Pretty sure it needs to match the native resolution of your monitor. Hope that helps.

Had a 1920x1080 monitor died a few months ago. Switching to a 1360x768 monitor, the game still recognized the settings at 1920x1080 and the screen was all pixelated and warped. Took me longer than I want to admit to figure out I had to switch the resolutions to 1360x768.

I suspect that you can run the game at lower than the resolution of your monitor. It might give better frame rate for folks with old equipment. Make sure to use the same aspect ratio as your screen, though (for example, if you have a 1920x1080 monitor, you can probably run it at 1280x720, etc.).

There is no default resolution for the game. When the game is run, for the first time, it uses the resolution of your Windows desktop.
