In the greatest virtual contest of all time a small US team is facing off against a Russian behemoth of EA proportions in a race to build the greatest WW2 combat Sim ever developed...

In response to the seeming graphics gap that developed between our US team and their Russian competitors Hitech had this to say for reporters...
I think we should be forthright gracious and magnanimous about this and say... well the Russian guys they just beat the pants off us that's all. And there is no sense in kidding ourselves about that but now that the WW2 Combat Sim Age has begun I think there is gonna be plenty of work for everybody.
that was the public comments but Fester's HTC news corespondents did get some more candid comments behind the scenes from the HTC crew...

I'm tired of being forthright gracious and magnanimous. I'm tired of these stupid questions about updates from the press. I'm tired of budget constraints telling us what we can and can't do. I'm tired of everyone that says we are not COADer's. Most of all I'm sick and tired of being second to those... those darned Russians! Now I think its about time we closed that gap and get that terrain system up there!
The team could be seen walking down the hall to upload their latest terrain breakthrough here...

another case of Fester tries crack...

no just a bit of humor. if your not familiar with the story of The Right Stuff perhaps this post will not make sense. :)
the inspiration for this little skit was based on HTC being a small US based company with most of its competitors being based in Russia.
HTC's post of a new terrain system is fantastic news and it inspired this post.
call it a bit of fan mail for HTC :)
everyone likes a scrappy underdog battling from a disadvantage and winning the day.

I think it's the crack.
There is no competition. I play (played) Aces High. I would have liked to play DCS Warthog but my system could never run it.
But I guess we all have our own little worlds and fantasies.
Carry on.

One of the greatest movies evah about the greatest time in American History

There is no competition. I play (played) Aces High.
The competition I speak of is war thunder and its online FSO mini battle setup.
I played it for a good many months but got burned out on its limited variety non persistent gameplay and stopped playing.
If this was not a competitor to HTC's product why did so many people there know who I was even after a short time playing?
The primary reason the players that migrated there gave for their departure from AH to WT was they could no longer stomach the graphics aspects such as the terrain even though they preferred AH gameplay and AH community.
To quote one former AH player turned WT regular... "if they would just fix the horrible ground." -Pand
HTC has been at this since 1999 and they are clearly highly motivated to improve their excellent product to be competitive in the graphics department with other offerings from Russian companies that have saturated the market.
Graphics will not hold interest of players alone for more than 6 months I would think but they are very necessary to get people to look in the window and open the door and download the game to try it. they are also a good method of keeping the game interesting to long term players who want the graphics of the competition in the game they prefer to play.
just my 2 cents.
I think HTC is doing a wonderful job with this terrain engine overhaul effort and such passion for improving Aces High is a good omen and signal for many sitting on the fence looking for a suitable playground that will suspend their disbelief and entertain them.
make no mistake the Russian game studios are making a no holds bared attempt to corner this niche market with free to play mechanics and pretty graphics and they are doing so in an environment of an economy flush with prosperity from oil revenues where energy is cheap costs of everything are lower than the US. etc etc not to mention the avaiable player base in there hemisphere is actually larger than their US base.
of course many american players are going to stick with HTC because they are the home team but the overseas contingent of HTC's player base seems to be attending the russian developers arenas from what I saw when I was a player there as well.
again this is just speculation and observation and its just my opinion.
HTC's progress is exciting and I can't wait to see more of these exciting developments because I think such things turn the tide in their favor to not just survive in this niche industry but thrive and dominate it.
S! HTC keep up the great work!

lol
thx semp
but the only addiction I have ever indulged has been these online aircombat games.
I rarely even drink alcohol and find narcotics of any type to be idiotic. In the rare occasion I do drink I observe FAA flight rules of 8 hrs from bottle to throttle even for motor vehicle operation. :)
flying is a much more powerful drug in my opinion than anything you could ever ingest or inject yourself with because it puts you in an environment that humans have longed to experience for a Milena.
even in these virtual games that aspect of them is a compelling attraction even though the flying is only a simulation.

Fester I hope your campaign to bring about change is more successful than mine has ever been.
-
I just want to be inspired by Aces High again and this new development is inspiring to me.

I agree, it is wonderful news that HTC are updating the graphics.
Let us try to visualise what it is like to put countless hours into developing some software that, as a global market, is evolving at such a rate that by the time a project is finished it is close to outdated already. We all have felt the same pressure when we shell out on a new system that by the time it has shipped to us is no longer cutting edge. It is a constant battle to stay current and often unrewarding. I applaud the efforts of hitech and his minions to continue to push our enjoyment forward despite our general lack of gratitude.
-
I am glad they're updating. but it serves no purpose if they do and we dont. I just traded 3 monitors for single one with a higher resolution and it looks like they updated the graphics 10 times. I can see planes pulling up in front of me with such detail that I see them giving me the finger :D.

I don't have to visualize it. I just spent 500+ hours on a main arena terrain that this update makes obsolete and in need of likely hundreds of hours more work to update lol.
last time I built a main arena this happened. (Ozkansas in AH1)
its somthing of a tradition that every time I build a main arena HTC updates the terrain engine and makes the terrain obsolete :)
-
No kidding, I can only imagine the effort involved. Making a simple terrain with three airfields took enough of my time.
-
Fester is the new Floatsup? :lol
-
The Russkies are Spam in a can. But, if we don't see a Korea arena HTC is a bunch of pudknockers.
-
Please update it with snow and desert maps! Far to long with no verity in maps on this game. :old:
