It would add some interesting arena dynamics to make it possible for players to be able to deploy a temporary Forward Operating Base, or FOB. I would envision this as a special mission type, where some minimum number of players would roll a group of C-47s that would then fly to a non-base spot on the map and land together. Upon deploying their field cargo, the FOB would build over time into either a Vehicle base or airfield with limited capabilities. A marston-matt runway, tents instead of permanent buildings, open-air fuel and ammo dumps, and light AA would make up the field. The field would remain operational for a set amount of time (30-minutes, perhaps?), which could be extended by delivering additional field supplies; it would have only a limited selection of non-perked vehicles (if a V-base) or fighters/light attack planes (if an airbase). There would be no radar for these bases. If something is destroyed, it only rebuilds if more field supplies are delivered. In the case of a v-base, it would have non-alterable spawn points in each cardinal direction, each limited to only a few miles.
Yes, none of this would be simple to add to the game. I just think it would add an interesting dynamic to the game. Flame away!

no flames, very interesting though...

So lets think this through - perhaps a C-47 FOB cargo type that if you deploy it to a spot on a map (heck - airdrop ok) and then get a couple more drops at the same spot - it would create a small remote airfield for fighters/attack aircraft? With the special matted as described? Maybe it also appears with a couple of AAA support guns and a 10 mile radar?
I LIKE IT. I LIKE IT ALOT!

Sim-City meets Aces High.
There is a dynamic to this that would appeal to players more interested in the logistics of MA play. And the ability to NOE drop one of these in place next to an HQ would be priceless. Even allowing LVT to deliver this down shore from a target by a few miles as a backup against CV sinkers.
The unintended consequence would be the time and effort focus. It would generate a certain amount of combat in the getting it there stage in favor of the defending country. But, that would take away from the effort of your country expressing force into the two enemy countries to win the map by playing defense of the DZ to build an offensive jump point.
Once you build it you probably don't have anything added to your required percentage towards winning the map. Simply an hour or so spent putting up a non permanent structure that would require man power to defend at a disadvantage just so it stands as a pimple on the honor of that country's nose.
Weighed against the capture of a field that extends your countries territory, that's a lot of effort for nothing.
As a mechanism for SFO and AvA, there are historical precedence. But, in the MA, unless it has the same capabilities as the nearest enemy airfield or GV base. Who wants to play at a disadvantage in the MA? Look at how players for the last nine months have bailed on the knights to the two other countries just to be on the fun end of the nasty stick.

i dunno Bustr, even though it wouldn't make any difference in the way you're looking at things, it could make a difference in a fight for the overall war effort. the situation in the lwma tonight is a good example of how a temporary airfield could maybe swing the balance a little.
-
Bustr, I would argue that anything that generates tactical combat is a good thing, and this idea adds an operational element to arena play that could change things up considerably. While adding a FOB won't change the "win-calculus" of how many bases you hold (and shouldn't), it provides a way to dramatically alter the operational landscape, something I think is sorely needed to keep the arena play from becoming stale. Yes, it may take resources away from base capture, but it also takes them away from base defense.
I think there might have to be some additional logic in where FOBs can be inserted (must be x-distance from a friendly base, for instance). I'm also not sure whether it should have radar or not (most didn't during this time-frame), but should have a flash-warning distance similar to permanent bases.

I like the idea, Sabre. Buster is correct. Still, your idea appeals to me. :aok

Takes 3 x supply drops to get it set up? Has the life expectancy of a just spotted CV.
And it's something else to detract from air combat

rather than just make vague comments - can you explain your thoughts? If its a tactical drop it could be done covertly similar to dropping paratroopers. How would it be simir to a spotted CV?

How would it be similar to a spotted CV?
Actually, once spotted it would have less chance than a spotted CV, being comprised of
stationary permanently destroyable (non-regenerating) objects. Still interesting, though.

+1!
Under one condition, You would also have to drop a set of troops or two in adition to the "FOB supplies" to set the field up

When has dropping troops been done covertly with a big glowing red "P" over their nappers and spawn camping being a prerequisite of anyone who plays WOT. How was I vague? My statement was completely unambiguous. Similar to a spotted CV in as much as all those guys scuttling around with glaring icons means everyone will know what to hit, then you won't have time to set up your Hesco's :old:

I would love to have this option for one reason only, to hear the whine of so many people once they figure out there's trees in the runway.
and I'll let somebody else explain why.

Idea: If implemented, FOBs should not be able to be taken, only destroyed.
-
Buckshot: Absolutely agree, and was my intent when I suggested the idea.
Semp: Definitely a possibility, so you'd have to be careful where you dropped the supplies. In fact, I'd suggest the goons would have to land and taxi to the center of where the FOB would deploy. Even then, there's certainly the possibility that you may end up with a clump of trees or a hedgerow in the middle of your runway. Not necessarily a problem, as you could always land nearby and then taxi onto the marston mat before exiting your A/C (to avoid a "ditch"). I'd also suggest that the arena code would need to have some parameters defined on the terrain conditions necessary to successfully deploy your FOB, such as the relative flatness required.
-
That's getting a bit complicated now, Sabre.

Perhaps, Arlo. Just trying to consider all the angles. By making people land and taxi to where you want the FOB built, versus just dropping supplies by parachute, you at least insure that the terrain at that spot is not totally unsuitable. On the other hand, this mod could be coded such that it checks the basic terrain parameters for the spot you pick for your FOB. If the spot is too far outside the allowable parameters, the code could simply block the attempt to unload the FOB cargo. This would require players to at least consider the suitability of a particular location before setting down there, but still have a back-up check by the code before deploying (and wasting the trip). If the code says "no", the player simply lifts off and looks for another spot nearby that appears better suited. This of course makes the code a little more complex, but not the gameplay.
