Some of the weather news/ warnings I read this evening; heads up!
"At those temperatures, exposed skin can get frostbitten in minutes and hypothermia can quickly set in as wind chills may reach 50, 60 or even 70 below zero F (45.5, 51 or even 56.7 below zero C)."

The coldest I've done is about -35 below as advanced party as part of 11th Cav. I cannot imagine what -70 degrees is like. Holy crap! That -35 was shocking and we were full on Mickey Moused up.
boo

Jumped onto the frozen Yukon River near Galena, AK….it was -47 when we stepped out of the Hercs and got down to -65 that night with winds of 30 and gusting. Never got above -30 or so for the entire field problem.

lol, the new theory is global warming will actually cause global cooling. :eek:

Yup. :rock

Its not a new theory. They've been warning all along that global warming will cause freak extreme weathers in both cold and hot scale. The rise in sea temperature also creates heavy snowstorms.
But who knows. Last year (and two years before that) this time of year we had -20c and 1 meter of snow. Now we have +6C and no snow. Suits me... less heating expenses.
-
we had -20 2 nights ago, and I have to say man I love my pellet stove :rock we only had it turned up half way and it was still 74 in our house, was nice to heat the house for about $10 that day vs probably $90 for oil. on average, til it gets to around 10 out, we only burn a bag a day, which is $4.65 :aok I couldnt imagine anything colder than 35 or 40 below, I have seen 40 below and wow
-
I was really looking forward to lots of snow today, but alas, I live in Central Ohio and it's raining right now. I should never get my hopes up... :o
-
Yup. :rock
I agree totally.
Jay heads up! We're about to get blasted!

A little advise for those who are not used to this kind of deep freeze: Fill up any water container you have. The water supply will likely freeze. Have your tap water running (a steady stream, not on full, but not a drip either) it will delay the onset of freezing. If you have exposed water piping in your home (typically inside the outer walls or in the ground outside) they will freeze unless you empty them. If your water pipes freeze shut the main valve; if the pipes rupture they'll flood your home when the water melts. If your car is not parked in a heated garage at all times: Make sure your coolant has enough anti-freeze in it. Make sure your engine oil and gear oil can take the temperature. If your coolant freezes you'll end up with a ruptured cooling system. Worst case you'll have a cracked engine block.
Stay warm. Stay safe. <S>

:aok You're on!
Yeah it doesn't get really cold here until February or March. -30 to -50 degrees centigrade is typical winter cold here in the inland parts of the country. The coastal areas are usually no more than -15 to -20 centigrade due to the Gulf-stream.

I like snow.

Over the past week here in Ontario people are reporting loud booms houses/buildings shaking. I didn't feel it yet, never heard of this I understand they call it cryoseism /frost quake caused by rapid drop the temperature and water saturated earth crust .But if you watch the second video on the link, they don't know for sure what's going on, now are talking about some kind electric discharge from the ground caused by very low temperatures;

It is evidence that the US is the main reason for global warming :old:

Global oil and coal based electricity production for large industry is the main reason for pollution (notice Im not saying there is global warming). Do you see anyone doing anything about that? No. Because they cant tax the industry too much without angrying the lobbyists who are paying the congressmens bills.

its 0 degrees right now in NE Oklahoma with a wind chill of about -15...brisk...Fixing to load up trackhoe as this freezing weather has caused a substantial water leak in my district :bhead Be sure to let your water run folks because it will freeze up in these temps :aok

If you live in a potential freeze area you need two insulate your water channels instead of running water lol. Or at least install heating cables. They sell self adjusting heating cables that can be installed directly inside water tubing. The cable will warm the water to about 5 degrees celsius and consumes 10-14 watts of electricity typically.

The cold front is moving here also, we got 12-15 inches of snow last evening/night but was mild, since this morning the temperature is dropping quick and strong cold NW wind;
I just read the Indianapolis mayor "outlaws" driving, lol; maybe good idea; NOAA temp map shows -39 degrees windchill in Indi now;many people don't have the vehicles prepared for winter;

Our Indy office is closed today. I get the luxury of driving up to Grand Rapids tomorrow morning for an evening training class. It should be a fun drive heading into the wind the whole way.
Jay, I'll be in Lansing on Thursday, cmon down, I'll buy ya a soda. :D

This part of IL the thermometer outside the house was at -10 at 7am, now at -1. Calm wind as of right now. Got a foot of snow with a drift at the front porch 2ft deep.
