I never even knew the original movie existed until 2 days ago when I was scrolling thru NetFlix. Now Im thinking about staying up late and going to the night feature of "Catching Fire" which opens tonight, and, Im going to buy the books.
What a great story.

Saw the first one. Wasn't that impressed to be honest.

Have you been living in a cave? Because it's been kind of hard to escape the hype machine. That's been a sizable chunk of the entertainment news the last couple years.
Then again, at least it means seeing a lot of:

Got to be honest, I've never ACTUALLY seen anything she's been in (never got around to seeing First Class, no interest in the Hunger Games. Days of Future Past will probably be the first thing I'll see her in), but A) she's gorgeous, and B) it's refreshing to hear someone who's honest and behaves like a REAL person coming out of Hollywood for a change.

Yes. His posts reminds me of a "whatmighthavebeen" had my mother dropped me on my head as a baby.
No, seriously, visions of dystopian futures have a greater meaning then sheer entertainment or a pair of nice tits. Especially since some form of dystopia is where we are heading. One where a all powerful state holds all the power. History/future is all the same VHS tape on re-wind.
It might be war, economic meltdown, terror, or even a natural disaster. But it will happen, and Ive always liked stories of little people who stepped up to tyranny to be very entertaining. Katniss Everdeen has guts. I salute her even tho its only a movie.

:lol i think Rich missed the whole soviet union iron curtain thing...

Yeah, Lol, having served from '77 to '81 I missed the entire thing. Middle East, Europe, SAC bases in the states...what Cold War?
My comments were about America. I couldnt give a crap about what the North Koreans do to each other.

Next you'll post about this new Twilight movie you've discovered, and what an excellent and original vampire story it is.

Hunger games:
A post apocoliptic Gladitorial society that reminds me of a first gen Star Trek episode.

Silver Linings Playbook was a surprise for me, I normally don't enjoy films like that, but it's one of my favorites for the year. If you want to see Lawrence perform in something decent, give it a whirl, I can see why she got the Oscar nod for it.
Hunger games is strange to me, in that the books are written in a very strange format, present person tense. It hurts my head to think about it, much less read it.
Oh yes, and Gsholz for the flawless victory +2.

I like the books, but the movie disappointed me. I will still see 'em though.

3&1/2 star movie. Saw it today. Best movie Ive seen all year.
-
My daughter left these books on my kindle when she borrowed it once and I read them. I then saw the 1st movie on netflix. I liked it. Very faithful to the book. I'll go see the new one at some point.

The current one sucks big time compared to the first. I don't even know why people made such a big deal about the first movie, but the second gets a big calloused Ranger thumbs down from me.
-
I agree Ranger. Misses dragged me to the theatre to see this second instalment. While I enjoyed spending the evening with her the film was uninspired. I enjoyed the first two books but found the third to have died a slow death. I doubt the third film will be much better.
and +3 for Scholz winning the internet

I agree Mech... I'll DL the second movie when it's available but won't make a special effort to go see it. The third book left me very very flat. One and two were 'okay' in my opinion but I wouldn't tell a friend 'dude you HAVE to read this book'

hahaha :) Never heard of the honest trailers. Those were pretty funny.

I took the girls to see the second one with the girls and we really liked it as well as the first one. Worth the money to see it in the theater I thought.

I just finished reading the three books. There is a deeper meaning to what the author S. Collins is trying to say in her books that the movies might have missed. The movies portray a dystopic, futuristic sci-fi movie where the oppressed citizenry are rebelling over the all controlling Dictatorship. But when you read the books you see they are even more about what is happening to the young people caught up in the entire thing and you see the parallels between future "then" and "now".
The citizens of the Capitol have given up any right to govern their own lives, trading it for all the material things they could want. Along with the narcotic effect of "sport" or "games". Could it be "us" she is talking about, pumping up credit cards and watching in fascination on out TVs as the new TV wars show the missiles going right down the chimney chutes to blow up a building full of people? Or the shots of the drones or C-130s wiping out people almost casually? Or even computer war games when you can run up as big a body count as you want. We've become very good at safely portraying entertaining, gratuitous violence.
And the effects on the main characters? As Katniss is turned into a cold blooded killer and the look on her face at the end of "On Fire"? She could just as easily be the faces of our kids when they join the military and are turned into efficient killers. Like mine has, Like I was. Like many of you were.
Look Ive been wearing a uniform since I was 18yo and for sure I think its honorable and its necessary. But there is a price you pay when exposed to that kind of violence. Either as assailant, as victim, or even as just an onlooker. It effects everyone, even a nurse who has to deal with the effects after. Ive seen experienced, seasoned, professionals seize up at, or after, violent encounters. Not even able to talk for a few minutes. Those things stay with you, most of all for the young.
Thats what the author is saying, at least I think she is. These kids we send into war zones will never be the same after and sure as hell we had better have a good reason to do so. The only reason older vets were never treated for PTSD is because nobody had come up with a word for it yet.
The books are fascinating. And more then a little scarey.
