Title: how did you pick your name tag, here is why I changed mine
Post by: madrid311 on July 15, 2013, 11:05:00 PM
Hi all. I always wonder why a name is picked as we all have our reasons. I was gunny. Now I'm GunFTR. In the last flight sim game I played for 3 years, airattack ( http://usaac.us/ ) I was  Gunfighter. I picked this name as an omage to all the Clint Eastwood movies and Stephen Hunter characters in his books. I'm a west coast native, and love gun fighting and the culture. I thought its a great name for me to apply to a ww2 fighter name. while I was drooling over ww2 aircraft photos to use as a screen saver I came across the Gunfighter p-51 mustang, I read the history and felt that the name was meant to be for me then at that point. I realize the planes name was Gunfighter but its cool.  AH2 allows only 8 characters. I also noticed that you have a squad called the gunfighters. great name by the way! so I hesitated a bit as I was new here and didn't want to ruffle feathers if I could help it. Back in Airattack my squad m8s called me gunny on the coms so I thought I would go with that here. well.... I received a few  "are you a marine"? etc. and As I'm a civilian pretending to be a fighter pilot and I did stay at a holiday inn express a few times it didn't qualify me to take that name I felt It was time to go back to a name I always wanted anyway without the 9 characters of course. I gave up all my achievements and am starting over but I wanted to do a better job in the game and feel I had 5 months to feel my way around. I will say this, most everyone in here is pretty good, and the good ones are sic. So now I go forth as GunFTR and hope to see you in the air and continue my pursuit of hes pretty good to.....well lets just get to that point first, right?  Ok your turn.  Peace.

{The Gunfighters} are an awesome crew!
Flew with them since I was 14.

My first tag was skullrat, I was really into rock so I thought I was a total badass, bu the name was boring to me.

Now I know alot o peeps want to know why I have the game name Zacherof
Surfinn listen up! :D

Back in high school my group of freinds all listened to metal.
Death, and black metal were our favorite.

One day, I decided to walk to pals house wearing black and white corpse paint(basically what kiss wore, but way more benign and awesome) and a wig.

Alot of muscians in black metal have stage names. Examples are shagrath, abbath, demonaz, nergul, varg(you should know who that is Gscholz) so one of my buds dubbed me Zacherof(cause my first name is Zach)

I was forever dubbed as Zacherof from then on.

For a while I spelled it Zach3rof for some dumb reason befor I finalized on zacherof circa 4 years ago.

And no I won't change the Z to a J, or W :rofl

Another reason I like the name is people remember it along with my down to fight attitude

There was a Rolling Rock bottle sitting on the table next to me. I looked at it and thought "Eh, why not?"

That is the entire story! I actually have never had Rolling Rock before (I was 15 when I chose this name, it was my dads beer, not mine). There is no significant meaning behind it. About the only thing you can link the name to me is I am from Pennsylvania.  :D

When I started playing AH I picked SAJ73, yes it is my initials and year of birth.

But after flying with it for a few years I took a break from the game, and my account got deleted. When I finally came back I had to start a new account. Over the time as SAJ73 I got used to being called just SA for short, and I figured it would be smart to have a name that I could recognize in the heat of battle, but not SAJ73 because people always asked questions about what it meant and so on.... Instead of making an essay about it I'll tell the short version, Essay=SA and Essay73 was born.   :D

Hey, I'm with ya on the Canon/ Nikon sentiments. If I ever again buy another high-end camera, it'll either be a Nikon or a Leica. And I have always loved the Mamiya medium format cameras. My youngest brother is a professional photographer, and he swears by Nikons. I own an all-black Nikon FE (circa 1981) that I love to use still today.

nooby52: when I came back to AH this last time, I had been away for so long that's what I felt like in here: a "nooby". "52" is my birth year;

south52: In years past in Air Warrior and in AH I had flown as "slimm", "slimm50", and "slim52". This last incarnation I decided on "south52" because I have always lived in the south (Alabama and now Texas). Plus...I'm not as "slim" as I used to be.

I inherited mine from my daughters friend when he went in the Army in 2006 and I don't even know what R-105 means. It has something to do with heavy metal music I know nothing about. They had Aces High on my computer so I kept it. I have almost 20.000 perk points under R-105 so I ain't changing my name. I never played a video game in my like but this game is the most fun I ever had while never having to leave the house.

Growing up in Las Vegas I was frequently the only white kid playing basketball at Lorenzi Park. I was pretty good at basketball and would surprise many with my abilities. I started out being called all manner of race-baiting terms in reference to being the only Caucasian for blocks around, certainly on the court. Ultimately the fact that I surprised so many....one day I took a much taller black guy to the hole, everyone laughed as I 'skooled him' and one of my buddies yelled at the top of his lungs "BOO!" From that moment on I was called "boo."

When I started Air Warrior back around 94 or 95 (in the AOL days), my Army callsign was Hammer 9. That was Hamr9 for a short time, then +HMR+. Became either oHAMMERo or xHAMMERx (can't remember, but was with x on the BBS) when I migrated to Aces High. Checked one day with Skuzzy and plain ol' Hammer was available, been that ever since.

I've changed my name a few times over the year, even had a forced change way back when someone seemed to think I was using an inappropriate name, that cost me a couple thousand perks in each category.

So I was looking for a fitting name to "keep" and I was going to use "morphined" but it was 1 too many letters so as I was looking for a cool a   vatar I saw morfiend,Hmm I thought,a fiend and morphine all rolled up into 1 so I took that and have kept it since 05/06.

Yes I've been on morphine for a long time because of a medical condition.

But hey atleast my wings didn't melt getting to close to the sun!!! a long time ago!!! :devil                   :rofl :rofl :rofl

PS: Ded it still amazes me that you can remember all this stuff that happened so long ago!

Yepp, with Google and a bunch of online dictionaries. A single source can't be trusted...

I used to be a salesman for office equipment. Needed a nick for a net auction service and have been using it ever since. On many occasions someone else has had the same brilliant idea, so in many places I can be identified with my year of birth (62) added to the callsign.

"Uptown" just sounds like a fighter pilots call sign to me. It has a cocky and arrogant ring to it which goes with the personalities of fighter pilots that I've met over the years. I recently changed my ingame name to OldNo7 as it's more fitting to me personally as in reality I'm just a backwoods southern redneck who likes to drink whiskey in the shade. No attitude, no ego and no funks given.

First flight sim I played, 'Wily' was taken, so had to go with a variant.  When I came over here I'd had it with this spelling for so long, I just kept it this way.

It's more or less because I aspire to beat people by mentally being enough moves ahead of them in the fight to beat them by guile, unfortunately what happens in reality often enough is I wind up at the bottom of a coyote-shaped hole in the ground.  I can't take myself too seriously in this game and always liked looney tunes.

I also wanted a handle that was easy to say and understand over vox. Ever try to give a warning to someone with a long name or a #s guy?  :headscratch:

Only problem I run into is getting confused with Slade as the names are quite similar.

IcePac was chosen in the late early 1990s as the login on my computer and eventually showed up online after I retired "quisp".

It came from a party where MTV was on the TV and somoene made fun of the fact that MTV became the "Tupac Channel" and someone else said "actually, it's the Ice Cube channel" and I added that I would switch my rap name from "snoopmarkymark MC Johnson" to "icepac" because it was obvious that name meant more than content.

I fly another sim as "higgns" commenting in character and have flown as "shwing" as well.

I've been an avid rock climber for over 20 years and a professional guide for about 17 of those years.  Seemed like an easy callsign.  I was told that I needed to change it to "chunks" after hurling in the back of a friends RV8 and leaving my personal mark on the interior.  For what it's worth I managed to get chunks on both the pilots rudder pedals and the elevators!  That was a record for me!

When I started playing Air Warrior back in the late 1980s you had to create your own in-plane color artwork (in my case, for an Amiga 1000 PC).  Prior to learning the plane set, and thus in complete ignorance, I decided that the P51 was the plane for me.  So, I bought a Squadron/Signal paperback on the P51 with color illustrations.  I liked the color scheme on Major "Deacon" Hively's P51b, so I decided to use "The Deacon".  This carried over to AH as "TDeacon".  So there...

"Iko Iko" is a much-covered New Orleans song that tells of a parade collision between two "tribes" of Mardi Gras Indians and the traditional confrontation. The song, under the original title "Jock-A-Mo," was written in 1953 by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford in New Orleans. The story tells of a "spy boy" (i.e. a lookout for one band of Indians) encountering the "flag boy" or guidon carrier for another "tribe." He threatens to "set the flag on fire."

Crawford set phrases chanted by Mardi Gras Indians to music for the song. Crawford himself states that he has no idea what the words mean, and that he originally sang the phrase "Chock-a-mo," but the title was misheard by Chess Records and Checker Records president Leonard Chess, who misspelled it as "Jock-a-mo" for the record's release.

"Jock-a-mo" was the original version of the song "Iko Iko" recorded by The Dixie Cups in 1965. Their version came about by accident. They were in a New York City studio for a recording session when they began an impromptu version of "Iko Iko," accompanied only by drumsticks on studio ashtrays.

Simple enough answer.  80th FS Ace "Corky" Smith bringing in his P38G single engine.

Considering how many times I do that if I get the 38 back at all, "CorkyJr' seemed appropriate.

Wanted something that was easy to remember and not overly common (although I have seen a few versions come and go from other players) and I didn't want a # callsign like "sixgun36" or something like that. Nothing more than that really.

PS it help to get a vox chk 6 call if your friends can pronounce your in-game id easily. It beats trying to say "Hey Clefanger guy? there is a Fw 190 coming down on" you to a player who's id is Clwfng56 and you are not sure hot to pronounce the darn thing. Pick something we can say fast over vox and we aren't left with a ??? feeling.  ;)

When I first started flying online in Air Warrior in 1988, it asked for a handle.  I didn't have anything in mind to use, and it seemed to me presumptuous to pick my own handle (lest I pick something above my station).  Who knew where I'd end up?  I was, after all, starting out as a lowly noob.  So I just entered my first name.  As I then became known by that handle, I didn't want to change it thereafter.  So, I'm still "Brooke."

In the USAF, other guys pick your handle for you, so you don't always end up being called things like "Mr. Awesome" or "Combat King" and instead can get a handle like "Lumpy" or "Wobbles".

You know, "Lumpy" or "Wobbles" could work well for WWII RAF pilots.

"Hello, Squadron Leader.  How was it?"

"What ho, Squippy.  Wobbles pranged his kite right in the 'how's your father.'  Lumpy dicky birded, fell back on his sammy, took a waspy, flipped over on his Betty Harpers, and caught his can in the Berty!"

another F4 nickname "Rhino" but had to shorten it to +Rino when I joined the Nomads.  Went back

It seems I'm late to the party as usual...  :noid

My forum name is Dragon Tamer because that was the nickname given to me in high school (I used to draw some pretty bad bellybutton dragons).

DragonTamer didn't fit in the handle in game so rather than butcher it up into something that no one could read I went searching for a different name. I went with Player1 because in every other video game I had ever played I was always Player 1. You couldn't rename yourself to something else. I still use the name Player 1 for video games (whenever possible) and I still use the name Dragon Tamer for forums (whenever possible).

One thing I've noticed is that when it comes to people that like the name it's usually a 50/50 split. The guys who are a bit older tend to like it a bit more. The guys who grew up in the heyday of video games tend to think it's a pretty good throwback name. The younger kids tend be brats and say that it's a stupid name and lacks creativity... like naming yourself Rambo in every single FPS you play is creative...   :rofl

I actually had a squaddie address me as Dragon Tamer in game the other day and I responded instantly... I haven't had someone speak the name Dragon Tamer to me in 3 years.

If anyone has a problem with my name they can kiss my dragon!

Of course every one kept asking about free medical advice.... well until they tried what I suggested  :devil I hung on to the name when I started here as there was a Maddog already grrrrrr. The whole time I was in the 444th Air Mafia and ran the squad for a number of years. We had a motto, "There is only one way out of the Mafia...." My parents met in 1943 at Lockheed Burbank, on the P38 assembly line. Mom worked on the gun cabinet & Dad worked on the nose gear. She would drop things, on or near him, so that he would have to hand them back up to her. She was flirting with him. By today's teminology I guess my mother was a "cougar".

As a kid growing up, I told my parents I wanted to fly a P38. Sadly they informed me that they didn't make them anymore.

Thanks to HTC I finally get to.

And so, since I only fly P38 Lightnings and my last name is Ryder, I came up with LtngRydr.
My noseart is Betty Page in a devil costume riding a lightning bolt

As for my BBS name that comes from a long time ago, about 50 years.
I was told that God does not make mistakes.
Therefore, I must be one of his experimental models that didn't make it into general production.
So I must be a 'lab rat'. the numbers are my birthday.    :old:

A long time ago, there was a game called Wing Commander.  You had to make up both a name and a call sign for your pilot.  I liked the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (saw the cartoon version).  So I gave my pilot the name Rick Tavi, and the call sign Mongoose.

So years later, I used the same call sign for my WWII pilot.  When I was flying Warbirds, the call sign could only be six characters (at least, back then, I don't know about now), so I spelled it "mngoos".  Not everyone figured it out.  "Mongoose" fits just right here at Aces High.

Shane: A gun is a tool, Bob/Marian; no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.

Shane: You know,  I like a man who watches things go on around. It means he'll make his mark someday.

Shane: Joey, there's no living with... with a killing. There's no going back from one. Right or wrong, it's a brand. A brand sticks.

Shane: A man has to be what he is, Joey. Can't break the mould. I tried it and it didn't work for me.

Joey: Shane! Come back!

I chose Zoney because it is a nickname given to people from Arizona visiting San Diego which is our popular vacation spot.

I played with that name for 20 years.

Then, I wanted a change and wanted to make a commitment to JG11 and Luftwaffe pilots.  I wanted to also make the commitment to Luftwaffe aircraft exclusively.  So I chose Hartmann, the greatest ace the world has ever seen with over 350 kills, and a survivor of WWII.  Frankly I was shocked when I typed in "Hartmann" checking for available names and it was there.  Grabbed it, shoved it inside my jacket and ran from the store.

Long ago, on the largest moon of the planet Neptune, there was a meeting of the supreme Triton council.  Weeks of deliberation concluded that all Triton's should be differentiated numerically.  A game of Twister was commenced to decide who would have the lowest number.  Triton1 was the victor.  I came in a dismal 28th.   :cry

I was Umbra8 when I first started flying AH, inspired by a book I had read recently

But after my first week or so, being on ventrilo with squaddies etc, it just seemed weird being called 'Umbra' and not what I have used in every other computer game and what has been my real life nickname for years and years

so...coombzy    (my last name is Coombes irl)

I recall when signing up for AH trying half a dozen names which were all taken. Greebo was the first name I tried that wasn't taken and is a character in Terry Pratchett's comic fantasy Discworld novels, something I was in to at the time. He is a fierce, one-eyed, evil-tempered house cat that even the local wolves are afraid of. I guess its become more apt since I settled on the Hellcat as my ride of choice.

I went to the RedBull air races once with my wife and a friend.  Our section had an endless supply of free RedBull.  At one point, my friend is fidgeting around and says, "I feel sort of clammy and twitchy."  "How many of those did you have?" asks my wife.  "About seven," says my friend.

1st time I made an account in 2000 was 2 days after booting up the 1st PC I ever owned. When the game asked for a CS this was news to me. I looked over at the toolbox still sitting on the floor from installing a new phone line (and still on 56K today).
I remembered when I was just starting out as an electricians helper 10 years earlier. I was told we had to cut some 4" ridged for sleeves in foundation walls.
The electrician I was working under said he would be right back. He did not tell my where or why he was going. When he returned with an electric bandsaw and cords, I had already cut 2 with my hacksaw. He started calling me by that. Had trouble lifting 12 OZ that night though.
Guess what was laying on top of my tool box day 1 of my AH addiction.

I grew up in the 82ND Airborne Division and am a Master Parachutist. Back in the day we used to joke that if you had a malfunction, you were nothing more than a dirt dart. That and the fact that the Air Force seemed to like trees more than sand, falling out of an airplane under a t-10, you are not steering, a dirt dart.

Titanic happened to be it. Obviously, someone has already used it, tried Titanic1, didn't work. Tried Titanic2, didn't work. Titanic3? ding ding ding. Then it just stuck and I've been using Titanic3 for pretty much every game I play.

Started as Hoplite in 2008, primarily because I have been studing ancient warfare since I fell in love with the subject while researching a report for 8th grade social studies.

Around 2010 I started flying in the DA almost excusively...my job's work/life balance was kinda slanted towards work/no life. I decided the quick and mindless fight atmosphere of the DA better suited me as my free time was limited.  During my DA days, I started to get tired of Hoplite because most people either called me "Hoppy" on vox or would mispronounce it as "Hope-light".   Didn't mind Hoppy so much, but I always envisioned some kid on a pogo-stick whenever it came up.   :D

I changed jobs in 2011 and found I had more free time to devote to Aces High.  As such I decided to return to the MAs and felt a change was needed....so I went with Fulcrum as I have always loved the look of the MIG-29.  I changed my name to AKFulcrm when I joined the Arabian Knights.

I recently changed my name to AKBandit as part of a squadron inside joke....my squadron forum avatar is the picture of Burt Renyolds from "Smokey and the Bandit" below:

Being a huge drum corps fan

My wife would give you a big <S>!  She's an ex-band person who is a fan of drum and bugle.  When we watch college football, she gets mad when they cut away from the band for more talking heads.  :)

How does one change their name in game?

Hmmm.  Well, being highly original I chose my first CPID based on my initials - MWL.  Of course no one in the squad I eventually joined could pronounce a 'word' with no vowels.  Eventually the Squad Leader, K gave up and said, "I'm just gonna call you Mole."  As I was fairly new at the time, it sounded right - as I couldn't see or shoot straight (and still can't BTW!).  I have kept it since.

Regards,

Yup....I thought you knew I was once Hoplite.  A great tag....even if the majority of players would say something like:

"um....check 6...uh....Hope-lite, is it??"

   :frown:

I do indeed remember Adog, BrkArow, Spacy and Wilbur....as well as Zero7, Rowdy1, TA57x and Tachyon.  Most of 'em are still in the DA to this day....how they avoid getting bored with the mindlessness of the fights is beyond me.  That being said, I still go to the DA to practice ideas I have or new planes.

I was in the DA last night flying low in the middle of Furball Lake practicing many on 1 avoidance.   I always find it amusing to film and watch the usual assortment of DAers miss me in their Spit16s, LA7s and (now) Yak3s while flying in a P39 on the edge of a stall.   :joystick:  :rofl

Oh yes.  They haven't figured out how to slow down in there.

Arrow left when we all did....he's been with the Pigs forever and I haven't seen Wilbur but I catch a glimpse of the others every now and then.

Oh...some have but most (sadly) have not.  Tachyon, for example, gave up flying Tempests all the time.....he now flies Ar234s over from the bomber ranges to furball lake and gets kills with the tailgun.

*shrug* To each their own, I guess...

Mine was homage to the A6, but works another way because I like to BnZ furballs and pick low S/A pilots.  It's only 6 characters because I played Fighter Pilot (how many of you remember that Hitech game?) then Warbirds.

I am enjoying all these explanations! Now it's great when I see a fellow pilot I have an idea of what your story is. Let's see........warhorse, flybaby and pinky were former names I have used in the past in airattack.  warhorse and flybaby were names of attack gliders in a Schofield novel. And pinky was the name of my favorite penguin I trained in the movie, poppers penguins. Peace

How did I get this handle? I use to be some kind of Firefighter/paramedic named pilot, but after a little while of flying with 4th FG Debden Boys, Knife and Magoo decided that I had the personality of Eeyore. My friend who use to fly under the name Styrene, agreed with them. Like any decent name, mine was given to me.  :airplane:
