Title: I shed a few tears today
Post by: rpm on September 02, 2013, 08:18:40 PM
For years Texas has had a front license plate law, but they screwed up and did not assess a penalty when they wrote the law. Police could stop you but all you got was a warning. If they actually wrote you a ticket, you could get it kicked out of court. I literally have a stack of warnings in my glovebox because my C-300 never had a front plate holder and I wasn't going to drill holes in the body. Besides it looks better without it. I'm pretty much on a first name basis with every traffic cop in the county now because of it.

Well today the new law kicked in and they made sure it has a $200 fine. I had tears in my eyes (OK, it was sweat because it was 110 in the shop) as I drilled 4 holes in my virgin front air dam and mounted a plate bracket. I know they are just waiting for me to roll into town without it. :cry

lol.   Up here only a solo plate is required.    No drilly, drill.    I would figure that a Benz would already have holes pre-drilled, being from the Continent of Front Plates that take 1/2 of the front bumper cover.

Hmm this is new to me. So in Texas its mandatory to have both a rear and front license plate? In Arkansas we just have to have our license plate on the rear. Every truck i've had came with a front mounted plate holder as well, but I use it for a "Go Hogs" plate.

This was the first car I've ever owned that didn't have a factory plate holder. It really bugged me to drill new holes.

If it's registered in Texas it has to have a Texas plate on the front. The real reason behind it is the toll road system reads your plate and mails you a bill kinda like a red light camera.

In California we also have both front and back. I have a ford explorer with no front plate mount I bought in south Carolina. I just took the plate and stuck it on the front dash to where you can see it out the windshield. No problems from the cops...

Technically that's not legal in Commiefornia. If they want to they can give you a ticket, and fyi a fix-it ticket has a $15 fine associated with it now plus cost of repairs.

Won't work here. The plate can not be covered by anything and that includes the windshield.

You know how many Cobra (AC style) owners are crying their beer today?  Very, very few of them have a front plate as there is no good place to put it and it can never be made to look good when you put it on there.

I wish they had made toll tags mandatory instead.

You don't have to drill holes in your bumper to display your front plate.

Any number of options out there for this.

I know its not legal, but I do it anyway. Im not going to drill holes into my car. Rather take the chance to be honest.
