This is my last new skin for a while, 2cap requested it and lyric1 found me some photos and profiles for it.
It is a razorback Thunderbolt of the 317th FS, 325th FG flown by Lt Warren Penny who was credited with four kills while serving with the group. It is unusual for a 325th Thunderbolt in that is bare metal and unusual for a bare metal aircraft in that it lacks an anti-glare strip on the nose.
The 325th's squadrons swapped their P-40s for P-47s in late 1943 as they moved from North Africa to Italy, commencing operations in December. They flew mostly escort missions over southern Europe for B-17s and B-24s based in southern Italy, defending against Luftwaffe and ANR fighter attacks. In May 1944 they traded their Thunderbolts in for P-51s.
You can see a colour photo of the real plane here (http://www.ww2color.com/nennius/webapps/slides/slides.php?action=update&primary_key=09708).

Greebo awesome looking skin sir!!! The 325th VFG thanks you for your efforts.
The 325th VFG stays in touch with a few of the real aces from the 325th FG and they flew the 47's and 51's out of Italy. I'll make sure this makes it to them.
Thank you again for your efforts in skin creation. It really makes flying the game a little better when your in the period colors of the time and AC <S> Also we happen to also have a large stash of 325th FG archive gun footage and personnel pictures etc. If you were willing to build more 325th FG skins I could see if getting you copies or prints would be possible.

the pic link p47 has an anti glare panel on the nose though just extremely faded.
you can see by looking at the nose and the change in color right in front of the canopy.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Cit, I'm not really seeing a faded anti-glare panel in that photo. Lyric1 also sent me a couple of b&w photos of this plane and I'm not seeing it on those either.

All:
One of the neat things about the 325th VFG is that we stay in touch with the real remaining pilots from the 325th FG. Many of them aces themselves and have been on the Discovery Channel and alike. A reunion of the 325th FG pilots just finished in Conn. and one of our long time 325th VFG pilots "Swoop73" attended and supported the reunion. Of course I copied and sent everything from this thread on the 47 Skin and see if any of them remembered LT Penny and or this AC without the paint on the nose to cut the glare. Below is the message I received back form Swoop73:
"I showed pictures to Barrie Davis as we sat in hotel lobby this morning. He was about to be interviewed by National Geographic. He knew right away. The guy had the only unpainted P47 in the unit. He is also the one flying the Mustang named "Bad Penny", so named because a bad penny always comes back. Look in the Checkertail book and you'll see the photo. He was dead shortly after that picture was taken after a mid air crash. Also Barrie commented on the detail of the skin that had been created, very life like and great detail". - Swoop73
Barrie Davis is a real ace and flew with the 325th from 43' till the end if I remember correctly and had 6 kill's. From the time of the 47's through the 51's. Barrie would stay in the Air Force and have to transition over to cargo AC as there were to many Fighter pilots and not enough Fighter Planes following the end of WWII and then the transition to Jets of course. He would retire as a Col with more than 25 years of service. It was an honor to meet him once myself and pay for his dinner.
Always great to get a little real world feedback from the real aces of WWII on our little cartoon flying world. Greebo your skin put a smile on a 325th FG ace from WWII. Nicely Done sir <S>

Thank you Viper61 and Swoop73, that's a great story and I'm glad Barrie Davis liked the skin. I've submitted it, so hopefully it should be available online in the next few weeks.

I believe he flew P-51C-5 42-103519 #24 with the 317th.

The P-51C-5 was transfered to the 319th and re-numbered 80 re-named "Little Joe Too" flown by Bruce Cobb.

His P-51C and D were both numbered 24 and named "Honey Bee"?
Maybe you could confirm that Viper!
:salute Mr. Barrie Davis

Greebo, I want to thank both you and Lyric1 for your time and effort with my request. It's a great skin choice and as usual you knocked it out of the park.
I can't wait to see her in game. :airplane: Thanks again. :salute
P.S. I left a bott... errr.. a 1/2 bottle of Crown Royal Reserve in the O club for ya. :aok
