Title: Aces High "posters"
Post by: Soulyss on July 10, 2013, 07:26:13 PM
Many moons ago when I was a undergrad in college in the fine arts department I discovered I really enjoyed traditional print art and media.  Last week I really got to missing some of the work I used to do and since print equipment is rather expensive I decided I'd try my hand at making "digital" posters.

With that in mind I downloaded a copy of GIMP and with little to no experience with it set to work, I've always kind of liked the war time propaganda posters and that style is what I was trying to emulate a bit.  Ultimately I think I'd like to find the right combination of filters to take an in game screen shots and give it a similar appearance so I can create my own source material.  Once I can fine tune it a bit they would become either fun little projects to share with the community or use for upcoming scenario/special event announcements, hey one can dream right?

For example something like this might due for a Battle of Britain scenario

Nice job! A navy ship and a sub poster would be cool too. Some of the German navy sub propaganda was neat.

Not to nit pick, but did the Germans ever take Stukas to the UK?

Too bad there are no active subs in the game.

true. I thought he was just creating ww2 propaganda type posters.

If that's the case, some graphics of gliders cruising in would be sweet.

I'm using this one as a desktop for a bit.

If there were 90% of the game population would be in them, thinking they would be the ultimate place to hide where the enemy hopefully can't find them or shoot back.

I like the look of it!

Not to nit pick, but did the Germans ever take Stukas to the UK?

They did. They initially used them to attack shipping in the channel and later used them to attack the radar stations on the coast and airfields but losses were so high against the Hurricanes and Spitfires that they were almost completely withdrawn from service in Western Europe. By spring 1941 only 30 Stukas were stationed to attack the UK.

Two pictures showing a Ju87 augering (guessing it was shot down) into a home station radar tower.

That's weird.  The two shots are from different angles, and in the 2nd shot, it looks like there is some screen or frame across the door that isn't in the shot 1.

I might be blind but in the movie clip it looks like it misses the tower and hits the building but in the photos it hits the tower

You sure this isn't the newest horde tactic to shut down an entire AF?

Pick up a copy of "The Hardest Day: The Battle of Britain: 18 August 1940" by Alfred Price, and you can read about the Stukas that attacked that day. And what befell them.   :devil

On August 13, 1940 these nine Stuka Gruppen (~30 planes each) were assigned to Luftflotte 2 and 3:

II./StG 1      Pas de Calais
IV./StG 1      Tramecourt

I./StG 1      Angers
II./StG 1      Angers

I./StG 2      St. Malo
II./StG 2      Lannion

I./StG 77      Caen
II./StG 77   Caen
III./StG 77   Caen

...

On another thread I ask the question about doing viral marketing. Then I had an idea...

Soulyss creates a few of these posters that also serve as a link. Then others create YouTube videos of great AH fights that are hosted on AH website or Facebook. Then those of us that want to post these recruiting posters in various places around the world and create some viral marketing for AH. The first video would obviously feature some Battle of Britain action. I'm happy to up a Bf-109F/E or even a Stuka to help make the video.

I hope you don't consider this hijacking the thread. I think it fits but...

boo

I think there is also some available footage/movies made of one of the Battle of Britain scenarios.  I think Kermit did one, and Vudu might have done one.  They might be on youtube.

I think it's always good if players help spread the word.  :aok

Soulyss, you still up for this?

I thought if the posters also featured actual screenshots of the game, perhaps that would be cool.

Posters could reflect a Rook, Bishop or Knight perspective.

That P-39 picture looks familiar.  Will royalties be distributed?  :D

No but replacement screenshots will be considered!  ;)

Honestly ... and fairly ... I can see adding fine print where the player responsible for the screen-shot is given credit (and that shot is used only with that player's permission - much like the AHII logo and banner would be).  :)

The second one was mine.

LOL ..... always an option though it loses a bit of WWII nostalgia to be mixed in with chess-pieces and such.  :)

This is one of my favorites.
