I am running windows 8, and apparently alt x is some new way to bring up the start menu. Thus, I cannot engage auto climb without a special assigned key. Does anyone else have this problem, and how did you solve it?
-
You can reassign the auto-speed (climb) command to another key combination like ctrl alt x or alt z.
-
alt x seemed to work most of the day today, but now it is start menu again. Anybody know enough about windows 8 to tell me how to disable this command function?
-
I also have windows 8 and havent had this problem :headscratch: go to control panel and then ease of access, to change sticky keys, I have them turned off. maybe this would help?
-
Is it possible you're hitting windows key / x instead?, as that's actually the shortcut for the win8 "start menu", am using win8 at the moment, and alt x does nothing on my machine (in windows at least)
-
Nope. Just did it right now, Alt-X brings up the start screen.

Is your keyboard / language set correctly then I wonder, as (from MS site)
Windows logo key +X
Open the Quick Link menu
Looks like this

Just checking we're talking about the same thing when we say start menu :)

Windows key+X brings up that. Alt+X brings up this:

I'd say there's something definitely wrong with your keyboard under windows, as getting the "tiles" menu on the win8 machines I have here is brought up by ctrl escape (have tested on 3 diff machines)
I also don't see alt-x mentioned here in the list of all keyboard shortcuts for win8

I think the earlier suggestions might be the best idea, map it to something else :(

I think your right. Might be time for a new keyboard. Like I said, this went away the other day, then came back.

How about washing your keyboard? Unless it's a $5 piece of excrement. I've heard about using a dishwasher, but that sounds quite rough. What I've done, is to remove all screws in the bottom, washing the plastic parts with mild dish washing detergent and a brush. If the three plastic sheets seem to be sticky from something sugary like lemonade, I'd rinse them with plain water and separate them with rolled pieces of paper until dry.

I'll just swap out keyboards when I get home. If the x and escape key are getting mixed up, there is no hope for it.

What's windows 8????
-
Logitech makes a 30$ washable keyboard, the K310
-
As a work around you could always use Shift X then use the I and K keys to set your speed/climb rate (usually between 150-175 mph depending on the plane you fly).

This is a very good tip :)

Well I switched keyboards, and that was not the problem. I contacted microsoft support, but they couldn't help me. Does anyone know how I can change command keys? At this point, alt+x does the same thing as ctrl+esc in windows 8.

this might work for you

Alt-X will bring up the Start Menu in my Win 8 system. I programmed my CH stick for autopilot directly from AH and it does not bring up the Start Menu. No problems playing the game at all. :aok

I know this is a Necro.
I have figured out your trouble.....
You are running an outside program to give windows 8 the windows 7 look and feel right?
Open up the program your using and checking the Hotkey settings, I just figured mine out and turned it right off.
<S>
Again sorry for necro :noid

You can disable the alt x menu in settings. I had problems with that too. Try setting it to classic mode.

What's windows 8????
Bloatware garbage.

Okay I figured it out. I brought up Start Menu 8 with alt+S keys, and in General Settings, Hotkey for Switch to Metro was Alt + X. I changed it to None and that fixed it. I downloaded windows 8.1 if that had anything to do with it.
Funny thing is I literally stumbled on this while using random command inputs. It was so simple it frustrates me.

I had the same problem but not until I'd been playing AH on windows 8 for about a week.
I changed my hotkeys and that fixed the issue. My google search for windows 8 alt x brought up this thread at the top of my results.
