Title: multi core overclocking
Post by: terrydew on July 24, 2013, 10:54:21 AM
From reading older posts on bbs I understand that AH will only use 2 cores of a 4 or 6 core cpu and that a 3 ghz 2 core would be much better than a 2.4 ghz 6 core. Assuming this is true (please correct if not), and I can over clock the cores independently in a 4 core cpu. For example set 2 cores to 48 and 2 cores to 40. Will AH and or the operating system (win 7 64 bit) use the fastest cores automatically or if not is there a setting to do it?

Should I have posted this in Tech Support?

The game has no control over what cores are going to be used.  They can even change while the game is running.

Yes, the faster the core(s)/CPU, the better the game will run.

Thanks you the reply. Is there a way to tell windows 7 to use fastest cores. Reason I ask is I have seen mention of this in FSX forums?

Thanks again.

what do you mean by fastest core? unless you have a dual cpu system with different models on each cpu slot (very uncommon) all cores are born equal in your PC  :old:

on my system with 4 cores there is a setting that allows each core to be set independently i.e. you can over clock one core to 48 and leave the other three at 40?

No, you cannot assign any core to do anything in Windows.

I OC my cpu.
I find it strange that you can OC a specific core. In order to OC a cpu in bios, you OC the entire cpu. In my case I have disabled hyper threading and OC'ed my stock 2.67GHz i7 920, to 4GHz. You are changing the cpu voltage and its multiplier as well as how it works with the ram and the qpi.
The internet is ripe with how to accomplish this.

I also use this THG Task Assignment Manager V1.0 to restrict AH to core 3 and 4. Since windows itself uses core 0 and changes from there I am using the cores that the OS will use least, as per net info. Game runs well, except for when I use the RealTek HD audio drivers, but that's another issue. Please note that there is not a noticeable difference in AH performance, IMO.

Be real careful here, you can destroy your hardware real quick! I OC'ed the cpu from the get go of this build. Been working for several years now but I do not leave pc on 24/7. It will not pass the harshest Intel burn tests but the lesser ones pass. My system is only air cooled and AH pushes temps to mid 60'sC.
AH runs nice with it.

MADe

I have a Sabertooth z77 Asus motherboard with a liquid cooled I7 3770K.

This bios has a option to change the multiplier for each core individually. The voltage setting is just for the cpu and all cores.

terry what would be the advantage of oc only a couple of cores?  or what do you expect to get out of it?

Overclocking only 1 core is often used for overclocking records in order to keep the thermal load of the cpu as low as possible. It has no practical uses as far as I know of.

The reason I asked is that I read that AH only uses a max of two cores. As mrripley said. just over clocking two cores should produce less heat and therefore sustain a higher multiplayer.

What I understand now is it will not help in AH so not worth doing.

That is not exactly accurate.  Aces High natively uses two cores.  DirectX, on the other hand, uses more than two cores.  Sound and input, alone, can use another two cores.

multiplier not multiplayer :)

Thanks Skuzzy. That explains why the temps on all four cores were increasing when AH running.I am now running at 4.5 ghz but I still get occasional  stutters when lots of cons. Temps are holding in mid 60s

Modern tech just keeps getting better. I just an EX58. Shame the software is so far behind. Gonna have to build a new machine next summer I guess. Prolly be at 2000 core cpu's and 1mil MHz ram. he he

Did some cursory testing.  Keep in mind, there are many, many variables involved in this.  When Aces High is running, there is about 40 threads running, which can be attributed to the game.

if you are worried about temp then perhaps get another cooler.   mine are in the high 40's when playing the game using an air cooler.  on the other hand I can make bacon on one video card while frying eggs on the other.
