Title: 110 Sinks Cruiser
Post by: JimmyD3 on August 24, 2013, 09:28:47 PM
Just had a strange experience in MW. We were shelling a base with the cruiser, when a 110 comes out and in 1 strafing pass sinks it?! Is that normal? Didn't know the 110 had it in them. :headscratch:

If the ME-110 dropped 2k worth of ords and hit the cruiser, or if the ME-110 dropped an amount of ords that strafing helped to add up to 2K ords,
or, if the cruiser had been hit previously and the Me-110 dropped, or strafed a sufficient amount of ord that added up to the amount of ord necessary to sink the cruiser in its weakened state, it is possible.

It only takes 2K to sink the Cruiser, or any destroyer...but 8K to sink the CV.

...just some thoughts.

I have sank a cv while straffing with with b26's.  the key is I had already caused a lot of damage with bombs.

I remember a brew strafing down our cruiser a few weeks back  :rofl

While I understand that obviously it was hit before the brew attacked, 30 and 50 cals should do NOTHING to any ship, except a PT boat.

I think ships shouldn't take damage from anything smaller than 20-30mm rounds

Odd, I recall seeing a gun cam shot of fighters strafing and sinking an Axis DD. :headscratch:  Having hell trying to find that footage though...

Pappy Boyington did it with a hangover, down to just two machine guns, and taking a nap while RTB.

I've seen Torquila killing a cruiser with his 410.

I was in the 8 inch guns once and a 109 sunk the ship  :headscratch: I was sitting in the guns for a good 10 min waiting for the town to come in range before starting to fire on it and the ship was not hit by anything wile I was on it except the 109  :huh Could have been hit before I got on it but all the guns were up when I jumped in the 8 inchers.

Two 500kg bombs, 4 very large rockets, 2x20mm and 2x30mm all at the same time is a pretty withering amount of firepower.

I could have sworn I knocked down a cruiser with 2 500'rs a few years back.

These were 500 lb GP's via a Hurri 2C

I got the killing blow on a CV with a single AP round from a Panther once....pretty silly.

Well I can't argue with the facts, 2k will take it down. However you have to admit, in real life there is no way that would happen. I guess it's time for the "wish list". :D

I have hit the cruisers with the B25H cannon 4 & 5 times without sinking it. :cry

Thanks for the feedback all.

yeah well IRL lancasters wouldnt come in on the wave tops and toss 14 bombs at a CV and kill it EVER , but it happens all day in game.

I don't have the book with me right now, but a B29 destroyed a Japanese warship (destroyer size) by strafing the deck of the ship.  The gunners ignited some sort of ammunition storage.

According to the Trainer's website, a 75mm HE shell is approximately the equivalent of 156.2 pounds of damage.

maybe I've just been gettin lucky, I been sinkin destroyers with the sbd ordnance load. It's worth like 25 perks! Pretty sure an sbd carries less than a 110.

well with the 1600lb AP bomb it carries more than the 110 as far as pay load goes I killed a cruiser with a 1600lb AP bomb but I didn't even come close to hitting it, it still makes me wonder to this day :headscratch:

the 1600lb AP bomb of the SBD produces 1,968 lbs of damage. The 500kg bombs of the 110 are doing 2x1,100=2,200 lbs of damage.

It takes 1,563 lbs of damage to sink a DD or CA.

I organized a Spit IX mission once.  We ended up taking off with around 30 Spit IX's.  Needless to say we cleared the enemy fighter attack we were sweeping pretty quickly so everyone went and straffed and sank a nearby CV with nothing but .303's and Hispanos.

Our squad straffed down a CV with P40s during an FSO a few years ago. Caused a lot of grief on the message boards the next day. The butthurt was very satisfying to witness.

I've seen a single p-38 (not sure of the model) sink a 100% healthy cruiser AND cv with one pass each. Couldn't get good film because at the time gunship footage was buggy.

Once deacked a CV on a map, I forget what one but it had all the little islands, anyhow I flew B-17s around the CV shooting up planes trying to take off, quite humerous until we sank the boat (and I got shot down by PT boats before I could land my 7 or so kills?).

If nobody is manning the 5" or is a lousy shot, strafing down a cruiser isnt hard to do in a 110

The CV probably wasn't "100% healthy" if it was sunk by a P-38 in one pass.  A P-38 has the ordnance to be able to sink a cruiser in one pass but not a CV and especially not both on the same pass.

I'm the one who sunk that cruiser. Do it all the time. Specially when guys are staying in the 5" and trying to shoot us when we dogfight  :)  I never try to drop bombs, I would have to be above 100ft and 5 inchers would spot me. A few feet off the water, icon is hard to see and even harder from the cruiser. I take the big gun package and start shooting at 800yds out. Keep my finger on the trigger until it goes down.

That's why it is seared into my brain. When I clicked on the task group to enter a gun ship I clearly remember seeing every gun position and radar up on the cv group. it dove down, sank the cruiser, climbed out, dove back in, sank me and my carrier. It was years ago and I have no evidence, take it at what you will.

I also realize i'm calling myself out at how lousy of a shot I was and still am.  :o
