I fly 1/4 and 1/5 scale aircraft for different manufactures and this weekend I get to maiden a new Corsair. It has a Saito 84cc Radial gas engine that sounds pretty real. Its a 7.1 ft wingspan, 32 pound aircraft with rotating retracts, nav and landing lights, retractable tail wheel, and a 23 x 12 three blade prop. :rock
You can see the build thread here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2071116 (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2071116)

thats a sharp looking bird :aok :airplane: How did you form the lenses for your lights? I love how those engines sound :rock the big moki radial really sounds nice. I have been working on a 1/4 scale piper pawnee for like 2 years now which should be done but been doing other stuff around the house.
-
Wow! That is slick. I use to fly a lot when I was younger. Great hobby. The changes in the last few years is just about wild.
-
That is bad!!
-
Thanks fellas, I can't wait to here that radial in the air along with her simulated gun port whistles. Gonna be cool
-
Magnificent! :aok
-
Oh thats a beauty. Do post the flight video.
-
nice , are you going to "weather" it up in any way ? I used to go to model shows are the nicest kit I saw was a Hawker Hurricane 1/4 that had been weathered . It looked nicer than the brand new spitfire next to it . The guy had even "patched" the fabric to make it look like battle repairs .
-
Beautiful! :aok
And the engine sounded great!
If you don't mind, how much does an engine like that cost?
-
Found a small video of the engine running in the plane for a taxi test on Charlotte Aeromodelers Facebook page. Sounds so cool.

COndor, you haven't told us how the flight went. It didn't crash, did it?
-
No, Tried to fly it last Saturday but had 10-15 cross winds and very gusty. Just wasn't worth the risk. Sunday was rainy. This coming Sunday is shaping up for a flight though. Weather just hasn't been very cooperative with us the last few weeks.
Maidens on these are just nerve racking. Since you never know what she is going to do on the first flight you at least try and put the odds in your favor with weather.
I am sure she will do fine. Its just better on the first flight getting trims setup if you are not fighting gusty winds.
-
with the wind, couldn't you do CV take offs? :D
-
Yeah, If we could turn the field into the wing I would be golden. Crosswinds aren't really that much of a problem (within reason anyway) Fair weather pilots don't get a lot of stick time in the RC world so you either adapt to the conditions or stay home. Normally, I would fly in the conditions last week but a maiden on $6000.00 with the work involved is more than enough stress for one flight.
Taking off is only part of the deal. Landing is the real pressure point. Once I have a couple of landings with flaps and gear extended to see how she does it becomes just another airplane. Until then, its an unknown.
You have to find that perfect combination of speed brakes, flaps, throttle, and glide slope. (obviously) But it's much easier in a real plane than it is standing on the ground using your instincts and judgement.
Normally I will do some stall testing at higher altitude before I attempt the first landing and gusty wind just reaks havoc on my judgement of how the plane is reacting.
Now that I am done whining about it, I am looking forward to this weekends flight. Video to come later.

Thanks for the update. I don't RC but the brothers do and every time they try a new a/c they are a nervous wreck.

ok 2 blades for the AAF and 3 for the Navy?!! :huh

ok 2 blades for the AAF and 3 for the Navy?!! :huh
I know, Right! 4 blade props don't work very well in the RC world. They need 3-4000 RPM with lots of pitch to operate. Our engines turn 8000. IF someone made a gear reduction drive they would work well
-
I think it was Byron Originals made a reduction drive for a mustang back in the 90s http://www.ebay.com/itm/Byron-Originals-Byrodrive-35cc-quadra-Motor-Engine-byron-originals-/321261836830?nma=true&si=0CZO9X8Sr0SKYlR5rahKppjKne8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
never got to see one in action though

cool best of luck with maiden flight and have fun.

I used to fly the Byron Mustang back in the 80s and the F16. They were the top of the heap back in the day.
-
yeah I remember the pony when I was a kid used to love that plane haha :rock what ever happened to them?
-
The Old Man died and the company is now making Byron fuels and patio furniture. They sold all the original molds to a company called Iron Bay but the guy who owns it now is a real jerk.
-
oh thats too bad, they had quite a few nice looking birds as I remember. My dad has the 4.2 ci engine that they had, the muffler mounts to the back of it and acts as the motor mount as well, pretty cool set up. Are you running DLE gasoline jobs in your big planes?
-
I have many DLE engines. I know the engine your describing with the exhaust engine mount. It looks like a re-entry vehicle.
-
yes indeed it is quite strange how it worked, has clamps that go around the muffler that bolts to the formers, there were 2 mounts I think. I think that they could have taken that design and put it to glow engines as well, then for the planes that have a belly dump exhaust it would be more scale
-
well done !
