Neither

Get something made by Motorola.  I've been using them for years and they work in places that samsungs and i phones don't.

Bought a Samsung Xcovery to my younger kid. Total POS. Not going to touch Samsung again. After listening to the kid complain long enough I decided to upgrade my wifes iPhone and give the kid her old iPhone. Now they're both happy again.

IMO the top Androids are the LG G2 and the Xperia Z1

I've got the Xperia Z1 and its pretty much a beast on every aspect, including build quality, which is important when compared to an Iphone.

Its interesting to see that apple's market share is pretty different on US soil, still around 50%, while Android is dominant on the rest of the planet.

Fashion victims?

HTC makes some good phones...Motorola too. Stay away from iphones unless you want to feel like you're in 1st grade...no customizing it.

Xcover 2 without contract is about 250€, and you compare it to 500€+ phones.

It runs android which is same to all the models. And it's a total pile of excrement even if you forget all the security problems.

Every summer, my family all gets together with all of our spouses and kids at a house on a lake in Northern Wisconsin.  Where the house is located is just outside of the Verizon coverage area, and within in the AT&T coverage area.

My sister and her husband both have iPhones and AT&T service.  Neither of their phones work, even though they are supposedly within the coverage.  It will take my sister's iphone a couple hours to send a simple text message.

My oldest daughter has a Samsung, I forget which model (she has had several of them, because they apparently break easily)...  No service for her up there either.

My wife and I both have Motorola phones, and even though we have Verizon service (which we are actually not even in a Verizon zone while we are there, if you look at the coverage map), our phones work just like they do here at home.  Flawlessly.

I actually take great joy in pointing out to my daughter (usually while she is struggling to text her boyfriend on her crap Samsung phone) that I am able to send texts with ease, make and receive phone calls normally, and surf the internet with no problems on my Motorola phone.  My favorite thing is to call my wife (who is in the next room) and carry on a conversation for a few minutes, hang up, and ask my daughter if her text has sent yet.   :rofl

For my purposes, I have yet to see a phone out perform my motorola.

:rofl    My Galaxy S3 was submerged for a 1/2 hour and still works flawlessly.   I have dropped it off of a couple of roofs with only a Seidio Surface case and no screen protector.    If "better quality" = the crappiest batteries and battery life, then Apple has that market cornered.   Not to mention, I have 300+ albums on my 32GB microSD and still have 3GB for pictures.   Plus, I don't have to bother with iTunes.   Drag and drop.

Jimmy C, I would look into the GalaxyS4 or the LG G2 and the Xperia Z1, as SirNuke suggested.   Those are the only three I would look at with money involved.

Iphone isn't any better than any other phone maker. It has never been.

Apple admittedly makes good phones, though their computer OS is clearly intended for the special ed of the computing world. But what they do is sell the brand, and the do it very well. Notice what they did with the headphones; they changed the shape and called it revolutionary, despite the fact that there is virtually no benefits in sound quality to all but the cheapest of headphones, and not any more comfortable than a decent pair of in-ear speakers.

Now compare it to Nokia, and Iphone looks like the cheap diecast car compared to a real Shelby Mustang. I swear to god Nokias should be used as armor on MBT's.

The only smartphone I've ever damaged the screen on through dropping was my girlfriend's Nokia Lumia (granted the circumstances were extraneous and on that same road trip it survived a fall into a New Hampshire mountain stream), although I've never had the chance to break the screen on the iPhones my friends have had, which seem to come from the factory pre-shattered, case or no case.
The Lumia has a great camera though

My S3's screen was bullet proof, even though I never put a case on it the phone was structurally sound, though it did start to develop some issues with, for example, the lock button.
I have an S4 now that I've put a case on, I'm pretty pleased with it.

Really? My friends decided to take my old Nokia and literally throw it (and the guy is now going to school on a scholarship for his pitching) down the high school bleachers last year. Superficial damage only.

Then again, the Lumia does have a solid glass front now, so who knows.

My brother got the SIII, and He's sent it through the wash no less than 4 times now. Only issue is the microphone doesn't work now, unless on speakerphone.

On a Samsung S3 now, since dropping my S2 down the toilet. It did work mostly again but it was time for an upgrade anyway. Very happy with it. Wouldn't even consider changing to an iphone which seem to break screens if you look crooked at them! My Samsung S2 eventually cracked it's screen after I dropped it from the cockpit to the hangar floor, hangar floors are hard! But a cheap cover solves all that.

The Samsungs feel like mini tablets to the point I rarely crank up my PC anymore to check something on the net.

One problem with the S3 lately was a botched upgrade. A lot of complaints about it ruining battery life and start up issues. Luckily I hadn't tried to upgrade and will wait not for the fix.

Next one I think will be the S5!

Try and see if you can get Juicedefender Plus from Google Play.    I now charge my battery at night and have ample battery throughout the day.

I'd go with an S4.  My Droid RAZR is made by Motorola but powered by android.  Its the best phone I've ever had. Just replaced the battery a while ago after a year or so of heavy usage runs perfect.  Oh yeah and you can root androids :).

I love my iphone 4s, not a huge fan of the new iOS update, but at least it is a consistent look/feel across the board.  I got my iphone after hearing my sister complain when her 4th android phone in a row died and needed replacing.  Very little fiddling around with an iphone.  It works well, lots of apps for it, and it just doesn't need to be geeked at before it is a vital tool in your life.

Even with my reservations about the new iOS (I have excellent eyesight and I still had to turn on a bunch of the "accessibility" features to make it easy to read and see indicator icons), if I had to buy a new phone today I'd get a 32 or 64GB iphone 5s, no question about it.  The user interface is very polished, and the hardware is very good.  I'm particularly impressed with some of the new camera features that come standard with the new phone.  Also, this time around apple is throwing in for free a few of their best mobile apps including word processing and other iworks apps.

They may be a bit more expensive but the ease of use, lack of having to fiddle with it or jailbreak/hack it before it is useful, plentiful apps, and quality hardware makes it worth it to me.  I wouldn't ever take out a loan to buy a phone or buy one on credit, but if you have the cash then an iphone would probably not be a bad choice.

I have a S4 right now and it is absolutely flawless. It has all the bells and whistles without all the bloatware like iTunes requires. I would recommend a good case (ie Otterbox), the S4 is pretty fragile.

Have an older I-phone 4 (no s) and works flawless for me. My wife got the S3 (I took her I-phone) She has had problems where the phone just randomly shuts off and turns back on. We took it back to Verizon but these days the tech support at the stores are snot nosed kids who pretend to know something. all they did was erase some of her apps by mistake and said oops. Phone is still f'ed.

       Leaving Verizon soon maybe At&t?

I would make that decision based on coverage areas.  My sister and her husband use AT&T because they live in the Chicago area and the coverage is good there.  Where I live, AT&T coverage blows, but Verizon's coverage is good.  You'll get the snot nosed idiot problem with all of the major carriers, to be honest.

Cool thanks. I live in NJ usa and during the slight earthquake we had here a couple years ago the Verizon network was so overloaded no one could make contact but my buddies at&t phone did. So much for needing it in an emergency.

Did the same thing.. long time Blackberry user.. got caught up in the marketing and switched to an Andriod (don't remember which one). I quickly got tired of the lock ups and lack of decent apps. Couple of years ago picked up an iPad for work stuff (tons of tech manuals, apps and spreadsheet stuff). After using it for a year or so when it came time to replace the frustrating Driod phone I switched to the iPhone. Mind you I use my phone and iPad for 95% business and wanted the rock solid stability. I've passed the age of wanting to tinker and tweak my phone. I want one that does what I need, easy to use and doesn't lock up on me. iPhone is it. I've found that the iOS system is easy to use. Not sure why some would say it's dumb downed, seems to me it's just the opposite, it's very well engineered and thought out so that user doesn't need to worry about doing a 1000 tweaks to get it to run right.

The Apple "eco system" has some drawbacks (cost being the main one) but for us, having two daughters, we've been buying music through iTunes for years and have started buying movies through it also. Also, when one person downloads an app it can show up on everyone's phone or iPads. One purchase and it's on 5 different devices. Can't beat that. We use one main Apple ID for the music, movies and apps. We each also have a separate ID for email, messaging, cloud backups and whatnot. When we added in AppleTvs it made the sharing thing that much easier. She has a Apple TV at her house at school, we have one at the main TV down stairs. Her and her roomates are always watching something on the Apple Tv.

My other kid decided she wanted a S4 since her boyfriend has one. She sold her iPhone to pay for the S4. 2 weeks later she told me it was a mistake and was going to switch back when she saved up the money for a new iPhone. Her reason was it's such a pain to find the correct version of whatever app she wants. She said she sometimes downloads 3 or 4 version of an app before she finds one that doesn't have some sort of security warning about installing it.  Her words not mine. The boyfriend plans on doing the same.

Sister called me asking what I liked about the iphone.. I gave a few reasons, stable, easy to use and always works. She went to her Verizon store.. talked to them and came out with the new S4. A couple of weeks later she was over for dinner, we got to talking about the phones. We messed around with each others phones. I liked a few things about the S4 but would not want to switch. She on the other hand is now waiting until January when her husbands contract is up.. she's going to give him the S4 and pick up a iPhone 5s. He doesn't mind since he just uses his phone as a phone. His words "he don't internet".

Swapped my iPhone 4 for a new HTC Windows 8 Phone.

Its not that its terribly bad, but I miss my iPhone.  I regret switching.

I have an iPhone 5s(through work), a Motorola Photon as a back-up, and a Samsung Galaxy S4 as my personal phone...  They are all good..  I guess it depends on what type of used you are...?
iPhone take better pictures....  iPhones have better recording capabilities(records at a much higher bit rate than Android phones).   I have recorded live shows, presentations, etc. and they more than listenable(pretty good actually)..  Try recording a live band with an Android phone (up close) and you'll get over-driven static that will not be listenable..  The video and pictures will be better..  People can claim all they want about Android phones have 1080p video..  iPhone takes much smoother, fluid, better looking video..  if you are using it as a social tool, it's great...

However, I prefer Android phones..  My Galaxy S4 in particular..  It just has more usability..  I can do much more with it..  It is faster..  I don't need proprietary software or cables to import and export files..  I can network it(connect to wifi-network and transfer files)..  I can customize it..  Apps for Android are much more plentiful..  If you are one who doesn't like to tinker, get an iPhone..  If you like to truly "own" your phone, get an Android..  I would go with Samsung...  Motorola has broken too many promises..  They put out a phone and stop updating it 6 months later..  My poor Photon(great phone) is stuck at Gingerbread after they promised to update it to JellyBean... :furious

that's where the xperia Z1 steps up, bringing build quality and a superior camera to the android OS

A bit tardy to the party but I am very happy with my s3. Android is great apps out the ying yang. Great ones for tracking offroad runs awesome free mp3 downloader and ringtone maker all free all great. As to htc I had one before thos and new going in to it I was getting a windows phone so you think as a long time windows user on pc I would have known better. Constant crashes and oddities just like windows. But sturdy phone.
For my s3 I went with the otterbox defender and now it feels like a phone in my hands and takes a beating. Good camera too. Enjoy it.

I'm due to change phones next month. Can you try an experiment for me? I use my phone as a tethered modem for my table top 'puter. The current phone, a samsung stratosphere is pretty unreliable. I had heard that that particular modle had some software and hardware issues so I am not certain the performance is due to the model phone or not. Could you tether yours for an experiment and see hos it performs? You just use the USB charging cable to connect to the 'puter instead of the charger module.

I dropped Hughesnet for internet last summer and use the phone exclusively now as we are still traveling full time.

I have a Motorola Droid Razr M...have had 2 of them they are an awesome phone I love it...I'm hell on phones and in the water business they tend to not last long...the screen is some super screen that doesn't scratch but I still use a screen protector and it can get wet with me with no problems (haven't submerged it though) gets good signal and the 4g works well...battery is internal can't remove it or nothing but it stays charged a long time sometimes don't have to charge it for 2 1/2 days...IMO its a good phone....had a S3 biggest piece of junk I've ever had
