I know that theres already a thread about how much gameplay have changed but honestly, nobody has paid attention to some of the good opinions, and have diverted to those that have stupid high post counts. I put my 2 cents in and got not a single reply. I figured it'd be a good idea to flush it out here so it can at least be seen along with a few others.
The gameplay has changed dramatically according to those in the other thread and it turns out that it isn't for the better. Its gone down to three things; picking, running and lastly HOing. All of which have started to show in increasing regularity. If this continues eventually all of the guys and stick around for a fight will leave and those that just HO, run and pick are going to dominate the game.
From what iv'e read the map size and time it takes for a war to be "won" is too large to have given our current player base. With only 250-500 people online at best the maps are far too large and the bases required for capture are just too many - this goes hand in hand with the map size issue.
Now if base numbers were reduced, map size limited to 15x15 grids and base captures re-evaluated and adjusted as needed then the game would definitely see a difference in gameplay. Players would have to ditch the horde deal and work out real tactics due to defenders having a better setup.
Smaller maps means closer knit bases and faster response times. Having closer knit bases also means that attackers can come in from multiple angles and get the jump on one base, but could run into opposition as well. This package itself creates a more dynamic way to battle and doesn't allow for picking and running, HOing is still the issue though.
When bases get pushed closer together, gaining alt before finding enemies is much harder to do. It forces you to fight it at the butter zone of 5k down to the deck, resulting in more turn fights and more fun for those that enjoy a challenging engagement. Running away isn't an option when you get locked in a furball and if you don't have E to spare then you're good as dead.
Thats a decent wall of text but if you read through it all then congratz. You win an internet pie.
TL;DR - Read the damn thing to find out.
Also one more thing that I want to briefly touch on, when planes come out it seems like they take months on end to complete. This long wait makes the anticipation drag on and the mindset not care for the next thing as it seems like the current promise wont be fulfilled. If the content time could be sped up by a few weeks or even days, thatd be great.

More than two paragraphs means it will not be read :old:
The only people who complain are the ones who have made a mess in their own beds, and have tried to blame it on others :)
People like to complain about everything, it costs nothing :)
Yak3 is awesome, 410 is so poo its awesome as well :)

Sooo...if i understand your post correctly, you would like to see smaller maps?
-
I honestly don't see where the game has declined as far as game play. I mean we've always had pickers, runners, hoers, gangbangs, hoards, dweebs, tards etc. etc. Do I get tired of the maps?.....yeah sometimes but to tell the truth, I hardly ever notice the terrain once i'm in the air looking for the bad guys.
The things I do miss that I wish we had back are the trains, the factories when they were spread out and you could spawn GVs to them and blow the hell out of stuff, and the sheep. Why I miss the sheep...i have no idea :uhoh

Do you even have an valid ah account?
If not, how can you be commenting on current game play?

I agree with Uptown, you two would complain if you won the lottery :old:

Don't forget folks, picking, hoing, and such are VALID TACTICS and all may be the best way that things can be handled depending on the tactical situation as well as the plane match up. If I am above a Spit 16 which can out accelerate, out turn, and out climb me you bet your shiny vertical stabilizer I am going to "pick" him. If I am under four guys and they all come in, you can bet I'll take any shot that they give me, including a ho. Oh, and you can bet that when I think I am screwed I am going to drop that nose, wep up, and use the P51Ds speed to try to extend. Heck I may be leaving because dinner's done, I am out of beans and bullets, or I need to go take a leak in the latrine.
-
Getting shot down in a head-on attack or by a bounce over and over can be frustrating, I reckon. As can being denied your kill. I think it's something we all learn to handle, eventually, though. :salute :)

Yep it has always been this way and like I have said numerous times before the way of the fighter jock seems to be over it now seems to be cool to gang ho run in such a way that its become even more unsporting especially against bish. Last night I was on and noticed 3 cons above me I figured meh ill fight them why not? right? anyway we start tangling and I think to myself well its a couple of mins in and im not dead yet so succesfull sortie then I notice about 5 more bish high heading my way bear in mind im already fighting 3 guys on the deck alone, needless to say the other 5 jump in the fight too so now its me vs 8 of them this got me a bit angry because there was no need for the other 5 to join In I knew I was gna die vs the 3 yaks I was fighting so why even join in, if it was me seeing that I would have just flown on by and looked for an enemy who was more dangerous than the one who was on the deck already fighting 3 guys.
Another example of awesome dweebery is the boys who fly these fast birds get reversed then run, then as soon as you engage someone else they come back in for the pick I can understand the comments like "oh well you was in a spit im not going to turn fight you" but if you cant kill me yourself don't run and come back when im engaged with someone else that's just damn right lame, or when guys run to there ack then when I turn off them because I don't want to fly into there ackk don't friggin turn back around to fight me just because I have turned away from your ack.
Theres a lot of guys who fly this game who think they are top dogs but they are just gamey noobs who don't really have the balls to fight fairly. And the ones who cant see the problems are usually the same tards who are doing this stuff ingame. I am by no means a great pilot im just looking for a bit of fun usually I couldn't care about this sort of stuff but since I have returned its all I see.
go ahead flame me its just my opinion and I am entitled to it. :salute

it's the clowns in perk planes that think they have accomplished something when they dive down from a 5000ft alt advantage to pick someone flying a 30 eny plane in a fight with 2 or 3 of their buddies. the real winners are the spixteen dweebs and the jet turds that do the picking and pat themselves on the back for being great.
-
262 picks..I don't mind..I mean what else are they going to do? I'll up a 262 every once in a while for a change of pace and just have a blast zooming through furballs or the long awaited NOE lanc missions.

Hi all...yeah, been a while. Thinking on a computer build that might allow me to get back in the game; done that before though.
Started reading the board again to see how the game was going and if it was worth a build that will run a significant amount of money. Still have all the controls sitting in a dusty box though.
Anyway...from what I've been reading here...... Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I offer you this ancient commentary on the game, merely as perspective, not to start arguments.
Read the story Dux posted August 3, 2001 and see how many of the things that people don't like today were present back in 2001. Even before that, really. This is just the earliest one I could quickly find. It's a good story of a fight by Dux but note his comments on gameplay at the beginning and the comment of the opponent at the end. This one pretty much has it all. The comments by others in the thread might be enlightening as well; good pilots leaving the game, etc.
Heard any of this before? I think maybe so. There are probably similar ones even earlier. Point is, the things complained about now, today, are not new. We heard this stuff when the game was very, very young.
Yet the game goes on.
Perspective. Even an old codger such as myself continues to hear the siren call of online cartoon air combat about two decades after I first got whacked in SVGA Air Warrior (1993).
The game goes on. Enjoy it.

Last night I'm flying around in a Spitfire looking for some fun. I spot a con upping out of 24, its a 109. Oh boy, historic matchup. I let him take off (coulda vulched, ack was down). He leaves the airfield vicinity, coming toward me, and dives into a cavern, I dive after him. Our noses pass (no HO), I reverse up into a loop and start pursuit. He's slowly pulling away, but I chase. He starts grabbing alt... no way I can climb with him, so I keep my speed and stay low. He extends until he's about 4.0k away and starts heading back to me. I position myself until he's diving in from my 8 o'clock, I break left into his dive and evade him, he zooms back up to his perch. I stay in the canyons because I know he'll have to get low and slow to get me there. He BnZ's on me, I evade... this goes on for a good ten mnutes.
At this point I'm thinking... this is great, this is why I play this game. A well-matched set of planes, a well-matched couple of pilots, some great terrain to fly in (I love Mindanao), a historic opponent (109 vs Spit) and not the usual N1Ks or LA7s that I see EVERYWHERE, no heroes swooping in stealing kills while the others are busy. A dogfight that was based on tactics and strategy, not uber UFO gamey dweeb or gangbang tactics. This fight was the most satisfying that I've had in a long time.
I look at my fuel gauge... rats! 1/8 left, time to rtb. So as the 109 is in the middle of one of his extensions, I reluctantly break off and head for home. I'm smiling... I type into the radio "<S!> 109 @ 24. great fight. I'm bingo. RTB."
Silence.
Oh well, I'm heading for home, about halfway there. The whole time I'm keeping an eye on the 109, and see that he's now chasing me again, slowly catching up. I am verrrry low on fuel so I get as near to home as I can before he dives in on me. I dive into a canyon and break into his dive, and for the next 3 minutes we're having the same great fight again, but this time it's getting tighter, getting closer, my undersides scraping the canyon walls. Finally I get him at the top of a loop... I'm under him, just about stalling... I get a good burst into his tail and see his elevators come off. As I'm hanging on my prop, my engine sputters to a stop, and as I flop over to begin my glide in, I see his chute pop open. I'm just beaming at this point. What fun that was!
In white text in the buffer, private message comes in...
"Stupid Spitfires ruin this stupid game..."
"I can't fight in the canyons against a Spit that can turn on a stupid dime at 1 mph..."
As my Spit brakes precariously to a halt in one of the canyon valleys, I give the guy another chance, and send him a great big sloppy <S!> over the open channel. This time I know his name.
back at me on private channel..
"blah blah stupid blah blah..."
I send him my own private message.
"So I guess I'm just gonna have to take that as a Salute then, huh?"
Silence.
I logged off in disgust.
Since when is it all about winning? Is it score-whoring, stats, perks, ranks, etc., that brings this attitude out of people? Is it some kind of "my plane has a top speed 2.375 kts faster than his, therefore I should win all the time" stat-quoting, bean-counting mentality? Just what the hell is it that people expect from this game?
Or is it me? Am I just getting burnt out?
-
Don't mistake me for running :old:
I'm simply try to bait you to fight my fight, low alt sciccors or an overshoot :t
-
Aww the overshoot... I'm learning it's a double edged sword.... :bhead
There are times when it works perfectly and the bad guy pops in front of my sights... Then there are times when I'm waiting for him to appear only to see the tower.... :old:
... I'll admit that I've used profanity a little louder than my cat appreciates, but who hasn't in this game!? It's part of the game, the uber-highs of making that crazy move to get the kill as well as the low's of getting blasted by the same pilot/tanker 3-4 times before getting your SA figured out...
I'll HO you, I'll Vultch you, Heck.. I'll even bait you into getting to close to my B-17's with 999000.... :devil The only thing I actually feel stupid about is collisions.... It's one thing to "Head On" someone, it's another entirely to make contact in performing a Head On..... I want to shoot someone out of their aircraft, not pile into them....
... That goes for that dirty storch awhile back trying to ram my C-47!!!!! :noid

I just don't see any real difference over the 4 years I've been playing, except for the rise of GV-ing. :salute

10 years ago if you had asked this question, you would have gotten the same answers. If you had asked this question in WB 15 years ago, you would have gotten the same answers. If you had asked this question 20 years ago in AW, you would have gotten the same answers. I'm sure those were also common complaints in FA. We tend to look back at the years with rose tinted glasses.

Toad! LTNS
~S~ sir
-
Hiya Dace.. Yep, long time.
Good to see some I still recognize. <S>
-
Flown "Quitch" yet Toad? :)
-
To be truthful Guppy...I don't remember. Memory is the second thing to go, eh?
I still really appreciate that it is in here.
He's still alive; 93 in December. His memory is fading pretty severely now but there are flashes. I am just happy he still knows who I am and we can still talk. I do remember showing it to him on his computer but of course the game wouldn't run on that one.
He still has that BEAUTIFUL model of Quitch that Nuke made for him and it's in good shape. I think I posted pics in here some time ago but they are just blue question marks now.
Good to see another of the old guys too. Thanks for asking!

I don't even fire the game up much anymore really. . .
I tried flying planes that were harder to fly, that just got boring. . .Dweebs just run from your EW planes. . .
Tried score turding, that was no fun because Bruv , or 1skott (shade whoever he may be) wasn't doing it. . .I was competing with Squid, Limbo, and Zombee. . .Once I did bomber score I pretty much set myself for #1 the rest of the tour unless Bruv takes it. . .
I even tried mission leading, and it was stupid. Hordes are lame.
Dueling Arena = Boring
Mid War = Boring
Early War = Extinct
The game has declined due to the fact everyone is scared to lose their silly little cartoon life.
