He mentions getting into a spin once that he couldn't get out of.

Here's footage of P-39 spin and tumble tests, the last one in the series being one the pilot couldn't get out of and had to bail out:

Great video. So funny that even back then they confused the P-39 and the P-63 (at least two P-63 shots in that vid). Lol!
