The best way to learn how to fight is to fight and die and learn from your mistakes... but what if you don't know what you're doing wrong or what the right thing to do was?
I'm thinking of starting a video series where I review other players fights either through ahfilms, or FRAPS recordings if you have that (or some other video recording device). I point out where you make mistakes, where you did something right, explain what you could have done better, and explain why the things you did wrong were wrong and why the right way works. I have no idea how this will play out though so I'd like to do at least 1 video to try this idea out and see how well it goes. To do a first "test" video I'm going to need someones film to use.
So, is there anyone out there looking to learn ACM and willing to send me a film to use? If this goes well then I'll definitely try to get off my lazy butt and review more fights from more players. :D

Here one you can take a stab at. There are two fights. What I'd like to know is how/where/when can I be more aggressive in these fights? I get there in the end, well I die to a second con in the second fight, but I feel like I'm taking too much time and letting the enemy regain/not burn his "E".
In the second fight my lack of aggressiveness gives the second con time to set me up.
Any help would be great.

Thanks for the film Fugi! I'll be sure to get to work on the review by tomorrow. Not sure how long it'll take to put this all together, but I'll post it in the Films and Screenshots Forum when it's done. I'm hoping to maybe have it done before the end of next week. :salute

You'll make a great trainer Latrobe. The way you explain things is outstanding.

First little problem I see is the film viewer doesn't show the views 100% correctly. It recorded Fugitive's views but not in the head positions he uses (at least I'm assuming he has set up his views to look around the seat when looking backwards). Anyone know if there's a way to correct this? Does AH save your head positions in your folder? If it does, would I get Fugitives head positions to view 100% correctly in the Film Viewer if he sent me his head position files? Or does the ahfilm viewer only record in default head positions? I can probably get away with reviewing the film from external view, but I'd really like to do it from the cockpit to get the full feel of the fight.

Pretty sure it uses the saved head positions on your system, but I could very well be wrong.

it uses the head positions of whoever recorded the film, unless of course you are using trakir and which case it records none.

I went and saved a head position for looking backwards, didn't use the view in the film.

Ah, then my guess is that Fugitive doesn't have saved head positions and uses the arrow keys to lean around the seat. Does the film viewer only recognize keypad and hat switch inputs? Does it not pick up on using the arrow keys or page up/page down?
-
I do have saved head positions. I don't see why it wouldny show positions after you saved them on your computer. I could post the head positions I use for the plane in the film when I get home.
-

It doesn't. The film viewer saves your head movements only. You could adjust the views while in the viewer, but there are problems. The views you save will be an approximation of your in-game views, as there are no "stops" to limit how far you can adjust while in the film viewer. When you close the film viewer, the new views you saved are gone when you re-open it (IIRC).
-
Oh, you can save head positions in the film viewer! I can work with that! Thanks for the advice caldera! :salute
Fugitive, if you can send me the head positions you use then I'll try to get them as close as I can in the film viewer. :aok :salute

If I may ask, what kind of ACM's would you teach? Defensive, 1 v 1, lag to lead? Or introductory stuff?

In your case it would be 1 vs trees

I guess all of it really. When to take the offensive and attack vs multiple bandits, defensive 1v1, when to use lead, lag, or pure pursuits... it all depends on what fights I get sent and how they play out. Send me a 1v1 fight where you lose the merge and fight defensively the whole time before dying and I'll tell you what you should have done on the merge or how you could have reversed your opponent. Send me a film where you have alt on 3 bandits but you get low and slow and die, and I'll tell you where things went and what you could have done to land 3 kills. :)

Latrobe, you might try using the film in the "Fixed" view with the trails turned on to show flight paths. Might be easier and it would allow you to divide up the flight into sections. Are maybe some combination of external, internal and fixed and just avoid the head postion-view issue.
By the way I think yesterday was national banana split in Latrobe PA.
I will put in a wish to be able to attach Film files to post.

OK, heres the head position file for the p51d. Drop this into your settings/planes folder. Rename your older one so it doesn't over write your settings.

Thanks Fugi! Now I can start planning how this will all work.
I don't need to rename my older ones because I use TrackIR :devil :P :salute

One thing regarding head positions is that having them enabled isn't always the best depending on the pilot and their style.
When I get into a fight, trackIR gets flicked off immediately, as I'm far faster and more accurate with where I want to look with the hat I've been using since they invented hats back in the 286 era.
Also, some pilots, myself included, can use the hat view system extremely rapidly. I often am looking 2 times per second upon reviewing my films, and I'm so used to checking 6 quickly while in a fight with another contact, or even just keeping tabs on that one contact during hard maneuvering - even for me it's hard to follow, and I was the one doing it.
So, if you put up some training videos, please bear that in mind, and maybe put up both options, with and without head positions if you're using an outside film viewer of some sort.
Can't wait for some of these, yay!

Only problem with this is the hat does after 6 years :furious

Ohhhhhhh boy aren't you a piece of work..... lol

good luck with teaching ACM latrobe,
you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink! :old:
there are some really good players out there that not only have the understanding of advanced ACM but the ability to cut it down, analyse key parts of it and then explain what the pilot is doing wrong and where.
Without that level of teaching it is more just follow what I do than learning. The film viewer is the best place to start or 1000 fights in a custom room.
oops I forgot point C) none of the above,
send player A nasty Pm's and hack allegations claiming impossibilities because he just killed you with ease. :t

Be careful with the films. You can fall into a trap by knowing the outcome of the fight. Some times you lose even if don't make a mistake. Focus at the moment ignoring the outcome. For example, sometimes you just guessed wrong or just missed a shot that you gave a everything for. If you hit it you win. If not, you die.

It's all in HOW you look at the films. You lose a fight because either you made a mistake, of the other guy had that little bit better control of his plane than you did. I fly most Saturdays for hours and film most every flight. Sunday I go through all of those films looking for what I did wrong, or what the other guy did right. The idea is to be objective. Knowing the out come isn't a big deal spotting the problem, or they better moves no matter which "pilot" made them.
In the case of the film I posted I get kills.... and killed :D but while I did fly ok in the fights I know I could have been better. The problem is I don't know where I could have done WHAT different to move the fight along better. This is where someone else who knows more fights can possible spot something I can't see. Again, another objective observer.
Films are for training, not entertainment.

Man, this is awesome Latrobe!
I've been trying to get some others to do this but no one was interested for various reasons. I've been in education (teaching) my entire life and believe this is what is lacking in Aces High. The best way to teach something is to let a student try and then show them what/where they did wrong or just did not do. I want to get better and I think you are on the right track to teaching this game correctly.
I will copy my video or videos but how can I get them to you? I could send via an email addy. Is that OK?

If any of you guys want me to review your films, send them to LatrobeAH2@gmail.com (click the email button below my name ;) ).
If you're sending me an AHFilm then please send your head position file for the plane your were flying as well. (Found in your AH2 folder>settings>planes) This way I can set up my film viewer to show your head positions and I can get a better idea of your SA.
If you're sending it in .avi, mpeg, or any other format from FRAPS or other recording software, then the head position file won't be necessary.
The only films I will not be able to review are ahfilms if you use TrackIR or something like it since the films don't record you head movements. If you use TrackIR you will need to record with FRAPS or some other recording software, sorry :(
Don't send a whole bunch of films just yet, I'm still working on how this will work with Fugi's film. Once I get his done and if all goes well then I'll start doing more.

Just a heads up, I've posted the video. You can find it here --> http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,353133.new.html#new
