The P39 is one interesting plane to fly in AH. Can't say I ever pit it in flat spin.
If only it had a slightly better gun package and just a touch more power it would have been quite a performer. You can learn a lot flying thee P39. I did.

I fly the p39Q a LOT, i love everything about it. Reminds me of a under powered jet that "pulls" itself through the air vs. pushing. But the flight is exactly the same.
The major problem is the controls, at stall speed you loose all control to one side but i have never encountered spins and flips and loss of control like the aircrafts shown in this clip, it really makes my stomach turn to know the p39 could "yank" itself out of the air like that. Altho the reason the aircraft becomes so much more "out of control" is simply because the 39 has SUCH sensitive flight controls, the plane never really had a chance to "fly itself" with these test pilots yanking the stick in every direction in desperation trying to save a aircraft that was designed to "fly itself out of a stall" provided you have A: level wing flight and B: Power OFF. After the nose dips back power up and slowly pull back on the stick, just like you would any jet or heavy/underpowered fighter. Too fast and a wing will dip your engines weight will pull your tail and spinning you will go.
Oddly the only time i have EVER EVER EVER gotten my 39 to any point of a flat spin is ALWAYS while going 120mph ISA while pulling hard on the stick, will my "tail" comes out from under me, ever then the spins "as it feels from the cockpit" is never like a flat spin "like seen in top gun" its always one wing dips "mostly the left" the tail "looses it" and you loose all stick control to the right, thus you cant pull out because your flight controls refuse to bring that right wing back down to level flight. "Admitably i never had a recording of this so i cant say exactly what mannor my aircraft was in before i hit the dirt" And it almost ALWAYS happens under 1k. i have had in no situation what so ever, ever..put a 39 in any kind of uncontrolable stall or spin over 5k. I don't know why, it just hasn't happend to me yet. At any rate if you "loose her" slap your power to 0% level out and power back up. Aircraft in aces high are very forgiving once power is turned off, for some reason the prop blades dont behave as if they need to spin down, up or over rev. meh..arcade.
I recommend a movie called "flight check fighters:p-39" It should teach you everything you need to know, ever a few "secrets" about the aircraft itself, even how the fule system works and how to deal* with wing damage and leaking fuel.
This is still a "decent" movie tho, watch it..40 minutes of intell can be the difference of going nose down into the dirt and limping home on 15gal of gas with 5 kills. ;) "goto 14:40" to see the fuel diagram"

So after watching this who wants to steal a p39 with me? :D

It looked like it took several thousand feet to recover those spins but is hard to tell with no reference points to judge by and the narrator never mentoned the altitude of the P39s or the average altitude lost while trying to recover.
The crashed p39 at the end of the clip was in incredible shape for a Aircraft that fell from that altitude. I was expecting to see a debris field not a fairly intact aircraft.

I thought the same thing. I wonder what it was doing right before it hit. A flat spin maybe?
