Title: VERY Erratic frame rates after some changes to my system!
Post by: 68valu on December 20, 2013, 08:53:23 PM
as the subject says, I changed my cpu from an e8500 Core 2 Duo to a Q9550 core 2 quad. My motherboard says it supports it and it runs fine except for aces high and I tried a few youtube videos and it stutters bad also. I also installed windows 7 64 bit from windows 7 32 bit. I installed the correct drivers for the motherboard as well as current video drivers from nvidea (EVGA gtx550)
With the original CPU and 32 bit operating system, i always had 59-60fps constant.

any ideas?

MSI p7n sli platinum
4x2gb ddr2 800
650W power supply
cable internet

Oh, this was a complete install on a different HDD than the original.

You do realize that the Q9550 is going to perform worse than the E8500, due to the slower clock rate?

Did you just update Windows, when you made the CPU change, or did you do a fresh install?

I did a fresh install on a different hard drive. I have the original drive and cpu in case I decide to switch back. I have an e8600 that I might try also. I think it is a driver/software issue but I don't know where to start.

Make sure you disable any power management.

Thanks Skuzzy.
nice having your knowledge available to the community.

is it possible that copying my AH maps, settings, skins ETC. from the 32 bit operating system into the AH folder after the 64 bit install is affecting the performance?

Yes!  If you copied all the files in the "settings" folder, then yes it could.

Of course, that is easy to verify.  Simply rename the folder and see what it performs like with a clean "settings" folder.

I actually did an uninstall and full download of the game. I'll try it this evening(after about an hour of remapping controls!) I'll post the results.

Thanks again Skuzzy!

OK after an uninstall and reinstall of both the video driver and AH, still very erratic frame rates :headscratch:

I had higher than normal frame rates (75 fps versus 60 that I usually get) that I have never had before, however the erratic fluctuation is still present.

Erratic frame rates could be caused by hundreds of things.  Usually it is the CPU being taken away from running the game to run other stuff.

With the slower quad core, you will get worse performance than with the faster E8500.  Just know that.  It very well could be that is the entire problem.

If your frame rate is going above the vertical refresh rate of the monitor, then vertical sync has either been disabled in the video card driver, or in the games "Video Settings" or the video card has no idea what type of monitor is attached to the computer.

OK, thanks Skuzzy
I am doing a  a complete format and install of the operating system as well as everything else. If the frame rates are still erratic, I will swap the quad processor with the e8600 I have. I am also reinstalling everything according to this:http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-031891.htm

I'll let you know my progress.

OK, I think I am back up and running.

Here is what I ended up doing:
I did the full re-install as per this order-http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-031891.htm- that got everything working properly as far as the system problems I was having (sound problems, windows shutting down ETC) except for the frame rate issue.

Skuzzy, I swapped the processor from the quad core q9550 back to my e8600 core 2 duo as the frame rates were still erratic. That fixed that problem. I did notice some stuttering on the crater map last night, but I always have minor issues on that map. Frame rates stayed steady 59-60 fps.

Thanks for the help Skuzzy.
That intel install order would make a good STICKY

You did not install the motherboard chipset drivers before installing the rest of the drivers?  That would cause a lot of problems.

I installed the video drivers before the MB drivers, but your thinking the processor being the problem was correct. It was causing the erratic frame rates. The other problems were mic not working, windows shutting down unexpectedly and a few other issues. I still had the erratic frame rates after the re-install, but everything else worked properly. Once I swapped the CPU the frame rate problem went away.
