Title: Bomber drones
Post by: Lone82 on September 22, 2013, 12:51:34 PM
Please fix or Explain to me why the bomber drones can't stay with the lead...... I like to bomb at very low speed so i can hit more targets but when i get to the minumum speed i can with out losing alt the drones fall out of the sky.... If I can maintain low speed and level why the hell can't they? Same with turns.... if I can make a hard bank to come around to target, why cant they make the same banking manuever?

Because they ain't the fine pilot you are and struggle to react to your radical tactics. You are the lead, fly within their limitations or don't use formations.

Why is the first comment always "I have no clue how to answer this so let me say something sarcastic & non-explanatory."

Actually, it was quite explanatory. You asked for an explanation. You received one.
Was that not the one you wanted? Think about it. You're asking why your drones
aren't more perfect than formation bomber pilots in real life may have been. If you
were a lead slinging your plane around radically and flying the edge of the stall for
drops all the time you wouldn't be a lead pilot for long.

At what point did I say i was "slinging my plane around radically???"

When you wondered why your drones can't keep up with you.

If anything, the drone leash needs to be shortened - especially in vertical maneuvers.  Bombers should not do immelmans in formation.

The problem is you are simulating flying in formation. You are flying one plane and two other guys are flying the other planes (drones). They can not read your mind nor can they react instantly to any move you make. On top of that they are not as courageous as you and so do not wish to put their lives are risk performing such dangerous maneuvers. This "why" the formations fly as they do.

While this IS a game HTC leans towards the "more realistic" side of things and so inhibit some of the more "gamey" stuff... such as bomber formations doing acrobatics.

I felt betrayed when my drone wingmen refused to follow my HE-111 into the scissors with that K4.  :cry

If a formation turns rapidly the outer element must increase speed rapidly to keep up and the inner element should slow down considerably. That could be one issue at slow and high speeds or large bank angles. If drones are losing altitude while straight and level I imagine they are trying to prevent stalling by keeping a larger speed increment. I could be wrong but sometimes my drones have gone past me on final approach to landing when my speed drops lower than planned.

I note the  "leash" differs from ac to ac. You can virtually dog fight a Boston and still hold onto drones (although they are unable to follow your course) try this on large ac and you lose drones.

If you go back to when formations were added to AH the leash was set to limit the manoeuvrability of different formations. Indeed the first implementation was such that using full throttle in straight flight would lose drones (eventually).

From this it seems that there is quite easy (HTC) access to drone "leash" set up on a plane by plane basis.

I support the idea of formations being limited in manoeuvrability as we have it now with one exception.

It does seem to me that my drone pilots have lost the use of their lower legs and have no capacity for rudder control.

:airplane: If you restrict your turns to "standard rate" turns, you will never lose a drone. Bombers are clumsy and by their design, they are not supposed to be handled like a fighter!

Thank you, Earl. Precisely.  :salute

Unless they are "LancStukas". :devil

I was going to ask the exact opposite question. I chased a formation of Arados around the other day in a 262. the guys barrel rolled the formation about 5 times and never lost a drone. The drone AI routine is drones to having them Warp back to position so I had to be extremely cautious not to collide. This caused me to lay quite far back which put in danger of getting 20mm'ed. The "Crash into my drones, or get shot" defense was quite effective for a long time. If the bandit hadn't been deep in out territory he would have escaped as fighter support probably would have saved him, as we were low and slow when I finally got him, having started at 25K.

I could not believe that those drones stayed with him during all those gyrations.
