Who says that's the greatest photo taken? :headscratch:
-
I do.
It is one of the first color photos taken by a man with a non-Earthly landscape. By having the Earth itself as the object of focus, this photo gives perspective to how small people actually are, while being symbolic as to the achievement of Humanity and the human spirit.
-
I do.
I watched them all.
I do, I do, I do.

truly an awe inspiring photo.
Greatest photo ever taken...well...this would have to be a contender also

Not even close. the Op was taken by human beings.
Truly to this date, the greatest photograph ever taken.

so was the Cassini shot...just with a reasonably long range wireless camera :p
I think the fact that the little white dot inside Saturn's rings at 10 o'clock is our earth makes it a similar perspective shot of awe inspiring magnitude. But, I will concede to your point by a slim margin

I agree, amazing photo and accomplishment. Truly epic. Now when are they gonna get some color shots of the moon, I mean really, its been years now......
A finite number of people in an infinite universe. Mathmatically we don't even exist. Yet here we are. :aok

What is that photograph from? It looks familiar, I've seen it somewhere, but can't recall as to what it's related to.

The disparity of his position between the photos makes it look like he backed up, assuming of course, that the wide shot was taken first.

Funny......I was going to go with the Tiananmen Square pic as well........that is until my wife corrected me after looking over my shoulder, and said that the greatest photo ever taken was our wedding photo

He didn't back up as much as the first tank tried to get around him and he again moved into it's path. Hence the two different "lanes" if you will.

No problem Ranjah. I never knew about the wide angle shot until I accidentally happened across it. I also didn't intend on the double post as the first one locked up Chrome.
Someone asked about my original pic and another posted a link. I merely tried to go a step further in that person's direction and post the wide angle which is astounding and still remember that whole thing unfolding during the 2nd semester of my Sophomore year of HS.

I would easily go with Apollo 11, as opposed to the OP's.

Except the picture that XxDaSTaRxx posted is heavily photo shopped. You cannot see Earth in the original.
The Tiananmen Square picture is no doubt fantastic; and arguably, as equally powerful as the picture I first posted.
But, when you judge as photograph, you have to take in all the elements that make up the greatness as a whole. Where I believe the Apollo 8 pic trumps all others contenders with equal profoundness, and symbolism, is this: the Apollo 8 photo is downright artistic in its layout. You have the foreground, which is the barren desert of gray lunar rock and sand. Then, isolated against the pure black of deep space, is an oasis of color, the Earth. Simply put, it's perfect.

everybody talks about what 1 person can do. you can see more than that. you can see the tank driver refusing to run him over, you can see the gunner not shooting him down, or the tank commander perhaps telling the driver to go around him. perhaps the man was telling them to stop and go back and the tank crew yelling him to move or he will die.
one thing is for sure, that man had guts and in a way, i think the tank crews did too. I am pretty sure none of them were alive soon after.

Theres only one human not in this Photo dead or alive, and he took the picture.

The human induced opinion is quite a funny and fickle thing.
I went ahead and googled "The greatest photograph ever taken."
The classic image of Sophia Loren jealously gazing upon Jayne Mansfield's barely clad breasts was close to the top of the list as per Google. However .... a little further down I found this one which in my opinion is much greater than anything posted here or there. :old:
