Title: Sodastream
Post by: Rondar on December 29, 2013, 09:13:47 PM
Does anybody have one of these?  If so, does the product taste any good?  And do you have to use their stuff or can you use stuff like the liquid mio or Dasani flavor drops?

Their flavors are ok.
You can carbonate anything you want.

Of the few people I have talked to that had them, they were more of a novelty item that they lost interest in after a while

I think this is either the third of fourth rebirth of the Sodastream, I know I had one back in the 80's over in England then again when I first arrived in USA I got another. Not sure if I missed any releases but here they are again and yes the novelty soon wears off.

Except wine.  Don't try that it doesn't work.
Almost anything else though.

Ultimately when it comes down to it... it is cheaper to buy fizzy drinks from the supermarket

Don't waste your money.  We have one, the soda taste like diet soda.  Aftertaste is nasty.  I refuse to drink it.

This is almost fully true. There are differences with the flavorings (some of them are diet so no wonder they taste like diet soda lol).

The biggest problem is the actual carbonization. The machine doesn't achieve factory level carbonization without having the drink sit there for hours and any fresh carb is going to leave a side taste to the drink that evaporates with time. So as previously said its more of a novelty item that kids love to have but they get bored to it in a jiffy.

Commercial systems use much higher carbonization pressures than what is possible with soda stream.

hehe, yes they do but I can't drink diet soda so none was bought for ours.  Maybe it is the fresh carb as you say, but the bottom line is that the machine is sitting at home collecting dust.

My girl has one, it was THE thing to have. She couldn't live without it, it was all she talked about like it was water/food and she had been starving for her entire life....

That was 4-6 months ago. Now the thing collect dusts on my counter and the flavor bottles take up space in my cupboard. It is pure novelty in our house. DO NOT LET YOUR LADY BUY ONE!

P.S.

The flavours are OK.... It's good for trying to cut down on pure sugar cola's....

I mix the ginger ale from the soda stream with apple and cranberry juice- have cut down on soda costs a lot, I like it with mixing with Orange juice also

kids like the root beer and - mellow yellow- substitute
i think it is worth it, trying to get myself off those diet pepsi killer drinks and get the kids off the corn syrup mixed soda pops

I found a sugar free juice with 'tutti frutti' flavour that works really well with Sodastream. It tastes like fizzy candy without the typical bitter after taste of Sodastream.

I have one, which I purchased for a low price.  It doesn't replace any name brand sodas, but it's great for a quick 1 liter of something if we're out of the real stuff.  It's also convenient at parties.

Have you tried a Wine Aerator? There is a remarkable difference in a Glass not aerated and one that is.

If you want fizzy red wine you have to drink it fresh. Unmatured wine is better than any soda pop I've tried.

It doesn't make wine fizzy, it's a breath speeder. As you know, wines are supposed to breathe before serving, but people are in such a hurry getting drunk of good wine that they can't wait the time needed for decanting.

I got a Soda Stream as a birthday gift almost two years ago. Haven't opened it yet... I suppose it might be a good alternative for commercial soda's to make fizzy beverages out of home made juices, free from additives. As someone said, supermarket fizzies may be even cheaper than the aroma substances.

We have one and use it ALL the time.  We flavor with MIO water "enhancer".  The Cherry, Orange, and Grape flavors work great!  I use the Black Cherry MIO Energy for a bit of caffeine!!

I was referring to the previous poster who wrote about using Sodastream on wine. Unmatured red and white wine actually contain a lot of carbon acid and taste like a fizzy soft drink despite having 10+ percent alcohol in it. It's just too bad it's so difficult to transport as the bottles can't be sealed due to the ongoing fermentation process that would make the bottles explode if they were sealed.

Sparkling wine was actually considered as unmature or spoiled untill a gentleman called Dom Perignon made drinking it popular.
