"This morning at 09:08 GMT Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Mars Orbiter Mission, also known as Mangalyaan, the country’s first spacecraft destined for Mars. Over the next 300 days, it will slingshot around Earth and travel to Mars to begin its science mission. If all goes well, Mangalyann (Hindi for “Mars craft”) should arrive around September 24, 2014 and ISRO will become the fourth space program to reach the red planet; only the United States, Europe, and the Soviet Union have achieved this so far."

Before too long, Mars is going to have a lot of space debris in orbit. It'll be much harder to track than the 20,000+ objects we have floating around Earth.

Could the money been better invested in helping those in abject poverty than toddling off in the footsteps of many who have already fruitlessly done this before? :confused:

They won't need to track them. Unlike back in the space race days, today the resulting orbit of every piece of equipment is calculated beforehand. Only an accident up there is going to create significant debris that we don't know the orbit of.

India will get a lot of research into communication systems out of this. The mission costs India $72 million, so it cost each Indian $0.05. By comparison the Microsoft yearly R&D budget in around $10 billion. Yeah, that's billion with a "B".
As for your comment on hunting: Yeah, I do enjoy that, and I don't really care whether or not you commend it. Just be happy I'm not hunting you! :)

Regarding a successful mission, they will be out of luck if the computer reports an onboard system failure and needs to call India for Help Desk support. :devil

It was only a matter of time after perfecting ground transportation. The mission should arrive at Mars by no later than June of 2115.

Looked good in the news but India has no reason to go to mars. That was a test of an ICBM system or a new spy satellite put into orbit disguised as space exploration.

Abjectly inaccurate, G. The United States spends a lot of money and resources constantly tracking and cataloging objects in Earth orbit. That's because there are many factors that work to subtly alter an object's orbit vector over time, and even the best computer models can't cope with them all. Even in geosynchronous orbit, where near-Earth effects like atmospheric drag are minimal, there's enough other influences that affect the orbit that predictions devolve into little more than rough guesses, over time. Not to mention the errors that result from the ride into space itself. You're talking about trying to place objects the size of a sedan or even a bus into a precise location hundreds, thousands, or ten-thousands of miles away, with a precise velocity vector, using several hundred thousands of pounds of force. This, where even a tiny percent difference in actual burn duration and/or thrust can result in being off the mark by a hundred kilometers or more in position and many kph in velocity. Plus, some objects are so small that they can not be tracked with any certainty. Even when they can be tracked by terrestrial sensors, the position accuracy can be off by differences measured in kilometers. Finally, while the nation launching an object into space may know with some degree of certainty where they intended to send it, this information is not always shared with the international community.

When has it been otherwise? Every space program (including the USA's and Soviet's) evolved as an off-shoot of a weapons development program (most advances in aviation, too). However, by the same token a lot of beneficial things came out of these programs, and it makes sense for a major power pursuing an independent capability to access interplanetary space. Even if it's been done before by others, if your country wishes to be a major player in the future, you've to to develop and demonstrate the necessary skills to do the intermediate steps. If you're a developing country that wishes to build an air force, you do so in the manner Israel did. You initially procure modern combat aircraft from other countries, learn from them, begin by first modifying them, then eventually learn how to build your own (starting with more basic aircraft, before trying to build a 5th gen, multi-role fighter).

Technically correct, but its a common error in the way of thinking. The money was spent in india, so it cycled back into the economy. Especially since this is thinking money and not a lot of wasted raw materials, almost 100% of it comes back to the public. Along the way, technology advanced and people were trained, which will now contribute in other branches of the economy. You take tax from the people and pay it back to them, but gained something extra along the way - it is almost like magic.
Investments in "pointless" science tend to repay themselves handsomely, but sometimes in unexpected ways. Economists and bureaucrats often hate that because they cannot properly figure this into their calculations and accounting.

When I was in NDE school (nondestructive examination), one of my instructors was an Indian PhD who helped develop maneuvering thrusters for India's space program in 1972.
