Ok I have to ask.....why did the put a blue tarp over the rear of the bomb?
-
Couldn't have been that dangerous with all those spectators.

The pictures were taken after the bomb had been defused.
-
But we still don't know the secret of the blue tarp.

was taken.
Must be an odd feeling to know you parked on a 4,000lbs bomb all that time... :uhoh

was discovered by analyzing old aerial photographs
Is this something that is done regularly? What was the tip off that something might be there?

Is this something that is done regularly?
In many regions it is. In some, (Lower Saxony comes to my mind), it was stopped for financial reasons.
What was the tip off that something might be there?
My guess: An impact crater too small for an exploded bomb. Or something like that.

This thread is a good place to plug a book I've plugged before: [urlhttp://www.amazon.com/Aftermath-Remnants-Landmines-Warfare-The-Devastating/dp/067975153X][/url] you can get it from your library. Also if you get a chance to see this: http://www.bombhunters.com/ (http://www.bombhunters.com/) I recommend.

Yep! It is SOP to survey WWII arial photos before beginning a construction project. In the past two years or so, the main train station here in Stuttgart has been under construction. Several unexplored bombs have been found.
About 5 years ago, a bomb was found right here on Patch Barracks (Kurmaker Kaserne).

I rather think that cookie was British, yes, old boy.
"We're flying Flying Fortresses at thirty thousand feet,
we're flying Flying Fortresses at thirty thousand feet.
We've bags of point-five ammo
and a teeny-weeny bomb..."
:airplane:
:old:
-
Haha :aok
I guess the USAAF didn't need 4000 lb bombs - it was more effective with it's accurate daytime bombing with smaller munitions :D

Its a outrage :old:

How many bombs did the British drop over German occupied territory (for comparison)?

For the record, I was just stirring the pot for fun. We really do need a good <sarcasm> emoticon.

I sure would like to read how you came to that conclusion. It would be a hoot.

I don't have a numbers breakdown, just tonnage.
Comparison of Effort and Effectiveness of Bomber Command Aircraft
| Total sorties | Total failed | Bomb load | Losses : sorties |
Type | flown | to return | delivered (tons) | ratio per cent |
Sterling | 18,440 | 606 | 27,821 | 3.81 |
Blenheim | 12,214 | 443 | 3,028 | 3.62 |
Ventura | 997 | 38 | 726 | 3.60 |
Wellington | 47,409 | 1,332 | 41,823 | 2.80 |
Boston | 1,609 | 40 | 952 | 2.48 |
Halifax | 82,773 | 1,830 | 224,207 | 2.28 |
Lancaster | 156,192 | 3,340 | 608,612 | 2.13 |
Mosquito | 39,795 | 254 | 26,867 | 0.63 |
The table is from page 324 of Mosquito by Sharp and Bowyer and is thus listed by loss rate from highest to lowest.

Here's what I have on unexploded bombs from the Allies;

Davis makes the point that, taken together, the Allies were flying one bomber in five empty across the Reich.

It is true that France and Britain started WWII, but Germany provoked it by invading a country allied with Britain.

Most likely it's the end they took off to diffuse bomb. You know construction workers smoke and throw their butts into the hole they dig. Exposed explosive material is quite flammable. :D

It is the language you are most likely to understand.
I'm always thinking of my target audience. :rock

That's a stretch.

Thanks for the replies fellaz. Must be a bit of an undertaking when you start digging around over there.
