cabin lol. (He lost his dentures on that one). lol
All the jumpers on that load had to avoid the mess he made right in fromnt of the jump door

The boss did a favor for an old friend and had me take them on a flight seeing tour.  On the way we circled their house for photos and while doing so my window popped open (not unheard of to unlatch the window by accident with your arm).  I pulled it closed and noticed the guy behind me had his fingers in the window when I closed it.  After just a moment it popped open again si I turned to see WTF was going on and see this guy try to puke out the side window.  140 mph wind blast blew it right back into his face, covered his girlfriend seated behind him and flew around the cockpit onto the instrument panel.  (It appeared he had a chocolate malt mixed with beer). I was not happy.  Landed at the nearest airport so handsomehunk and his family could clean the plane (they had a choice, clean or walk) and chewed dunderheads bellybutton for opening the window and for not telling me he was ill.  Come to find out this guy gets sick every time he flies.  Left him there, continued the flight with remaining pax.

I always make sure any time I go up, no matter with who, that there are at least two bags around.

I think I still have a few bags from airlines that no longer exist somewhere in a box.

I was on a load at the WFFC and this pilot always yelled out altitude and jump run....so these 2 yahoo's start to tell the pilot how to fly his craft...rudder deflection speed blah blah blah...so the pilot says "sure". He yells out the alt and jump run to the and GO GO GO!!!!!. They jump...and he tells everyone else to GET BACK IN!!!!! Those 2 yahoo's had a 7 mile walk back to the DZ. "That's what they get for telling me how to fly my plane" he said lol
