Title: New Map
Post by: ONTOS on September 08, 2013, 03:38:09 PM
I've seen a Winter Map in this FSO and a Winter Map in A.v.A., so why not a winter map in main arena ? We have Winter skins for airplanes and tanks, so why not have a map to use them ? We did have a Winter Campaign in WW II.

$15 a month isn't enough for new maps, the players have to create them

get to work!

(oh did I mention that the terrain editor is a cumbersome, buggy POS?)

Gotta disagree with that statement. :salute

Well, I wouldn't call it buggy. Non intuitive maybe. Quite a learning curve for sure.

I would agree that it is not buggy, but it is very user unfriendly. Once you learn the "tricks" then its not too bad, but there is no way to really just pick it up and create.

-The mini map does not update for land changes.
-Understanding all the codes to insert the right item as there is no descriptors (just a string of text saying "Large Air Field" or something to that effect would help greatly on the learning curve.
-No way to zoom out long range.  Creating the terrain feels claustrophobic.
-Better navigation. Mouse pan, zoom & angel would make using the creator far easier.
-The brush sizes are no were big enough.

If I understand all the items in that -list correctly, then WISH GRANTED.  :D
Well, sort of. A list of the objects, including your large airfield, was posted in the terrain editor forum years ago.

As jimson said, it's a very step learning curve to get started. Frankly, it quickly eliminates all those who aren't willing to put in the time to do it right or collaborate with someone who knows what they're doing.

Ten minutes? Phussst LOL

I haven't tried it, but these sound like reasonable concerns, especially the "zoom to long range" one.

it's just a learning curve like the game,

I spent about week working on my MA map (10 hours a day) and got all the fields and land done,   it is the spawns / terrain / elevations that take time.

The fickle MA crowd will soon get bored of a flat pancake.

Zoom to long range has always been available.

I reposted the shape list today and added it to a sticky in the TE Forum so that it's easier to find. The list is six years old so there have been additions but I doubt you'll miss them. In all this time, no one has asked for an update lol. Just as well, I don't have the time anymore.

No. It would be hours long if it covered everything.
Even with the text base tutorials available, you'll need lots of experimentation or...
you'll need to seek advice from a terrain builder. Several have replied in this thread.

+1 coombz

I was doing some 3dsmax in my teens then solidworks at school but never could understand a single function of the map editor :P

Even if you spend the hundreds of hours required to create a MA map, I wish you luck to actually have it in the rotation.

Aces High is leader on the 15$ BYO game market :P

Haha! You mean hours on just part one xD

Especially if you take your time and explain yourself

There's no possible explanation for me.  :D

I just am.

what we really need to churn out some more maps  is a collection of guys who know how to use the TE  or at least have the skills to do certain things,

lets say coombzy learns how to lay down spawns and draw the roads leading to town and can now setup   1 spawn point,  he can then do 5 or so in the space of 2 hours,

sirnuke then learns how to paint a mountain with all of the required brushes,  snow , rock , rock grass, grass.  He spends 2 hours painting mountains.

wpeters learns how to do picture perfect coast lines and spends several hours finishing those,

everyone re-uploads the map once they do their little bit and log their progress.

This is the only way I can think of to deliver more maps without relying solely on the sanity and free time of one poor person.   The Terrain team have their hands full creating real world historical maps for the CM team and special events.   Including updating and adding stuff to existing maps.

I'll do the 'collect money' part as soon as you guys get a product. ..  8)
