Title: Pilot wounds
Post by: 9thAFE on August 10, 2013, 12:08:36 PM
Im sure you hardcore elitists will cane me for saying it but can anything be done about the ridiculous amount of Pilot Wounds in a pony, 5 straight flights the first shot PW's me, coming from the fricking ground ack or wirbs doesn't even make sense, not like im flyin upside down low and slow, I get the pony had a bigger canopy for sight but that's ridiculous, if it was that bad in the war the pony wouldn't have been flown by anyone.

Try maneuvers that don't make your pilot vulnerable.
If its due to ack, well, hits are randomized.

20mms have the ability to go through your cockpit floor and hit your pilot. I even had my top turret taken out on my Lancaster because of ground fire its not uncommon. Just sounds like you've been unlucky lately

ridiculously unlucky, and I don't typically throw my pilot head towards the guns I could be nose up on another plane turning away and still get PW, it just happened to me a second ago AGAIN

WAY WAY WAY Frustrating, I know im not the greatest of Fighter guys by any means but good lord I cant even get a chance to engage anyone or anything cause I get PW at the first merge every time or random ack shot. I know im not making it that easy to get a canopy shot on me im not that terrible.

I notice I get more PW's with bubble Canopys.
Do you have a film of your fights?
Some of us can maybe tell you what you need to do to help you prevent this in the future

no I don't record them, Im sure some of it is my fault like I said I always been bomber pilot for 2+ years, just been flyin fighters last 3 weeks a lot more than ever did before really tryin to get better in them, But it just seems ridiculous that I get PW on the very first shot at me in about 6 flights in a row no matter what orientation I am in compared to whats shooting at me, I get the pony has bigger canopy but the last 2 weeks I haven't been getting PW this much or this easily, and im a better stick now than I was 2 weeks ago not that im great now but you know what I mean. It just sucks cause I cant even engage with anyone and try to get better cause its over before I even start the last 3 days. just seems a bit fishy to me is all. Or maybe it is extremely bad luck for 3 days lol. As if trying to tackle the huge learning curve for fighters wasn't bad enough when you get PW every sortie before you even get to have any fun dogfighting its almost enough to just give up fighters all together  :bhead :bhead.

You just have been in a bad luck rut.
Btw I reccomend recording your fights. It actually helps with future fights seeing what you did and you will see what not to do next time, and  it will enable others to help you.

.303s have that ability too as cockpit floors, other than the Il-2, were not armored.  The bottom of the pilot's seat is armored in many planes, but that still leaves your legs vulnerable or your body if the round comes in from your low 12.

I don't run into this problem much.  Most of my playing is tool shedding so ammo bunkers, vh's and ack are my targets.

Many of my ack hits are from quite a distance.  Give the Mark9 gunsite a try.  Works for me.

If I see in not going to dodge a shot, I always roll to take it  from below. Better chance, if still not a great chance.

I think it's how your flying it. While the pony isn't one of the toughest birds it does take some damage. I fly it a lot and rarely get pilot wounds. Film a few flights and post them here. I'm sure you'll get a lot of tips. Also, checking in with a trainer in the TA might help

I have spent some time with Buff, while not new he did fly bombers for along time and is branching out to fighters.

I think a lot of it may be do to the size difference in the planes, there's plenty of area to hit on a bomber and not even be close to the pilot but a fighter is a different subject.

Buff just need some more seat time and to learn not to fly the gunsight at the enemy!

You call 330mph true at 28,000ft slow????
Maybe snailman could shed some light on the subject....

I said or really slow due to the fact I have no clue what your air speed was.

At 28k, 330 is actually pretty slow. Less than the speed of some bombers, and over 100mph slower than some of the fastest fighters.

:airplane: Another reason we lose some players needlessly to something that should not be a once in 25 flight thing!

I used to get pilot wounds at a ridiculous rate and have literally hundreds of films showing really stupid pilot wound events.

I have no idea what changed to make them go away. But...it wasn't / isn't the way I fly!!!!!

There's no way I'm spending ridiculous amounts of time to make little films for everyone to give advice over. (end of mini-rant)

I know from experience that this wish is valid.

+1     ---   Please consider tweaking the pilot wound model to make it more...well...better. Thank You

Thx Kvuo, it's just another way to say pure pursuit without confusing the player!

lead, pure and lag pursuits can often confuse a player, especially when they hear lag as it is easy to think internet connection.

So many players fly their gunsight at the enemy, simply because they don't know any better way.

I'd say just bad luck. In 38 Mossie strat missions (all with formation) I lost 3 mossie bombers to puffy ack and only one of them was by PW. The other two: Direct hit with instant explosion / Two unfortunate successive hits on the lead bomber killing both engines.

At 28k, 330 is actually pretty slow. Less than the speed of some bombers, and over 100mph slower than some of the fastest fighters.

I don't know many bombers making 330mph at 28k with full bombload, so I would not call that "pretty slow" in this specific context ;)

I sympathize with fighter pilots, as a bomber pilot I can just jump to a gunner, use rudder and fly it seems any distance, saving pilot for landing.

I have found that tabbing out of the game will save the pilot...
