I remember someone referencing a book where they mentioned those things, one of the guys that tested it said something to the effect of being in it was like being in hell. I do not find that hard to believe.

A P-38 pilot in the PTO took a ride in a one of those pods on a F-5 (the type of Lightning pictured in the photos in this thread) and afterwards didn't have good things to say. He wanted to go to the States and find the guy that designed the pods and make him fly in one so he'd know what it felt like to ride in Hell.

+1 For putting a mechanic in there with a roll of duct tape. He can fix all those oil, radiator, and pilot leaks. Tape that wing back on or flap his hand around when you're short an aileron. Worse comes to worse you can drop him on a Wirbee to un-fix it.
