Just curious; I'm back after a long time away. Was just wondering who is left here that was in the AH Beta or first couple of Tours?
-
<raises hand> :salute
Good to hear from you.
-
I watched my son play the beta before moving to Intel. Does that count?
-
Kinda here. Account is active, but I rarely find the time to log in.
-
Here! Toad, it's been a while. (Vruth)
-
Since tour 13, How are ya Toad? :salute
-
Loong time ago...
:D
-
Here, since Beta tour 1
-
Ah Toad, good to see you haven't been squished on the road. :)
Been here since Beta 2, however, the old B17 is pretty much retired now.
-
If recall correctly I messed with beta then played Warbirds for a short time them came back when the game was up and running.
-
Hiya John, really long time! How's the health thing going?
Was just thinking about you last week. Earl1937 was talking about his wife's passing and flying
a PT-19. I was going to bring up your family, but decided to let it be. He never got to fly the PT-26
but would have liked to.

I really think that Aces High has endured since 1999 says a lot about how correct HTC's business model is to survive in this niche industry of WW2 simming.
even the Russians with their big industry backers look at HTC with jealousy and say even publicly... "they have been succeeding for over a decade while our products for this WW2 simulation has success measured in months or a year and if the company that owns us is not satisfied with the profit they pull the plug and the project dies."

I was here
-
I've been here since tour 11 as MDJOE
Welcome back Toad!

You probably were still in diapers when beta was around.
ack-ack

I started my AH career in tour 14... not quite beta...

I watched my father play, and began when I was 8 on his account. . .10 years ago if that counts.

I pwned your father.
God I feel old.
-
I played around in Beta, also played around in WB, but lost my way into EQ, and returned to AH after 10 years away. Unfortunately, I've forgotten more folks than I remember, but that's the same outside of the game too. I can't remember people from high school or college.
-
Been at it since 1999. :)

Still here and semi active :old:
Getting a kick looking at these old names and brings back alot of good memories.

I remember a good few of those on Nath's list but I didn't start playing till 2003, which makes me a perpetual noob :rock
speaking of old timers, who remembers Taki?

2009 here

I started in Jan of '08. Soon after the T34/85 and SdKfz 251 were added.

Hey Glenn! I'm still kicking' and glad to see you are too! My health is stable and that's about all I ask for. How you doing?
The -26 went back to Canada. Dad is 93 and just got too old to fly it anymore. The other two are in KC but sold out of the family. The guy I sold to still lets me in the front seat whenever I ask. If Earl ever went to KC, I'm sure I could hook him up there.
-
Good to see so many old timers still here. Thanks for the welcome back and I hope to see ya up!
The game still has that draw, doesn't it? It is THE affordable Walter Mitty experience for many of us that grew up building all those Monogram and Revell WW2 airplane kits. I realized a while ago I'd never get to own these aircraft; this is as close as I'm going to get.
So, since Cit pointed it out, <S> to Dale/Doug/Skuzzy/all the HTC folks for keeping this thing alive.

I remember him. He left for other things. Came back briefly and then disappeared again.

Tour 15 for me, but a lot of H2H before that (I was broke for quite a while back then)
Good to see you Toad, <S>

Holy moly the names in that thread bring back memories. Had to believe it's been almost 14 years.

Flew the game that predated the beta version of AH. Fighter OPPS on AOL, Air Warrior, and Warbirds.
-
anyone here from CK beta ? what year was that 95 ?
-
Tour 27 here. So many gone who don't play anymore and are missed in game by myself. Duedel, Overlag, MANDOBLE, AX, Goth, PaleRdr, PK1, 0lDemon, 4XTCH, MajIssue, Anton, Souless, Animal (from 13th TAS), MrWulf, Swoop, Rebel (TwoStep) and much more.

I recall many of those names, Masherbrum.

Souless isn't Soulyss? Haha I thought they were the same.
Who was the Spanish guy that was a huge 190-A5 pilot? He was always calling folks "stupido" on the common channel. Pretty good stick too. I miss that guy.
Lest we forget Drex, Lazs, AKCurly, AKMoe, Daddog, funkedup; I can't list them all. I miss those guys.

I miss Swoop's weekly contributions to the forum. Merlin01 (Beta user) who got me started on this game in tour 49, JeepnAZ, BLAMMO, Dragoon,...
-
Souless flew as Tequilla previously...and is not the same as Soulyss.
-
I remember others like Brady, Soviet, Fariz's infamous mishuns, Pugg (who we all thought was dead but was not), saxman, tank and other warbird pilots who came over when Dale and Doug left and started Aces High. Those were the days... :)
-
A bit later on from that time, Balsy, Mathman, Grits, Jamx, just a few more names from the 2003 era that I miss

2009 here

Can't remember exactly when I started here, or whether it was Beta, but I remember that for a while I was alternating between Aces High and Air Warrior, so it was obviously before the plug was pulled on AW..... 12 years ago today.... :cry
Earliest tour I can see myself listed is Tour 14, March 2001, but I am sure I played occasionally before then.
LOL played AH much longer than I ever played AW, but I still miss it. :old:
-
Been around on and off since pre ah and beta was Mols back then I think all's I remember I flew them B38s with Alan Murdr Tkor and few others from the Good Ol 479th.
Welcome back Toad

Tour 22 for me just as AW pulled the plug; 32 minutes, 4 sorties, 1 landed, 3 deaths, 0 kills.
Welcome back Toad.

Been on a break for awhile... still check in here now and then though. Been thinking about firing back up again.

C'mon, Tumor. We have your Hog fueled, armed and on the ready line for you. :D

Toad wassup???!!! Remember the every other Weds, nite furball club we tried to establish?
Good ta cya back. I don't show up in the MA very often. Usually FSO or Scenarios now.
-
AH Beta was fine. Flight model was way different and much more challenging compared to FM in AH now.
There were already players dedicated to particular planes like Fishu (FW190A8), Hristo (BF109G10), Torque (F4U1C), Visconti (C205), Fariz (SpitIX), Leonid (LA5FN) to name the few.
At first it was two-country war between Rooks and Bishops. The Knight land was deserted at the beginning. Despite the game was free to play there were less gaming the game and more good fights then nowdays. Developers played in main arena quite often (HiTech, Natedog, Superfly) and despite it they were bringing new planes into the game much quicker at that time.
Everybody (the developers and the players) were very enthusiastic about the development of AH and it's future.
Now it looks like both parties are tired from what they are doing....
-
I wish we could get Daddog back here. Maybe a P-38 mission. Or the 332nd missing him would do it! <S> Sir!
-
AH Beta was fine. Flight model was way different and much more challenging compared to FM in AH now.
That was due to inaccuracies, not because the FM was made easier as a game concession. I recall in was Lazs who kept pushing on it and HTC reached the same conclusion, that turns were bleeding too much E, making BnZ aircraft more dominant and easier than they ought to have been as compared to the slower, more agile aircraft.
-
I believe Karnak is correct. I remember in Beta and even shortly after that if you tried to pull some of the G's we do now, especially at low speed and alt, you would stall and end up in the dirt by comparison. I remember the brewhaha over this, as guys who flew like Lazs(FM2/other turning planes) were at a massive, massive disadvantage if they didn't kill their target in the first turn or so. The planes sure handled much more difficulty in beta, one way or the other, most people who didn't fly then would be really shocked at the difference.
Toad was the person who got me into my first real squadron. I had flown with JG2 in beta, but it was maxed out at 32 pilots and then some, and was sort of chaos. The 13th tas flew a regular aircraft (P51) and had guys on every night. Lots of guys, I remember learning to fly the P51 with them back then and having a dozen wingman on with me nearly every night, and we were a very small squad back then, that was very hard to get invited into. Toad, Rude, Animal, Oz..., so many others I can't remember off the top of my head kept me in the game when I was pretty much finished with it, and that's kept me around the bbs and the game other than a few spans of being away working.
-
Great memories, Gman. Those were great times indeed. Hard to believe how personally close you can get to people in this game. I went and visited Sax and Beemer up in the Great White North. I was with OzKansas when the pancreatic cancer closed his eyes for the last time.
HTC created far more than a computer game.
-
I remember the FM in Beta being a big change from the years of playing AW4W RR then AW FR.
When I came back several years ago, the FM seemed much nicer. No idea on the realism, as I'm not a pilot, but it was definitely more enjoyable than what I recall when I firsted tried it in the 90's.
-
I was there, and also arranged/CM'd what I believe was the first AH organized scenario, a Battle of Britain event. As I recall, we had about 16 to 20 participants, evenly split between Bf-109s and Spitfires. Are whole squadron, "The Buccaneers" came over to AH from Warbirds. One of our squadies, "Gonzo", was in the closed beta (or Alpha??), and talked us into participating in the open beta. It was awesome to be on the ground floor of something that has endured. :salute

It affected only stick jerkers. The max AoA was respectively lesser for all planes. The main thing was to learn how to perform agile maneuvering via accurate and gentle stick movements. The people who learned it (like Mitsu for example) did miracles in dogfights.

We know that any dogfight depends more on pilot skill than a plane performance. With old flight model it depended even more on pilot skill. Sure there were people who did not want to learn but blame FM instead.
But who knows, may be in real life BnZ planes were actually more dominant (if flown with skills) to TnB planes.

It affected planes that used maneuverability more than those that used speed because it reduced the usefulness of their strongest trait.

Yes, and they are in AH now as well, just not as dominant as they were before the change. As has been made abundantly clear by my posts here, I favor the Mossie VI and I assure you the slow, turny planes are not much threat unless paired with something fast to make me bleed E out so the turny thing can catch me.
To argue that the early flight model was better is to argue that making turns bleed E unrealistically was better.
-

Stats do not prove your point though
You can see in Beta tours 1,2,3 that some planes were better then other but nothing shows abnormal domination of BnZ planes.

Doesn't mean the behavior of the aircraft was realistic.
I prefer greater accuracy. You seem to prefer harder even at the expense of accuracy.

It is not as simple as that.
HiTech and Pyro had years of FM development for WarBirds plus (correct me if I'm wrong) HiTech got some hours of real practice flying P-51.
That makes me think that FM in AH Beta was not a blunder but an attempt to represent the handling/behavior of a real plane as close as possible. As for data accuracy it affected all planes respectively, so it was not that big deal if it took 2-3 seconds more for ALL the planes to make a sustained turn.
-
anyone here from CK beta ? what year was that 95 ?
yeah that's where I come from, the free CK/warbirds beta in 1995.. after it went live, I completely ditched the genre and got heavy into MS flight simulator until 2006..

edit... will start a new thread for this topic instead of hijacking this one :)

I played the beta of Confirmed Kill (HiTech's first flight sim). Does that count?

I still remember W/B 2.77 I think as the most fun.

The O'Club was so much fun back in the day. I would've paid a subscription fee just for that. Remember Airhead?
-
Air is still around on another board where some old AW/WB/AH folks migrated.
-
I'm still here! Played on Day 1. It's hard to remember the exact date, but I think it was around Sept. 6 1999. I could be off a day or two. I was originally "AlgyFT". I closed my account for about a month in the mid 2000's, came back and changed my handle to "Biggles2". I have a collection of about 90 Biggles books that I bought when I lived at RAF Bentwaters in England, and that's where I got the names Algy and Biggles.
Just prior to AH I flew EAW on Kali, as well as Net Duel, and a WW1 game that folded (I can't remember the name of it--not RB2, but it was very popular, help me out). They folded right when they were getting ready to release a new MMO called BOB (Battle of Britain). I also enjoyed Fighter Ace during the period when there just four fields.

Thanks, Frodo! Good to see you still around, too. A couple of years ago I exchanged emails with kbman. He was kicking around the idea of coming back, but I don't think made the move. Too bad.

Biggles…those Biggles books….are they for kids or an adult read? I had never heard of them until you just mentioned them.

Thanks, Arlo, for that. I consider Biggles books to be "young adult' books, say ages 8 through 16, although they're interesting reads for adults, too, especially those interested in flying.

There is alcohol in them there shakes.

I can't even remember the price or the tour I started, I do remember the Chog and one of the spitfires being the only aircraft being really flown, Think I tried it for a month or so, then left - not very happy with the plane sets or being ho'd all day long by Chogs.
I do know I went back to Falcon 4 until 2002 or so then back to Aces.
I do remember Fester being ranked top 5 every damn hour, ironically he didn't fly the Chog or Spit/La7 then, it was something else I cant remember.

Wow, It's been a long time here.. When Dale and Company fired up Beta, We ( Daddog, Docdog, Ghosth, Harppa and the rest of the 332nd Flying Mongrels ) downloaded Aces High on Daddog's suggestion.. The very first month that Aces High went public, Daddog said that he was moving the squad to Aces High and all that wanted to were welcome to come along... There isn't many of us left that were the original one's from the 332nd. There are yours truly, Harppa and vaderr..
I've been here a long time and have watched this sim get better and it continually gets better and better.... I'm not going anywhere, Its a great sim and alot of fun to play.. Yeah-Yeah... :rock
As I recall, It used to be $3.00 an hour to play,,, My wife was serious Wife-Ack back when she paid the bills... LOL :) :x
I need a beer to put out the fire,my tail feather's are still smokin from you guy's.....
:salute
...Tee... :aok
-
I got a lot of help from Ghosth and Ozark when I first started, will always be thankful to them for that.
-
I'm in! :)
-
Which beta?
You mean 'Confirmed Kill' when it was free?
Or 'Warbirds' when a monthly bill could approach $200?
Or when AH was free?
I was known as mess, then messer when you could have as many as 6 characters in your handle.
regards,
Airman T. E. Shaw R.A.F.

I flew the beta. Had a great time. I have been reformed since those days. I used to stay up til 3am on a regular basis, and get up and go to work at 6:30. I will be 45 this week. The 3 little kids running around my house in those days have all grown up. My youngest one graduates high school this year. Those days are long gone. I do miss you guys though.
I have probably laughed the hardest in my life while playing aces high. Shooting various people down and seeing the reaction on the common channel. My wife thought I was nuts. As the years go by, I often think of what happened to my squaddies. I have forgotten some of their real names. I wish there was some way to look them up.
-
hblair you old dawg...what's keepin ya from comin back? :salute

Aztec, Ammo, Kilz, Frodo, We had some good times guys. The way it is now, theres no way I'd have time to get back into aces high. Plus, I think I mighta had a problem with it. My wife was just telling me that she hid my joystick one time and I got real upset lol. I actually don't remember that. I do remember flying way too much. How has the game changed in the last 8 or so years? Are the arenas different? How many people are in the arena on an average night? Is warbirds still around?

Dig out the joystick for 2 weeks and come find out! :devil There is someone with the handle Berserker playing again, although I don't know if it is the same Berserker that used to play.

I got to thinking of you guys today. I noticed my old Hoffman simpeds and MS Joystick under my desk here at the shop. They've been under there for 8 years lol. Don't have the heart to throw them out. I might actually try coming back for a short period of time. Rust wouldn't be the word. I may have to fly under some alias like "gunman26" (remember him?) lol or something. We shall see gentlemen, we shall see...

Just as good as can be! Hope everything is well with you and you better be fully recovered from that 2014 event!
-
Ammo, have you been in Enterprise Alabama the whole time? I didn't know you were in my neck of the woods.
-
Just moved to Enterprise last June from a ten year stint in Germany. We are pleased to be here! I grew up south of Montgomery.
-
Good to hear your doing ok HB, and your marriage survived Aces High.... Those where crazy intense nights of gaming till 3 and then getting to work by 6 for me.. What a group the Assasins where lol.
-
Wow, Hblah, Pongo, and now Drex - who's next Leviathan? Hope you guys give it a whirl again for a couple/few months, be fun flying with the Assassins and BKs again.
-
Played Beta and still here...though not on line as much as I like. Kids, family, marriage, life, all get in the way... :airplane:

Pongo!! What's up ol buddy? How's everything in the great white north?
Sounds like fun Gman.

PropNut
-
I am! Flew on the first day of the open beta, early September 1999, and never flew EAW, FA, FD or Warbirds again!
-
Wow been awhile now, hard to find time to play. Had some medical issues too, but lives :) maybe it is time to download and start again.
Atleas I still remember the names :)
-
:salute FLossy
Could you pretty please put that AW ( rip ) vid on youtube?
I remember flying with you in AW.
:airplane:
-
I'll sneak in and raise my hand. I haven't flown, let alone upgraded my PC to handle anything beyond 2007. I miss gaming in general. Maybe I'll build something in the next few months and give this a shot again. I seriously cannot believe it's been, what, 16 or 17 years since first downloading Aces High. Jebus! I joined a few months after the original Beta... Jan/Feb 2000 ish? Flew Air Warrior a few years prior to AH... on the C team, of course.
Nice to see some familiar names though!
-
nevermind :lol
-
Flossy, I miss the old Krait's program for AW to change the environment. Is Spiffy still with us?

Still here ... not as involved. :aok Hey Cit

Good to see / hear from all of you who are not currently playing!
Biggles, dude, I too was thinking my first flight in the original Aces High Beta was back in September 1999, but recently noticed one of those little
Aces High "Did you know" hints / tips that pop up while the game loads what ever Arena you pick say: " Did you know that Aces High went live, October 1999 "
Was messing with my memory.... LOL
My maiden voyage that day, had hitech, pyro, NB, Lonz, nomde and a few others I can't remember clearly.... someone had already grabbed TC for their gameid in the beta, so I was TequilaC for all of the beta
When HTC went pay to play LIVE, I used DamnedTC until they flushed the stale accounts (where accounts were inactive) and was able to get my gameid TC .... I really just called HTC to get it, heh
Good to see names posting on the BBS that was here in the beginning, now you really need to login and check it out online
~§~ & cheers

Well, anyone who played AH that many years ago is entitled to a "senior moment", eh? The only thing I AM sure about is it was day one of the open beta. I still miss some of the early maps, like the one that had a pizza and a beer sitting on top of a plateau...always got a chuckle flying that one. BTW, back then I was "AlgyFT".
-
WOW...
Is BigWeek still up and running??? Did a lot of time in there back in the day.

Yup, although most of the posters have gravitated to a Facebook page.

Is it called 'BigWeek?'
-
I'm wondering how many of us old-timers had different names? I started off with Brandor on Beta-1, then to Vruth for a while, and finally...well... Fork.
-
I was always "Brooke" -- because of not knowing what a "handle" was back in 1988 when I tried out Air Warrior, I just picked my first name.
-
Holy Necro thread!
December of 2013 and it rises again!
-
I still remember I was pretty happy in the beta.think it was one of my 20 first lucky kill in a fu4c. citabria called me a dweeb and it took me 1 week to understand that it was not a salute :)hahahaha
Do I remember wrong that the aircraft handling was pretty difficult last 3 months before it went no beta ?
-
Just curious; I'm back after a long time away. Was just wondering who is left here that was in the AH Beta or first couple of Tours?
I was in Beta. I set up what may be the first special event, a Battle of Britain fight, using 109s vs. Spits (not historically accurate, of course, since we only had one, mid-war variant of each). It was in the MA (which is to say, the only) arena. Don't remember who won. Our Warbirds squadron, the Buccaneers, moved en masse to the AH beta. :salute
-
Toad...of Warbirds Toad? Like WAY WAY back when?
-
Yeah, even way backer than that...AW ToadPS...WB Toad...AH Toad.
How you doing Dobs?
Funny how this genre has stuck with us old timers.
-
Doing well my friend...made the jump a few months ago and I'm kicking myself for waiting:)
Hope to catch ya in the air!
<S>!
-
Dobs, Dawger and the bunch have fit in well here.
-
Toad...of Warbirds Toad? Like WAY WAY back when?
I was -vlcn- in the CK beta, and -vlkn- in Warbirds. I thought you'd been here longer dobs?
-
Good to see you posting here. Hope life has been kind to you and your family. Been quite some time since we crossed paths.

Naw...probably going on 5 months now...

Anyone here who played RB on TSN? Not trying to hijack this, just curious. How about, simguild's Flying Circus?
-
Ye gods. Lets see.
I started in AW. Then moved to Confirmed Kill (the original beta), then to Warbirds, then to Aces High, AH II.
Been inactive now for as long as most of the people playing have been here. :-(
Had to quit flying when my (very young) daughter said something about me playing "that damn game". Realized I needed to take a break.
Now they are in college and eventually, I'll be back.
Ouch

I believe I started flying beta in the summer of 99 , I remember when HT finally put guns in the B17 loads of fun.
-
Flew in AW from 1995. Went to wwiionline when they killed off AW then went to Fighter Ace before coming here.

I played a little WW2OL while still here, with 3rd Panzer/dinkers group.
-
I was there. Good to see ya Toad - hope your health is holding up! Last time we talked you were looking to get a piece of artwork done for your Dad. How's he doing?
-
Hey RedDg, long time.
My health is really pretty good. I can still follow a Labrador through the pheasant fields all day long with no problem. As long as I can do that, I figure my health is just fine. ;)
My Dad, who briefly posted here as Panther, died 19 months ago. He only made it about three weeks after my Mom died. They are both together in Arlington now. They both did pretty well right up to the end though. We should all be so lucky.
-
My condolences to you, Toad, and best regards to you and your family. <S>
-
I'm truly sorry Toad. I enjoyed the stories you told about him <S>
-
Thank you, gentlemen.
He was quite a man. I have yet to meet anyone as honest or anyone possessing more integrity. I struggle every day trying to live up to his standards.
Here is a picture taken about 1951 when he was 31 years old. He had just logged more hours in the B-25 than anyone else in the USAF. He was #1, thus the finger in the air.
I don't know if he still holds that record or not.

I remember the Beta fondly. Some of the best gaming hours I ever had.
It felt like stepping foot into undiscovered country. There were occasional glitches but fixes and improvements were coming at a furious pace. Nothing but great promise. It was all new and pilots from other games were pouring in like the Gathering from Highlander. ;)
It's easy to forget how revolutionary HTC flat rate was back then. Everyone else was hourly.
