It sucks that the Army is disbanding such a
Historic and Decorated Combat Brigade.

that does suck...then again the army has way too many battalions, divisions, brigades, regiments, etc. seems like every time someone makes general or someone says they need more soldiers a new command is created.
-
:salute how do you know what is way too many?

So... demobilize one of those newer superfluous brigades and preserve the one with history?

if the one with the history fulfills the mission that the newer superflous one is supposed to...hell yeah. history and tradition can really affect troop morale.

When I was with the 101st from '99 to '04, we didn't have a 4th brigade, we only had three. This one didn't exist anymore. Sounds like they are just going down to pre-war numbers (in the division). As long as they don't get rid of my 3rd Brigade Rakkasans, I'm ok with it. :)

A lot of the "New" ones have the most time in combat during the last 10 years.....
Example being all of 10th Mountain which has been activated/ deactivated many times throughout history.
-
like ranger said, its trimming the force back to pre-war numbers. It sucks either way.

I assume most of are tracking the enormous cuts DoD has been mandated to implement - even without Sequestor. Odierno has stated many ones in the last seven months what it means to the Army active and reserve forces. They are forced too make some very hard decisions. It is unfortunate and I personally think our government is making a serious mistake.

The drawdown is always cyclic after a period of war. We downsized too after the first gulf war. andI agree with you as well Ammo in it being a mistake.

Oh how the Band of Brothers label gets old. E/ 506 was not the entire 101st or even the entire 506th. The history doesn't go away either. The WW2 101st was deactivated by November 45. A mini series does not make them more important than any other unit just because of name recognition.
I'd suggest the list of historic and inactive units out there is a long one including units from all the services.

Were they ended up called Band of Brothers because of the HBO series or were they known as that in WWII?
For we in it shall be remembr'd,
we few, we happy few, we band of brothers
for he that sheds his blood with me today shall be my brother
be he ne'er so vile this day shall gentle his condition
and gentleman in England now abed
shall think themselves accursed they were not here
and hold their manhood cheap, while any speaks
that fought with us, upon St. Crispin's Day.

Don Malarkey was a mortarman with the 101st. He put out an awesome audio book about his exploits with the 101st. I highly suggest it. I listened to his whole story on a drive from Kentucky to Texas. I'll find an amazon link here somewhere.

As it happens, I'm visiting France right now. I write this somewhere in Brittany. Tomorrow we plan to drive to Normandy and visit Omaha beach. A long standing dream of mine. Disbanded or not. I don't think anyone can erase what those men did that day and later right up to the present.
We can only salute them.
