Ok, so I haven't done much GV'ing since the big change, but if there's one thing I really miss it is the manual transmissions. I had a lot of fun the other night chasing tanks around and defending a base, but climbing hills was a nightmare. Unless there is a trick to it that no one has told me, I need my manual back :cry

Yes manual was better. However there is a trick to force the "automatic transmission" to stay at a particular gear reduction. I don't have the game open so I don't remember the name of the control, but it has something to do with incrementing the speed down once as the auto is in the process of shifting up. Someone else can probably describe it better.

Agree. I want manual tranny back.

we have had it for what 2 or 3 years? there's 1 key for manual and another for auto.

just take off your trousers and look down...wish granted. :rofl
you have to be familiar with the shift speeds and then you can get the transmission to stick to 1 gear while going up hill...assuming it's not a very steep climb.

Why?
The new system is superior in nearly every respect. Its certainly more realistic with how it affected a GV's climbing abilities, and how you can no longer truck along at 150mph down a hill.
Honestly, I suspect those that are wishing for the manual transmission are either hoping to abuse it again, or simply have not bothered to learn how to use the automatic system.

Sorry TA, but you can still climb a 45-degree hill, and can still go 150+ mph downhill (I exceeded 200 mph once this year). It varies depending on vehicle, but after the steepness increases past a certain point, the speed starts increasing unless you cut the engine and/or hit the brakes. As a general comment, manual was better, as it gave you more control, as in a car. I am sure of this, as I have had lots of experience with both in-game modes.
BTW, I am *not* complaining about the above. In particular, being able to climb unrealistically steep hills compensates for the unavoidably unrealistic (at the GV level) terrain. I.e., no roads, etc.

You hit the W key to sneak up on the max uphill speed before it up shifts. Which, in practice means you go too far and it up shifts meaning you have to slow down to get it to down shift and do the whole thing over again to sneak up not quit as much in speed and leave it there (at a lower speed than the manual transmission would have allowed you). Or you just ignore the problem until the constant down shifting and up shifting drives you crazy and you take a baseball bat to your monitor. At that point you can no longer play the game and the 75% of AH players who hate GV drivers are happy.
And the argument that GV drivers want to "cheat" by going downhill at 200 mph is useless as a) there is no advantage to going downhill at 200 mph and b) if the hill is steep enough you can still reach ludicrous speeds with the automatic transmission.
The discussion is moot as the manual transmission will never return. Also, the under damped "auto heading", which oscillates back and forth after every turn, is here to stay forever as well.

You obviously have never driven any kind of vehicle with a manual transmission. When climbing a hill, you're going to shift down instead of lugging all the way up a hill. The current system does not do that. Instead it fluctuates back and forth between two gears. I fail to see how anyone can abuse having a manual transmission.
As I mentioned, I have not done much gv'ing since the big update, but I slowly have gotten back into them. I've asked around, and no one can really tell me how to do what I describe with the automatics, but I am trying to learn. So, if you can help, please let me know.

My car is a manual, just by the way.
And you can do that now. Just hit the S key until it downshifts.
On the right side of the reticle in commander view, the number indicates the speed the tank will try to hold. When you floor it, you see it change to "F", for full. This means the tank will try to maintain its top speed, and will thus upshift when it reaches the set RPM's, regardless of the situation. This is why you're experiencing fluxuation in gears, as it will downshift after it slows, use the lower gear to build up speed, and then upshift again because the settings say its time to do so.
Right around 15-16mph seems to be the edge of a gear (in panzers, anyway), and is typically what I find myself climbing hills at.

Thank you for that advice! I won't be able to try it until this weekend. Like I said, I hope to get a little more practice in GVs soon.

-1 No
You can manual with the auto just learn to shift the gears, jeez

I'd do anything to have the manual transmission back. Or at least an option to run manual or auto like tracers on/off. The auto transmissions were a HUGE step backwards for the GV game.

Plus manual gave you better control of forwards and reverse. Currently there's a long pause between going forward and then in reverse and vice versa.
