It's 8am in the UK and 5am EST (daylight savings still?).
The latest AvA AI mission should last until Noon UK time unless someone goes in and kills them all hehe. Good luck with that!
Enjoy.

The current 4 hour staged mission has been restarted in the AvA.
For those who don't know, the AI planes are flying a circuit with bombers and escorts. Choose your side and plane and up to intercept the enemy. They put up a good fight that'll leave you in the tower laughing. I'm not up on all the tips for fighting them, but I'm assured you can beat them in a 1 v 2 but look out for the second pair!
-
Here a a few things I've noticed about the AI. I'd say I'm just an average AH pilot and I have a terrible time with the buffs and the fighters. I was even shot down by a group of AI Ju87s using their gunners ;)
I have noticed that the AI fighters suffer from the very worst case of target fixation I have ever seen. I entered a 1 v 2*AI fight and both AI stayed on the original target despite the fact that occasionally I was even closer to them than he was. At one point I was in front of one of the AI's guns and he ignored me and flew past to get to his original target. I was able to easily shoot down both because of their terrible target fixation.
Other things I've noticed: they seem immune to base ack and they never take collision damage despite the fact that they head-on attack a lot. I guess because the AI is perfect all collisions must be the players fault so the player gets assigned all the damage.
-
We usually set field ack at 25% lethality. The AI bomber defensive guns are pretty deadly. We could possibly lower the lethality of all bomber defensive guns, but that would of course affect anyone flying bombers as well.
The only thing we can adjust in regard to AI behavior is the distance at which they will engage. Either 1500 or 3000 yards.

Here's what I saw. I was German flying BF109G2.
The AI Yak7 is faster and climbs better than you. The 109 is supposed to be faster at all altitudes and climbs much faster at all altitudes. The Yak7 can and will run you down from half a sector away. The enemy has perfect information and perfect coordination.
The AI are prone to hitting the ground when low. If you are at treetop level and agile, the AI will plow into the ground often. I got a few proxy kills doing this.
The Friendly AI bombers don't shoot back in their own defense. The last mission I flew tight in the bomber group just to watch how they acted. They flew finger four formation which was nice. I half expected them to scatter when attacked but they stayed together. When the enemy attacked, the bombers just made nice targets. The enemy ignored me (as they should) but the friendly bombers ignore the attackers!
-
It may be that there is a bug with certain bombers not firing defensive guns, I can assure you some do and they are deadly.
-
I'll be in there being killed by them tonight! :joystick:

Another observation re AI. I was part of a fighter Staged Mission. We came upon the bombers / escorts as per design but every single one of the AI fighters on my side went for the escorts. Not one followed me to attack the bombers (which were now stripped of all fighter escort). One enemy AI fighter did trail me and continued to try to ping me from 800 out. He finally disengaged* for no apparent reason (ran out of ammo?).
*(from about 1K back, i.e. he didn't fall behind to the 1.5K ignore distance)
-
what happened to the terrain mission? it wasnt there?
-
Had to do some work on it

*(from about 1K back, i.e. he didn't fall behind to the 1.5K ignore distance)
The structured mission we tested yesterday had some attack segments with 3K engage distance. The AI patrols we enable throughout the day are usually set at 1.5K since it's only you against AI, and I don't want them to be quite as aggressive. Patrols are flying now in AvA.

I'm beginning to get the hang of dealing with the AI. Here are some thoughts:
AI Bombers:
Attack head on; a brief burst into the bomber will often kill it. (Bombers seem to die much faster, like they give up easily for some reason.) After the HO use slashing attacks only. With a slashing attack you can do some damage yet take very few hits. If you attack from the rear it is like a switch is turned on and you will be shredded in a second. It is truly night and day.
AI Fighters:
As Blooz mentioned they are not very good on the deck. Not only are they likely to auger, but even if they don't they don't seem to fire on you if you are very very low. You can outlive them until a friendly AI comes around, or the enemy AI just gets distracted or bored, or, and I've had this happen a couple of times, they actually overshoot you and end up in front of your guns. In open air at altitude, however, it is nearly impossible to get them off your six.
As I mentioned before they have terrible target fixation so I often try to extend briefly from the fight then come back while the AI enemy is fixated on another AI.
AI fighters never take collision damage even when it's their fault. Several times, on the deck, I've had them overtake me and hit me from behind. They fly on undamaged while I take all the collision damage.

We had some fun tonight, had 5 or 6 guys on, so we stopped the AI patrols and ran the staged mission several times.
-
I recieved a PM from the Bot AirForce Commander:
Your puny human pilots are wimps! Can't you send me someone who is an actual challenge?
-
wow what a..........richard!!!

Looks like he is calling you out

Forgot to mention some bugs (tell me if you're tired of hearing from me, I'll stop ;) ).
A Staged Mission ended abruptly and I was put in tower with my engine noise still going. Even getting out of the arena didn't stop the engine noise. Had to exit the entire program.
Died in a Staged Mission. Unassigned myself. Tried to up free flight and it repeatedly put me to the side of the runway at an enemy field (A1 at the time) with the ack firing at me.

Forgot to answer. No it's fine. The more info the better.

In these AI patrol missions, you need to get within 1500 for the AI to peel off and engage you, but I found it difficult to even get that close because the bombers tore me up.
I moved the fighters back about 200 yards from the bombers so that it might be easier to engage them without exposing yourself to the bomber guns.

Gave it a spin tonight, AI pilots aren't push overs :O. AI's I ran into had their wingman tactics down pretty well and are crack shots. Had a blast, will be back again

I did a run or 2 tonight in AvA I have a Question are the AI's Planes supposed to have Tracer's off? I dove in on the Buff's after I saw the 38's dive off to defend but as soon as that happened I was in the Tower after doing a Top End 3 to 9 attack and was sent to the Tower........... My Question is are the AI planes Tracer free?
I like AvA when I am there but this no tracer stuff will keep me out of there

I don't know I seem to see AI tracers. The buffs will kill you so quick you might miss the tracers. In any case, we can't do a thing about whatever the AI tracer settings are.

Ahhhhhh I will give it another try tomorrow night and see
