It would be nice if CVs would be shown when they are withing the radar range...
There were naval radars in WWII. There is no reason that CV fleet would be "undetected" near the shore. So if CV gets close it should be quite visible

There goes pretty much most offensive use of cv's then...

Cruiser guns are effective far beyond radar range. I think planes may even be able to fly further than that! ;) A change like this may actually reduce some of the gamey aspects of the way CVs are currently used. +1

I like this idea. +1 :aok

or cv's just shouldn't be allowed that close to begin with.. either way.

What use would cvs have in the game then? I also think that while navel radar was available to the US late in the war other nations radar was far behind in this aspect. I May be wrong about this but wasn't it also a line of sight radar dependent on the curvature of the earth?

~12 miles is not unreasonable. the op asked for cv to show up if it's in a radar ring which makes good sense.
personally I don't think it should even be able to get close enough to be inside the radar ring, but it showing up at all or at least making the base flash would be an improvement.

The radar we have in game are based on the air defense radars used during the war and those were not able to pick up surface targets. Besides that little tidbit, making the CVs detectable by radar would eliminate the surprise attack ability of the fleets. Not in favor of your wish.

I'll say it again.. :old:
In real life, the carrier would NEVER even come close enough to be seen.. NEVER!
And yes there was surface search radar in WW2, on ships, and in Aircraft..
Give us separate invasion fleets to park off shore, so the Carrier won't have to
sit there motor boatin back and forth looking stupid.. Partial Fix for the Problem..
For every "C" task force, there would be a corresponding "I" task force from the same port!
PLEASE :bhead

So all the attacking force would've have to do is fly NOE a little farther out. Then bring in the CV closer as they reach their target. It's stupid seeing the attacking force up so close that the defending force only have 30-60 seconds to up. Which usually means 3-4 people max vs 30.

I've been asking for this for a LONG time. In fact, I'd have three task group types:
1) CV Group - Task Group as it currently exists, however remove LVTs and PTs. Restricted to operating no closer than 25 miles of enemy fields.
2) Bombardment Group - Replace CV with a BB. Add float plane scouts (OS2U Kingfisher, F1M "Pete", etc.) and remove all other vehicle/aircraft spawns. Can close halfway between 25 miles and current minimum approach distance.
3) Invasion Group - 1 LST (LVTs/PTs) escorted by 1 CVE with limited plane set (TBM, SBD, F4F, FM-2, Seafire, A6M, B5N, D3A) and a couple DEs. Respawn triggered by loss of LST. Can close within the current range of shore as current CV groups.

Then that's when I get in my 88mm and light some cigars :rofl

As a coastal command pilot in my B24J Liberator with 1674 HCU skin, you're about to deprive me of my only pleasure in life, which is hunting CVs and downing them.
I take your point, which is about realism, but most oceans in AH are fairly small, on the current map the ocean is less than the sea around the dar ring, CV would spend more time being observed than being hidden.
Come back with that idea when there is hunting of merchant ships and u-boats in the game.

:airplane: Good idea! I would like to see something added to the "pickup missions" on our clip board maps. I would like a mission for the cruiser and 2 destroyers for base or city bombardment, prepping for base capture, etc. The CV from that same port could loiter somewhere close by for aircraft launches for base captures or what have you. I realize for CV protection, you would have to add a couple of destroyers or other types of escort vessels for purposes of protecting the CV. That way, no body could change the mission posted except the person who posted the mission, until it ends.
As far as radar is concerned, I have read and heard that surface ship detection radars, depending on how high the radar antennas were above the deck, could reach out about 65 to 75 miles. Again, the height of the enemy "masts" were sticking up into the air could also have a determining factor on how far you could see other ships. One of the great battles fought in the South Pacific were the night actions in and around what they called the "slot" in the Solaman(spelling) islands chain. The PT boats had radar, but was good only for about 20 mile. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the Navy business than me can discuss this!
