Title: What is the greatest samurai movie?
Post by: Karnak on August 17, 2013, 10:26:27 PM
I know many will jump on the obvious one, Seven Samurai, but though that is a great movie I think I prefer Yojimbo.  For me Seven Samurai feels a bit long.  It has a lot of great scenes, such as this one of the duel between the swordsman and an unknown samurai (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMWsOyOHaaA) and this rather pointed commentary on the corruptness of the whole society (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nha8ICFYMzs), but I enjoy Yojimbo more.

It is interesting how smoothly samurai films translate into westerns and how easily westerns are remade as samurai films.  The cowboy and the ronin are both romanticized loners I guess.  Here is an interesting remix of the final fight in Yojibo with the score from A Fistful of Dollars playing over it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU0R8nMepkU

Which samurai films do you guys like?

Yojimbo
Seven Samurai
Samurai - the three part epic. I love the scene, in the tavern, where he catchs flys with his chopsticks, letting the young punks that are thinking about picking on him in the tavern, know what they would be in for.

And even though it may not technically count as a samurai movie - Rashoman.

As an honorable mention, I would add Shogun - the mini-series with Richard Chamberlin & Toshiro Mufune.

Kurosawa was quite pleased with the movie Magnificent Seven. He admired the works of Ford and Peckinpah.

and now I'm getting hungry for beef teriyaki & sashimi, . . .  and a bit of sake.    :old:

7 Samurai is a brilliant masterpiece.

The latest Zatoichi is also a great movie with a very fresh approach to the genre.

Shogun's shadow is a movie I enjoyed many years ago. In this case it seems to be the opposite of 7 Samurai in the sense that it feels like a western translated into samurai.

One of my favorites is "The Sword of Doom", although it's been ages since I saw it.  I ran across it by chance while watching IFC one weekend.

Then again, A Fistful of Dollars IS Yojimbo...

And wasn't someone doing a remake of Unforgiven as a Samurai movie?

Haha.  Ahahaha.  Ha ha ha ha haaaaaa.

I had high hopes for the new 47 Ronin.  Alas, after seeing the previews, and how they've "magic'd" it up with typical Hollywood flying through the air with laser beam spells and other BS, I don't have ANY hope any longer.  Such a shame, one of the great stories in martial history, and they had to do this with it.

I'll reserve judgment until I see some actual reviews. It may not be a "historical" retelling, but from the as a fantasy movie it looks promising.
