Are now breaking the speed of sound over residential areas.
A customer just came in to the Motorcycle store and angrily informed me of this. He WILL be making some phone calls to the base commander and a formal complaint will be lodged.
He knows this for a fact because as the plane flys over his house :airplane: he looks up and can see it, but the sound of the engine is behind it.
I sure would like to hear that phone call to the base commander :devil

:rofl
I watched F-18's fly over my hotel going to/from NAS Oceana all last week. I too was a victim of the plane flying faster than its sound! :old:

Your customer is stupid.

I gotta side with Dragon here, except maybe ignorant would be more accurate than stupid.
-
I wonder when you start noticing sound delay? under 100 yards? The sound is just taking a while to reach your customer's ears because of the distance between him and the aircraft. If they broke the sound barrier he would know it (really know it).

This is correct. If they actually broke the sound barrier everyone for blocks would know it. There would be borken windows and other glass goods. The sound gets to him after the jet goes by because of the distance from him to the jet. :lol

Dude. We seen the jet. Then we heard it. Tharfore it was flying faster than the speed of sound.

Wrong, and ignorant of reality. IF, that were the case, you would most likely have cuts and abrasions from the broken glass and other debris damage caused by the shockwave of the sonic boom. Oh, you didn't mention the sonic boom. How many of them did you hear? Additionally, we would all be hearing about it on the local and national news, similar to when one of the USAF Thunderbirds went supersonic over Tucson recently during an air show practice.

Whoa Puma. Maybe I didn't do a very good job of tipping it off, but I was joking. I experienced a bit of what the OP was referring to answering questions from my aviation interest challenged wife and 5 year old son while on vacation last week. :)
Sorry for the confusion.

No sweat, Triton. Hard to tell sometimes who is joking and who is.......well, never mind. :salute

Not only do I joke, but I joke poorly! :old:
A man goes into a bar and says, "Give me a drink before the trouble starts." And the bartender gives him one. He drinks it, and says, "Give me another drink before the trouble starts." He downs that one, and says, "Give me another drink before the trouble starts." He drinks that, and says, "Give me another drink before the trouble starts." And the bartender says, "When's this trouble going to start?" The man says, "The trouble starts as soon as you realize that I don't have any money."

Assuming speed of sound to be 750 miles/hour (and it is often slower due to atmospheric conditions), a little work with a calculator gives a speed of about 1,100 feet per second for those sound waves. So at 100 yards, you would have a little over .2 second delay.

Breaking the sound barrier over someone's head and already travelling supersonic over one's head are .... well ... two different things. When the Blue Angels flew Phantom jets, part of the show involved supersonic speed. The diamond formation was out there for the audience to see. All of a sudden a streak flew from behind us. It sure seemed like a full second before the sound caught up. A loud sound. Not break glass loud but I'm tellin' ya .... people throughout the crowd hit the deck. An F-18 did the same thing to us at the Alliance airshow. Ah how it brought back memories. I think I have the 14 yr old stepson hooked. :D

The military jet demonstration teams DO NOT INTENTIONALLY break the sound barrier during air shows. What you are experiencing is a jet traveling at or near transonic speed, but not supersonic.
