Title: Look familiar?
Post by: Widewing on July 14, 2013, 01:44:42 PM
How many times have we had to struggle with half a wing missing?

Was it hit by bombs dropped from above it?

My junk never looks that good, when I fly.

Looks like it was rammed to me, or it was hit by flak.

I don't think a bomb could shred the horizontal stab like that as well. Ram, flak, or extensive damage from a fighter to me.

Do you suppose that it is flying or is it currently crashing?

Did he make it?  Not only is 1/2 a wing missing but the horizontal stab is damaged and the vertical stab severely damaged, possibly no rudder.  How did he keep that in the air?  (And that isn't just a photo from instantly after the damage, you can see the right aileron almost full up so the pilot is trying to keep it in the air.)

I think it was collision damage; I don't see any holes from flak shrapnel and the damage is all on the port side like a fighter tried to head-on him and collided with his wing, vert stab, and left horiz stab.

That plane does not look remotely flyable to me.  I can see managing the loss of a wing tip, but not ~70% of the wing's length.

Hmm, it's not that hard to fly in game with half a wing, 1 stab and no rudder...wonder if this is "realistic".

Tough not to think about the guys in that bird who most likely died without any chance of re-upping in a new bird a second later :(

I think at the very least the crew had time to bail.  Again, see the right aileron full up- the pilot is actively maintaining some control.

I would guess that to be a shot of it right after it was hit.  It would appear that the wing came off and struck the tail of the plane.

This one however, wasn't as lucky.

:airplane: Looks like he still has control, the right aileron is in the full up position, which it should be with that much damage. With that much left wing missing, it would want to roll to the left, hence the full up right aileron. Can't tell about the rudder, which should be to the right also, but can't tell from this photo. Would like to know if he got it on the ground or did the crew bail out.

The damage shown visually is not the same as the damage the flight model is using for lost lift.

Here is another one for you.  Kanichi Kashimura on his return from a combat sortie in Shanghai after a mid-air collision. He had to circle the field several times before crash landing it on his airfield.  He walked away from the landing.  :salute
