I have Vista Ultimate 64bit.
-
Are you having a problem you need to fix?
-
Also what kind of specs does your computer have? If its weak and just runs Vista it will certainly choke on either Win7 or 8

I5 3570K
ASUS P8Z77PRO
16G Corsair Vengence
EVGA GTX760
750PSU
Vista 64
and a Googliphonic stereo with the Moon rock needle :D

No, Win7 and especially Win8 are lighter OSes than Vista.
-
Win 7 will be an improvement

Of course he is. He is running Vista. :)
I'd go with Windows 7 64 bit.
-
If the system is running fine I won't replace the OS unless you want to re-install anyway. If you can get Win7 for a good price - why not. I'd avoid Win8 at all cost.
Just make sure your new OS supports your printer/scanner (or other exotic) hardware properly.
-
Hasta la Vista ;)
Win7 64 will upgrade itself from Vista, without damaging your files. Not sure about the win8 though, never had that OS.

Upgrades are often problematic and cause system instability. Best option is always to perform a clean install instead.

As far as hardware is concerned, Win 7 has slightly lower requirements than Win 8.

put win8 on an old dual core amd athlon system with only 2gb of ram and see how well it outperforms anything...

well xmas is near and i think i might be able to squeeze W7-64 from the relations.
along with a nu 1T drive.

true benchmarks have proven win8 to outperform win7. which reminds me of back in highschool when I dated a girl "way above my pay grade". she was hot and I mean really hot, but she was also annoying as hell. everything turned into a hassle with her. I dumped her and never looked back.

Yes some benchmarks have proven win 8 are lighter on the extra's. However if you don't have any issues, and you just think your going to get better performance with Win 8 you would be wrong.
I get better performance with Win XP then win 8. Windows always adds more features, which most PC's cant even use.

Well, you have that buttkicker puter whats in your sig, yet youre using XP?

On some newer titles such as Battlefield 4 using Win8 can have significant advantages. With Win7 you have to use 'core unpark' patches etc. to get it smooth since it can't properly use multiple cores on it.
In BF4s case Win7 stutters on the same hardware and Win8 does not. Pretty significant to me.
-
XP cannot run anything newer than directx 9c. If youre running games using dx10, 10.1, 11, 11.1 codes, you definiately want a win7 or win8. An 11 years old OS is certainly out of date.
Following that logic, the highest performance OS would be the DOS, with its small size direct access to the hardware. ;)

Sure and plenty of personal experiences show that it doesnt. I'd go with 7, tho its true ideally 8.1 does bench mark better.

Given that Win8 is aimed for both desktops and tablets your comment is pretty peculiar :D

wow they can fit win8 in a tablet? why does it take so much more disc space in a desktop?

Perhaps because Win8 can manage its hardware requirements according to the detected environment. Also Win8 requires the same or less disk space compared to Win7.
You guys need to get your facts straight before spewing the alarmist fud. http://superuser.com/questions/463183/windows-8-disk-space-usage-vs-windows-7

Out of the box benchmarks are one thing. The truth is, it does not take a lot of effort to make Windows 7 much, much faster than Windows 8.

The only problem is that you keep flashing this over and over but refuse to tell which are the magical and easy steps to make Windows7 boot to desktop in 9 seconds without using SSDs. I'm sure many of us would be delighted to hear.

LOL so you don't understand the way the app store works and the requirements it places for the EULA. Fine. Just as in Apples app store they have the possibility to remove malicious applications after the release date if the app contains a hidden malware or the author updates it in a malicious way.
What exactly is the 'scary' scenario for you with the 'kill switch' and what do you think MS would gain from erasing your pr0n? :D You can always dual boot to linux if MS scares you.

I do not want the responsibility, for the potential nightmares people could create if they made one error in what I would say to do. Every Windows computer is different and has a different set of requirements. What works for me may work for most people, but if one person got burned by a recommendation I made, then I would incur that liability. I chose not to have to deal with that.
If I can figure it out, then anyone else can also figure it out.

I have nothing to add except a rant. We bought a new laptop for my wife last Christmas for editing videos and, dreading dealing with its only available operating system, Windows 8, we didn't even unpack it until the day before yesterday. After playing with Windows 8 (and now 8.1) for a couple of days I can safely say that I am glad that there isn't one of those big shredders that tree surgeons use accessible because I would have throw this Win8 laptop into it. I despise Windows 8 (and 8.1). I despise the way it is supposed to work and I've already run into many problems and bugs where it doesn't work. For example, I was in Metro and did something that forced the Desktop up. There was an obvious dialog window with a white box asking for input. The rest of the window? Completely black. No text, no icons, just blackness. The window didn't even have a title. The "Start" screen (Metro) has all kinds of automatically updating tiles for things we have considerably less that zero interest in, like Sports. The stupid laptop even comes with EA Origin and Wildtangent games preinstalled (although that is probably Toshiba's fault, not Microsoft). I managed to setup up a local account for my wife without having to create a Microsoft online account, but then Skydrive failed even though I never accessed it nor would want to. My wife likes to play Spider Solitaire (hey it's no more stupid that flying cartoon planes around). Spider solitaire has been available with Windows since Win98. Not in Windows 8. You have to download an "app" from Microsoft's App store and this app forces you to look at advertisements while you play solitaire. Isn't that what I really want from an operating system? Constant advertisements? Then there's Media Center: was included with Windows 7; costs $99 extra with Windows 8.
My desktop runs on XP and will need to be upgraded before XP support ends next April. I definitely see Linux in my future except then I would lose programs I use like Visual Basic, Mathcad, and, I suspect, Aces High.

You really should spend some more time learning the English language. How you arrived at this conclusion is beyond reason.

How YOU arrived to the opposite conclusion is beyond reason. Why would MS care about your apps when it has a billion other users? The kill switch is for app store applications which MS needs to control. Simple as that.

Easy since all surface pros come with Windows 8 installed.

There are very easy fixes for your problems:
1) Install classic shell
2) Stop using the lame metro apps they're buggy and suck
3) Download a free solitaire from the gazillion options on the internet: Google or for example http://solitaire.vegard2.no/
4) Forget media center, download VLC or any other of the gazillion alternatives.

OK fair enough. So what are the technical reasons why you think Windows 8 couldn't be made as fast or faster than Windows 7 since they're largely the same operating system?

or install win7 and you wont have to deal with any of the problems. why buy win8 and spend time and effort to fix it to make it look like win7? benchmarks or no benchmarks the average user wont see any improvement with win8 over win7.
mrripley the problem isnt that we dont want to get out of "our comfort zone" as you have put it many times. the problem is that win8 sucks big time. and we shouldnt have to spend time to fix it, that should be microsoft's job.

Nah, Win8 doesn't suck at all. It's a great OS. What does suck is the new user interface and the metro apps. But those can be bypassed very easily, in fact it takes about 2 minutes to install classic shell. If that's too much then I don't know what to say anymore.

true but how long did it take you to learn how to do the replacement? or you gonna tell me that you instantly knew about classic shell when you installed win8? or did you spent some time researching?
so the two minutes is actually perhaps an hour or two?

Yes I read about classic shell a few years before Win8 was released. And when it was released, all internet forums were full of advices on how to disable the metro start screen using it. After classic shell a dozen of other alternatives appeared, most costing a few bucks to deliver much the same thing.
Anyone who asks or bothers to find out, will find the info they need. It's not 1980 anymore where the most information you got from computers was going to watch Matthew Broderick plug in his ancient modem in wargames lol.

in other words it doesnt really take 2 minutes to fix win8. but it takes perhaps hours of research to fix win8 to make it look like win7. that is if you really know what you are looking for.
so tell us again why buy win8 and spend some time in research to make it look like win7, when you can just buy win7?

NO all it took for anyone using AH was to write 2 lines of text to this forum and BAM there, they had the solution they needed. The same task could be achieved in mere seconds by using Google.
I'm not telling anyone not to get Win7 unless they happen to play BF4. But if someone got a copy of 8 with their new computer, it would be dumb (IMO) to spend extra money towards 7.

Just type win8 start menu as google search and you got an ad offering a solution as the first hit. If you're using Yahoo for searches you're already doing it wrong lol.

OK fair enough. So what are the technical reasons why you think Windows 8 couldn't be made as fast or faster than Windows 7 since they're largely the same operating system?
Well, seeing how Microsoft has done pretty much what I have done to make Windows 7 faster, I think Windows 8 is about as fast as it will get. Microsoft did remove some functionality in order to speed up Windows 8. I have not had to resort to that with Windows 7.
I have not spent a great deal of time trying to figure it out though. There are too many reasons I will never use Windows 8, or any of its family, so I am not going to waste time on it.
-

And exactly that is what we would like to know, what are those reasons?
Im perfectly happy with the win7 though. Still curious.
-
Because even though the list of 'improvements' is a long one, it is still a dog for people to use because it takes the people component and slows it down. Windows 7 is very well designed and very functional, so why MS decided to move away from the Windows concept and move to the Metro interface (non-Windows) is a mystery. The result is that there is no Windows anymore. Touch screen is cool, but I have that on Kindle and do not want it on my PC especially if that means losing the efficiency of the Windows 7 interface. Windows 8 is not efficient, except on the computing end and even then it does not save enough to make it worthwhile (and Skuzzy points out Windows 7 can be streamlined to work faster). Also, you can make Windows 7 use a touch screen if you really want to.
The whole reason there is a Windows 8 is because MS wants to make Windows a consumption vector by which they get more of your money. Why else would MS, a company known for selling their premiere OS, offer Windows 8 for a mere $40? The answer is simple. Windows 8 will open your wallet to them. The only really problem there is the Windows 8 app store is not a well stocked market at the moment. That will change.
-
Classic shell does not fix Win8. Win8 still insists on going to its tablet style interface at times and applications behave differently on Win8 than Win7.

If the user interface looks different 1 times per day that doesnt mean win8 is broken lol. If you get booted to the metro interface you probably have file associations linked to open files using the native apps, which you should fix as a first thing. Other than that what exactly do you mean by applications behaving differently?
