I'm still learning and would like some view points from other pilots what ride they chose when they started aces high(only AH please). what is your choice now that you're are seasoned? I started with the 109 and quickly realized I was in over my head. Now I don't know how to proceed after 5 months of flying most the fighters in AH. :headscratch: I really don't have my go to ride. I die in all of them, :salute lol. The P47M and F4U 1-A are comfortable to me. I like the brew 239 for turning and the spit 16 has been suggested for me and I have been upping it a bit lately. Lots of posts about the spit being easy to fly etc. The best advise i have read is to pick one and Master it. I welcome your response as well as rib poking. Peace
-
I was the same as you were, I had many rides that I flew from time to time. The first plane i tried to master was the Yak9U. I squadmate of mine at the time had suggested turning my tracers off and flying around in the Yak so I would learn to conserve ammo and be able to make more precise shots. I think it worked.
For a while now I have been flying the P-38 around, but that never stops me from upping a Yak once in a while to get the feeling of nostalgia from when I first started flying.

F4U-1 .... followed by the -1a when it was modeled.
VF-17, the reason why. ;)

F4U-1 .... followed by the -1a when it was modeled.
VF-17, the reason why. ;)
I was brought up via VMF-214. Everyone flew hogs.
I consider myself a seasoned noob, cause even tho I've been flying for 6-7 years, I didn't care about gettig good at fighting till a year ago.
Go to rides are, 109s, 190's, jugs, and the ki84.
Why? The just appeal to me, and have the attributes I like o use in a fight
-
Started in the F4U1A/1C for my first 6 months - 1 year, after that flew the 109K4, have since.
K4 can turn, climb, dive, great gun, roll rate... Good all around plane, but not too easy like a spixteen or something..
-
Started with just about everything in the hanger, but mainly the P51 because of the history and the Spit XVI because i needed training wheels to learn ACM. That quickly transferred over to the F6F and F4U's, as I like the turn fights and they're flap and rudder monsters. I like to spend most of my time in the F4U-1A now. I don't play as often as i use to so i have a rust build up.
-
P38 then P47 then P38 then P47 then P38.
The P38 is my home bird. Find a plane you can feel attached too.
-
My first ride, and mainstay for the first months was the LA-7.
I did chose it for the history and the fascination I had for it all of my...
Rubbish.
I chose it for performance. It's that simple. I looked at the numbers, took a few fighters into the air offline and quickly settled to the LaLa. As a newbie, I though I'd better use all help I could get. And the La-7 was suited to my fast E based fighting style as well.
Following the LALA I had a short flirt with the Spit 8, followed by the Ki-84 and finally the Tempest. After that, I never had a dedicated "main ride" anymore. I was using a pool of fighters, with the most prominent ones 109 (all marks but E and G6), Ta 152H, Me 262. But really I was hopping in most fighters every now and then, with the great exceptions being P-38, P-39 and P-40 and the Yaks.
Today, my mainstays are B-29, G4M and B-26 :old:
-
I started with a 51D and learned its strengths and weakness, then transitioned to the B Pony. BnZ was much fun so I started messing with flaps and turn fighting in it. I died a lot, but the low and slow victories were worth it. Now I've moved on to the Mossie VI, I think all those years in a 51 down low made me a better Mossie pilot. Just my .02
-
I started in the F4U-1 we didn't have the -1A in AH yet, and I still enjoy flying the birdcage. I have loved the corsair since I was a kid and naturally gravitated towards them both here and in AW. 109's are my other go to ride. They really fit my flying style and have forced me to be better in things like throttle control where I could be more lax with the corsair. The other plane I really like is the 38. I would like to be better in a 38, but I don't spend enough time in them to be very proficient.
One thing I would recommend is to get with a trainer and work with him as much as you can. A skilled trainer will see things that you're doing, or not doing and give you the input needed to improve. No matter what plane you fly if you don't have the basic skills needed to survive and get into position to shoot the other guy down you will not be very successful and that will become very frustrating for you. Also when starting out you should expect to die a lot. In AH it's o.k. to die as long as you learn something. At first just try to survive, then try to get position, and so on and so forth.
I'm not a big fan of the uber planes for beginners, Sure you can get kills in a spit 16, or -4 hog but they let you get away with bad habits that will get you killed in a lesser planes. Imho it is better to start with one of the lesser marks, such as a spit 8, or -1A and learn to fight in well in it before moving to the top tier plane. That being said there is a world of difference between a spit 8, and a -1A hog and the spit 8 would be far more favorable to someone just starting out as opposed to the hog.
-
I started in the Spitfire Mk IX because it was the only Spitfire and I subscribed to fly Spitfires. I have liked and read about Spitfires for decades.
Eventually I got sick of the constant insults to anybody who dared fly them and, seeing as the Mossie is also a great plane, started advocating for it to be added. Once the Mossie was added I made it my primary ride for the most part.
-
When I first started I was all over the show..usually between yak9u,LA7,and niki( more the latter two as they packed punch).. My first real ride I spent time in was the spitV but after a month or two Spatula said I should try the IX which I did for about 5 or 6 tours...This was a good stable platformto help me last just a few seconds more and gave me a chance to learn more ACM as getting shot down straight after the merge was getting me no where fast... after this I spent time in the Yak9U but found I didn't really like it but loved the T....did these for about 2 tours and flagged it...My next longest ride time was the P40e (pre extra additions) I spent many tours in that...really liked it (still do)...Then one day I decided to up a Ki61 after continuously getting trounced by Odege and totally enjoyed the experience..still do...Have been using the Tony as my main ride for near 3 years now..I do use other planes here and there but as my stats will show 95% of my time is in the Ki

I first started out flying the P51D in the DA my first battle I lost horribly lol but after I got into the tower I got a good lecher from one of the fellas in the DA at that time he used words I didn't even understand lol but when I got my JS I stepped into something a bit more..........ancient :t The P40E this was way before the remodel it still had the highspeed flaps and wep on it when I started AH I loved that aircraft then I took a step further and started flying the 38J decided I didn't really like it so I got into the 38L for about a year or so that was my main ride now I'm starting to fly the P40 more along with the P39 the 39 is the goto A2A furball plane with that big honking 37mm and the twin 50s in the nose mhmhmhmmm sexy bird no doubt lol but you have to be choosey about your shots because you only have 30 37mm rounds but that should be 30 kills lol if you can hit with every round that is :P
-
I started by flying a whole bunch of birds without having a clue what their strengths and weaknesses were. I tried a lot of the low ENY planes and had little to no success (because I had no idea what I was doing). The first bird I found success in was the Yak-9U which I loved. More recently I have been flying the Spit 9 which is great but I've moved back the Yak-9U again.
-
As I recall, I started with the F4Us. That was hard so I went to Spits cause I knew what they were and always liked the look. I lived a lot longer and started killing a few planes. Met "Jolly" who showed me the basics of flight, setting up the map, what all the keys do, etc. Started going through the plane set and and found that the KI84 fit me well. Its a great plane at the alts I like, for versatility & surviving in a furball. Its been my main ride ever since but I try and fly everything a bit. Most planes are good at something and dangerous if flown to that strength. I bomb a lot in the F6F, P47, & P51.
If you want to mix it up, its hard to beat the Spit XVI. It is forgiving of pilot choices that other planes won't ket you get away with. Don't pay any mind to it being "easy". Choosing to fly or not to fly something because of what others whine about is silly. Learning ACM, managing your energy state, and accurately assessing your opponents energy state takes a long time. Someday I might start :D
-
Started flying the spits when I had my first taste of AH back in 2005, after many breaks sometimes years long I finally committed to learning to really fly end of 2012, and these days I'm obsessed with the Ta-152
-
Started out in the 51 and Spits because of their history. Now I fly 109s and 51s and Spits and Navy planes! Also I'm working with the Dora... :airplane:
-
F4U's.
Can out turn anything faster and is faster than anything it can't turn with. Good guns, pretty durable, and can up from a boat.
The French call that impressionnant.
-
I started here with the F4u-1D. It was a hard plane to fly back then and I had a hard time keeping it in the sky. Switched over to the NIK. great guns good speed, good turn. It was easier to fly so while I got use to the flight model in this game as apposed to the "other game" it was a fun bird to fight in. Once I got settled in I got back in the Hog for a while and finally switched to the 38.
-
Started with the FW-190A5 and A8, because it was the plane I flew most in Warbirds and Air Warrior. Lately its been P-38s Japanese aircraft and Jugs.
-
I started out as a Spittydweeb. :D
I thought the Spitfire was the most beautiful aircraft ever (and it is pretty), and I flew nothing but spits. Then somewhere along the line I realized the 109 not only looks just as nice, but it also has that "dogfighter" look to it. I quickly found out that the 109 has everything the spitfire has and then more! :devil
-
started w/ pony, coz that was my ride in AW - RR. it was a different animal in AH. found Spit 9 and F6F more my style. don't fly much anymore, lost the desire, but still dig blowing toejam up so you can usually find me in a T35-85 or running troops / supplies
-
I started with the Ki61 because I had played a little bit of Warbirds before coming here and the Ki61 in warbirds is a pretty easy plane to fly. I realised it was a poop load harder to fly in here and went to the LA7 as it was my second ride of choice in Warbirds, that worked out pretty well for me.
-
I have always loved airplanes. When I was in high school, I started to seriously study the different planes from WWII. I discovered the P38, and that was it! It has been my favorite plane for years. I started in Warbirds, and now Aces High, so that I could get a chance to fly my favorite WWII plane.

:devil :devil :devil :devil Hurri2 and now anything that will compress in 2k ! :huh :huh :huh :huh :huh :huh

109F4. Flew Jane's WWII Flight Sim before coming to AH, so I kind of knew what to expect. Tried out all the 109s, found the F4 to be most easy. Jumped around a lot trying all the planes in H2H. Now, I like all the 109s, P38s, Ki-84 and most recently, F6F. Since they're all fun to get slow and low on the deck.
-
Started with the SpitV...Squad deal plus I suked TERRIBLY
NOW...P51D....cause I still suk terribly but I do it with speed!!!
-
I started with the JugD-11, spent 1 1/2 years in the spitV, then went to the hog-1 for 7years... still fly the 1-hog alot... but I've been flying in as many as I've ever flown in lately... Why did I pick the hog-1??? Chicks dig gullwings! :rock
-
There were only 4 or 5 planes in here when I started, gravitated to the N1k, flew it for quite a while. I fly lots of different aircraft now but kind of partial to the 109's.

-
I started in the P38J . . . trained extensively in it with DrSpek.
Shortly after was trained in the Spitfire 9 (My Pink Steed)
Then began 109K4 training with DrBone before I vanished. . .
In the years I have been playing I switched around in the aircraft learning their weaknesses and such.
-
I honestly don't recall the first few I flew in, because it was so long ago. However I do recall that I enjoyed gunning for lanc buddies on long HQ raids, and for fighters some of my earliest "fond" memories include F4us and some P-51Bs.
-
AW didn't matter what fighter I tried...same result failure! AH found the only way to get initail success was from a PT boat platform. I learned to shoot. Well if you put a PT boat in the air you'd call it a B17. 999000 <S>
-
47's then 109's and 38 for a bit now yaks
-
Spit(forgiving)->Pony(fast lots of ammo)->109-G6( Wanted to fly Axis in FSO so started flying this)-> nothing in particular been a a/c vagabond for awhile now been giving the Typhoon a go lately.
-
La7. I figured that the plane being so good would make the flaws in my flying most obvious.

Lol. When I tried flying fighters (N1K at 1st) I'd get so excited my hands would shake, making accurate aiming impossible. Add to that a quick realization that I had poor situational awareness and 3D thinking and I, like you, realized I was going to have to try something else (i.e., bombers). I've yet to achieve your uncanny accuracy, but I think I'm making slow but steady progress....
We've bumped into each other 2x--B17s vs Ki67s once, and B26 vs B26 the other time. You won both battles, but at least I took some of your drones down with me. Looking forward to the day we bump into each other again!
-
Molybdenum, <S> I always figured that the guy who "won" is the one who had fun <S> till we meet again! 999000

I started out in my very first months in the F6F and F4F because they were always my favorite planes when I was younger and then for a few years went through just about every plane in the plane set flying them each exclusively for a couple weeks at a time, from the 190A5 to the Mossi to the Niki to the 109G6 so on and so on. I always have to have a favorite but could never settle on one plane so I got to learn the ins and outs of most planes. Then after a while I settled on the Spit9 and flew that for a few months, then went to the 51, took a 2 year break, and have flown the 51 ever since coming back. It's just the quintessential World War 2 fighter and I enjoy the history behind it as well.
-
I grew up fascinated by the Battle of Britan and the ensuing European air war so when I signed up for AW 17 years ago my first choice was the Spit IX which I flew religiously (My brother was at my house one day and I actually got him to try playing. We were in a Pacific arena and he chose the Hellcat. More on that later) so I came to AH and stuck with the Spit IX.
When the Spit lineup was expanded the 2x20mm, 2x.50 cal package was eliminated from the IX but reappeared on the XVI. I didn't like the .303's so switched to the XVI.
Along the way I've flown the entire planeset to at least a 2:1 K/D ratio in one camp on a few occasions in order to learn every plane at least rudimentally.
So where am I today? Here's my top flown planes (roughly in order) although now I play so little it might take months to get to the lower on the list:
Spit IX (Fighter)
FW190A-8 (Fighter/Buff Hunter)
F6F-5 (I told you we'd get back to it... Fighter/Attack)
Bf109K-4 (Fighter)
Lancaster (Bomber)
Honorable mention (other planes I like to fly on occasion):
A6M2, AR234, Bf-110G-2, Boston, D3A-1, F4F-4/FM2, Ju-87, Ki-61, Me-163, P-38G, Spit V, Spit XVI
-
I honestly don't recall the first few I flew in, because it was so long ago.
Demented at such a young age...
In the beginning I flew anything that had tons of ammunition. like the Fw 190 A-8. I recall being laughed at almost literally rolling on the floor when I upped a 190 straight up like a rocket, then when the thrust ran out I came down like a lift, tail first. Later I have been flying almost entirely the Bf 109 G-6 with gondolas. The stiffness of it makes an excuse for my poor skills, but in case I hit something there'll be a big hole.
-
Spit16 for a month because even the dumbest newb could find some success in that.
Then 109 G6 from 2010 September to 2012 May.
Since that, 190 D9 only.
-
I started on the P-47 (really rough learning curve :cry), and can now fly anything but P-38's and Typhoons comfortably. Well, and the 262 and 163, but most struggle with those as well.
-
My very first week was in a Spit V because the player who got me into AH (Stimpy) said I should start with something easy even tho' I'd been sim flying offline for years. Hated it, too slow and everyone just ran away.
Switched to the 190D and pretty much flew it almost exclusively for three years. Got pretty good in it, but admittedly it was all BnZ for the most part (tho' I'd do some ACM when the need arose). In all I feel those years were not completely wasted, as the Dora both is and is not the easiest plane for a noob to get kills in i.e. easy to BnZ...not so much so turning and burning down low.
Switch over on a dare to the 51 and realized why people who flew it landed so many kills. Sheesh....for someone who flies Doras the Pony is a BnZ dream come true...but it got boring as well.
When I went "DA-only" for a few years I flew the Seafire almost exclusively....wanted to turn and burn and I still love her.
Now I pretty much fly anything....I gravitate towards one plane or another for a few months, then get bored and try something else. Not sure if this is a good practice or not....but I have fun so who cares, eh?
-
When I thought of WW2 aircraft I always assumed the P-51d was the pinnacle of prop aircraft development. Having served after the war and shooting down a jet fighter it had to be the best no?
Flew the La-7 for awhile even though back in 2003 you were ostracized for flying one by the vets of the time. Now it seems to have shifted to the spits mostly. The la la really taught you to conserve ammo and the noob in me would find empty guns very quickly. :uhoh
Like the 190's now even though they are outclassed by many rides which makes the kills even more enjoyable. :D
Have the 190's have been slowed down and the p-51's, F4u's, Spits, Yak3's overmodeled?
It don't matter to me. :old:
-
Like most I wanted to fly the 51D but found it hard to get kills in. So I flew a niki for the first year as it has big guns, lots of rounds and turns fairly well. Then I went back to the 51D and stayed in it for the next 4 or 5 years, occasionally flying the P38s. Now I've recently transitioned to the P47s. Will probably fly those for the next couple of years and then go to the 109s and P38s.
-
I started out in EW with 109F-4 but once I started flying in the MA I used the P-51D. I do a lot of ords porking and the 51D can kill all four ords at a large base with just the MGs and two 500 ponders and fly home. You can fly it like you stole it and nothing breaks or falls off and only a few other planes can match the speed of the P-51D. I have fired thousands of rounds of 50cal in real life and I feel the 50s killing power in Aces High is a bit low. The 50cal is a round that out performs what it says on paper in my experience.
-
I started in tanks and bombers. First fighter sorties were in JUGS. I haven't changed since tour 50.
-
The A6M5B is my go-to. And it was what helped me understand alot about fighting 1v1 and strategizing. It can do most anything you ask, it's only real weakness is you don't want to get hit much, and it's not very fast if something tries to run. It's the plane that got me really thinking about how to get on people's six more quickly, and how to turn a bad fight my way. When you do get in bad fights they usually last longer, teaching you more.
I learned how to use flaps and flap turn in a NIK. Though the F4U is probably good for that too. 190-D is good for learning to pick things off of bigger fights, and using the advantage of speed. LA-7 helped me adjust to front wing slats in an easier way than 109's in my opinion. The combo of learning 190 and LA-7 made 109's alot easier to fly.
-
Started with 190a8 (perk farmer) then 109g6 (perk farmer), then mossie (perk farmer), p47 d11 (perk farmer) p39d (perk farmer) for boat rides f4f and zero 32 (perk farming) and during all the years learning these planes i spending all my perks on crashing 262s
-
P38.....found it easier to aim then other rides.
LA7......found it easier to avoid other enemy planes
Typhoon...... very is gunnery and pretty easy to avoid enemy
K4......started wanting to learn ACM
KI84.....beat mode
Mossy.......fun to get down and dirty in
TA152......same as mossy just harder
Now I don't fly anything.... too much work
-
I started with the Zero knowing it was the best turner....flew that for a couple months...got sick of always being put on fire jumped around until I found the Hurri2C, flew that almost exclusively for 2 plus years...got sick of it being out run from every one.... started looking again for a faster plane that still fought well and found the Ki84.....been hooked ever since...although in the years playing I have flown all the fighters, to learn them.
-
Started out with the Seafire and the Hurricane 2C as they are slower planes and I found them easier to control. Plus, the hispano cannons made it easier to take down an enemy once I finally got on someones 6. Stayed with the slower turn fighters in the beginning, graduating to the A6M5 Zero as I figured I could at least out turn my enemy if nothing else. The early 109's are kind of fun also, 109E and 109F as they are pretty good turners and fairly easy to control. Took me a while to get graduate to the speed planes.

1996 La5FN (AW)
2001 La5FN (AH)
2001 La7
2013 Yak3
-
My first tour (tour 24), I flew the Spitfire Mk.V at first. I guess I did okay, because I managed 78 kills for 46 deaths as a rank noob. Flying the Zero that tour, the score wasn't so good at 80 kill, 90 deaths. But, I would repeatedly up from a capped field despite getting vulched. I finished my first tour with a 0.93/1 K/D. That was the only tour where I was under 1 to 1. I wasn't a very good shot, and had no ACM skills. I did, however, have good SA and was smart enough to pick fights where I had a chance to win, and avoid getting ganged often. I was also an unabashed cherry picker...
-
I flew the K4 to begin with. I liked the rate of climb and the speed. Besides, the toughest gun to sort out is the tater, figured if I got good in the K4 at flying and aiming, all other irplanes in the game would be easier.
Ran down a guy in a U4, the whole time he was bragging on 200 ... go away 109, etc .... caught him and tatered him, it was awesome.
Turn the stall limiter off, find a plane that has a singular performance edge and learn to exploit its strengths. Good luck. :airplane:
-
Judging by the way most people fly in the MA I'm thinking most start out in p51/f4u/la7 with stall limiter on. I've said it before and I'll say it again, noobs should start out in something that they can't run away in if they want to learn how to fight.
-
I was just looking at my stats for tour 34...
I flew the SBD as a fighter quite a bit, and finished with 62 kills in the SBD (55 of them aircraft) and 22 deaths... What was I thinking? :headscratch:
-
I didn't know how to use a tank till my third year. :noid

A6M2 Zero.
I started flying Spitfires and 109s regularly after a few months of training with the Zero. I still like to use the Zeros even so, depending on the situation. It's all about agility.

My main ride progression in AH
The first time I played I flew the Yak because thats what I flew in Air Warrior.
Yak here didnt fly like the Yak in AW so I switched to the FM2 which was my main ride for a long while. Because I could fly it like I flew the Yak in Air Warrior.
I then moved onto the Typhoon. Flew that as my main ride I think for over a year.
Then I moved onto the NIKI and flew that for over a year.
Then I few the 110G and 109F setting on the 109F for at least a couple of years.
Started dallying with the 190's and spent about 6 months with the A5 but eventually settling on the D9 where I have been ever since
All during my time here I've also dabbled a bit in most of the planes. If nothing else its the best way to learn how to kill them. The only plane I dont and wont fly is the spit.
Oh, I did spend a month in the C202 after letting the folks here on the boards pick my ride for a month

Oh, I did spend a month in the C202 after letting the folks here on the boards pick my ride for a month
You're welcome! :devil :t
-
Started AH in the P-38L and then switched over to the P-38J when it was added.
ack-ack
-
Oh, I did spend a month in the C202 after letting the folks here on the boards pick my ride for a month
The 202 used to be good perk farmer, turned and climbed like the old spit9. It got nerfed when aces high II came out. My first flight in AH2 I was in a 202, got in a low speed, flat turning fight with an la7 on the deck and it out turned me without much trouble. I wasn't in kansas anymore. I'm not sure if the new FM made high wing load planes turn better or low wing load planes turn worse.
-
I always thought of the P51 and the Corsair as the two American planes of the war, so I fly them because that's what I thought of as a boy. I still fly them.
-
Flew the Niki as my main ride for the first 1-2 months, then for the third month I went Hurricane 1. Flew that almost exclusively, and ended my first tour with a + K/D.
Now I cannot fly a plane for more then a few times before I am looking to pick another one.
True I will never master one plane, but I am never really shocked about what a plane can do... except that brewster! JK Wmaker
-
Before I subscribed, I burned up my brother's perks on Tempests. Yeah, that pissed him off! :bolt:
From the time I subscribed nearly 10 years ago up to now, I love the Yaks. Short on ammo, but it's agile.
As far as anything with four engines... From the time I started, the B17 is my all time favorite and always will be. Durable, lethal, and an all-around fun plane.
-
I logged into the arena for the first time and there were two planes attacking the field.
I upped a N1K2 and got two quick kills in my first 6 minutes of playing and never flew it again and was worried that everything was that easy.
Well.....I did fly it once more to check super high altitude performance.
I stopped worrying after flying the 110g a few times.
-
We only had 5 or 6 planes when I started....it was one of those. :old:
Yak 9U (holdover from Warbirds) was always my favorite, can't remember if it was one of the 1st planes though. If anyone can remember what the original planeset was I'd welcome a kick in the brainpan.
These days you'll mostly find me in a P47 D-11.

I seem to recall the beta planes as N1K, spit9, 51D and the 190A8, but I am old, memory kind of shot.

The first squad I was in flew the Spit XI most frequently, so I did too. Learned it didn't really fit my preferred flight profile. I marveled at the success people like AKDogg were having in the Hog's so I grabbed a trainer (TC) and learned its tricks.
Few hogs most always until I tried a 47M. Since I hate running, picking pony drivers I found I could either scare off, or catch them in an M, which pleased me, so it became my primary ride. I also find killing bombers is good sport and 8 .50's makes them burn pretty.
Lately I have been dabbling in the 47-d11 to make it a bit more of a challenge. Getting almost 5 perks a kill is also fun.

Sounds a lot like me, 'cept I like teh Spit9 instead of the XVI, but for teh same reasons. <why can't I stop typing "teh"?> Anyway, after many fun fights between me in my pony and Reschke in his F4U-1/ 1A, I took a real interest in teh Hog <damn there it is again!>.

You're welcome! :devil :t
No problem. Was fun and made for a change of pace and folks here seemed to get a kick out of it.

I started with the 190A8...I have flown most things now but spent a lot of time with P38 and 109s....and I have now ended it all with the 190A8.
-
what warbird did you start with in aces high? why? and now?
I started both.
HiTech :devil
-
I started with the P38...still up it most of the time but I tend to fly 234 as often as possible in the MA.
-
KI84 and the 205
-
I started both.

Incomplete answer, you didn't give the "why" and "how" Mr Smartypants :neener:

The first plane I really spent time with and tried to learn was the 109F in early war. I started with the F, becouse the fighter pilot motto was speed was life, and it had the most in early war. Flew this for a year or two and it taught me many great things, throttle control, E-management, and most importantly patience. As most planes in early war could out turn it and the F didn't have great firepower to kill on snapshots readily, I had to pick my proper timings, keep my E up to keep me out of trouble from the better turning aircraft, and fly for a good tracking shot. So the 109F is the bird that really made me the pilot I am today. I went from this to the 109G2 in Midwar, which is another favorite airframe of mine, which basically flies as a more powerfull slightly heavier F. Not long after this I discovered the F4U-1. With the E-management skills I learned from the 109's, I was able to make up for the Hogs inability to regain E quickly, by hanging on to what it had. Combined with the F4U's 6 .50's hitting power (which the early 109's lacked) and it's ability to get into a fight with a large amount of E built up, made it a wonderfull all around aircraft. The 1A took the -1 a step further in performance and became my ride of choice and what I primarily taught for the last 4 years or so. I have to give an honorable mention to the A20 as it also played a large part in my early aces high career. Being a good fighter pilot with an A20, is an extreme example of E management skill. If you want to forced to learn E-management, dog fight with A20's.

HT what was the original planeset? I was thinking the LA5 was one of them.
-
I started both.
HiTech :devil
I see what you did there.

I started on the P-51, the noob I was at the time told me that it would be a breeze to get kills in... the guys in the MA tout me otherwise. I was eventually told to fly spits since they were more forgiving. I ended up flying the spit 8 for 2 or 3 years. I then started looking around for a more *ahem* respectable plane to fly, and ended up falling in love with the P-47 series.
My suggestion for the noobs is to fly the spits to learn the ACMs you need to survive (without raming, hoing, or running), and then move to a more challenging plane. The ACMs usually stay the same (sometimes some new ones become available), but the skill to put them into practice is dramatically different.

Yes it was.
Beta Tour 1:

Bf 109K-4
C-47A
Fw 190A-8
La-5FN
N1K2
P-51D
Spitfire Mk IX

First one was the Spit V, since it was one of the planes that helped win the war. It was fine, but I didn't like some of the stall characteristics in it. So I spent quite a bit of time in the TA learning other planes and eventually discovered the 109G2 was the best balance of what I wanted. Right now, 109F's and the G2 are my main fighter rides with the 110's for bomber interceptors and Hurricane II's for attack role. As far as bombers, that changes. I used B24's to strat bomb when I was bored, but now I use B26's in MW and Bostons in EW for perk farming. Funny enough, until I got a new computer I couldn't use B17's or even be near one, because my computer would lag so bad I would someone's free kill.

Thx Snail...I had forgotten the 1st 109 was the, (then designated) K4.

I don't think it was designated the K-4. The stats don't show the G-10 anywhere because that unit number was renamed K-4 and thus the stats always show K-4, even if it was called the G-10 at the time.
It was, of course, actually always a K-4 regardless of what it was called.

When AH had a free side, I flew a 51 and BnZ'd everything lol....
I flew it because of it's historical reference then gradiated much later to a 4hog and learnded how to do that ACM thing and now the 4hog remains in my hard drive that crashed.

Thank you again Karnak. :) :salute

started with spit 9s and 8s. Easy to fly decent gun package and has a chance (although small) against seasoned vets. Then started to fly the p38j and P51b. Flew those for quite a while and had this one player in a 15k Fm2 hand my tail to me a few times. Tried the FM2 out and It has been my main ride for a while now although I also fly the 110g2 and yak9t now. What ever ac you like. stick with it for a while and you will get better in it. :salute
-
my first stick didn't have rudder control so i used the p38 cause it would take off straight...now i like the italian 205 seems to fit my style ...but the situation determins the ride...seafire off the cv, german 110 when i need to bomb**** then fight, niki when its base defence and i know i will die soon in a turny fight, for bombing i have stuck with the lancs so i could get good at it
-
The aircraft that I flew the most when I started was the C-47. I suppose that it was based the same reasons that was a goaltender in ice hockey. You are playing the game just a little bit differently than everyone else.
I still enjoy supplying other players and taking bases.

P51-D as it was required flying by the 13th Tas
FM2 when the first squad duels were going.
Each squad got to pick a ride for one duel. We were sure that one of the squads we were up against would pick the FM2.
One of our newer squaddies was familiar with it and spent a lot of time showing us how bestbto fly it.
From that point i never really wanted to fly anything else.
Lately i have tried the Brewster, it definately has some interest for me
