Title: He111 20mms?
Post by: Skyguns MKII on August 08, 2013, 02:23:23 PM
The more I think about it the more I wonder. Why did the germs decide to place the 2 20mm gunner position forward firing and not for 6oclock defense in place of where the rear firing 7.7 mms are? It just seemed backwards to me. Was it for expected head on attacks?  :headscratch:

It was used in the anti shipping role where the bomber flies low over a merchant ship and strafes it.

We do in some terrains used in scenarios and other special events (thank you, terrain team!  :aok )

The lower front gondola gun was more for attacking targets on land or sea, but it was used for defense when possible. The nose gun was more of a deterrent to stave off head-on attacks, since it was an all-glass canopy (not really glass, you know what I mean), and was unarmored for the most part. It made the pilot extremely vulnerable. The problem was the extra firepower wasn't very helpful because it was slow-firing and didn't deter head-ons that much.

They were never meant for AH's tail-chase-full-throttle-drag-it-out-for-10-sectors nonsense.

1-2 20 mm wouldn't do much to a barge. Would it? I remember them being pretty tough.

Thank you for that. You've explained in detail.  :salute

A barge requires 157 lbs of damage, which amounts to 49 hits by the MG/FF

It also works great on ack and pt boats...although you present a rather inviting target
