Title: Possibly Picking Up Guitar.
Post by: skorpx1 on January 15, 2014, 07:02:20 PM
Lately I have been giving some thought on picking up playing the guitar. I am already quite proficient at bass playing and i'm not exactly sure if i'd want to jump into guitars or just stick to the bass. I don't think learning the guitar would be too hard seeing that I already have the bass down. On top of that I need to buy a good guitar amp along with a good guitar.

If anyone out there has some guitar experience please speak up. If I do start on guitar what make/model guitar/amp would be good for me?

Honestly, my advice is to start acoustic...doesn't even have to be acoustic-electric.  Just a plain ole box guitar.

get an accoustic.  Get good at that, and electric will be easy.  :rock

Is there really a difference between acoustic/electric? I never noticed a difference (Play-wise) with acoustic/electric on the bass.

Typically acoustic strings will be a higher gauge and will have a higher action, but not in all cases.  Of course, that will help build the finger muscles (I'm sure you already have).  Electric is always easy to play thanks to power chords.

Youtube and tablature are your friend!  The main difference between guitar and bass is building chords.  There's a few very common chord shapes that can be used all over the neck.  You should already have the arpegios down.  :rock

Go forth and Rock!

Guess the big question is "why?". Got my first Alvarez in '69 and since then have never met a "good" bassist/guitarist. I know, they gotta be out there. Might have even met a few and never had the subject come up but I've never actually seen anyone prove it firsthand. Two different disciplines. May as well consider viola. Takes a long time to get really good at most things. Some longer than others. Especially if the joy's gone. I guess if you're bored then by all means go for it.

If you gotta, depending on budget, a decent Squire and some little Line6 combo should get you started.

Two of the guys I play with can go back and forth from rhythm,  lead, and bass like it's nothing.  One of them even plays drums and keyboard, too.  I envy those people.

Definitely start with an acoustic - reason being (as Banshee said), they are "harder" to play. The action tends to be higher (barre chords) strings are harder to press etc etc - electric comes very easy after learning the basics on an acoustic.

"I used the word harder figuratively, its easy to play either, its just practice, but acoustic will ensure you have a better technique"

Definitively acoustic first. If you feel like you'd be playing mostly electric later, get an acoustic with an electric style neck. There's a wide variety of necks in all kinds of guitars, as well as basses for what I know, so go find one that fits your hand.

The main reason for learning acoustic first is that you really have to learn how to play. With an electric you can fake by overdrive and other effects, masking your lack of skill in a wall of buzz. With an acoustic you'll actually have to play every note you'd want to be heard. And not play those you don't want to hear!

As for which guitar to buy, for a new player, bang for the buck, I'd go with Yamaha (was actually my first guitar). As with any instrument, play a load of them to find the "one" - you'll find one that just fits, plays as you like it etc. It's definitely worth taking time to find it.

Amp wise, take yer pick, personally for acoustic amp's I like Marshall's - suggest at least 50w or more (practice amp wise) or bigger if your budget allows. Fender make some real nice solid state amps as well (my personal preference for electric).

Washburn make some real nice acoustic's - but they tend to cost more, again, it's down to your personal preference and budget.

Welcome to a new journey,

Yeah, I hear you. Just make sure you work a little theory in there while you're at it. The more you grasp the easier it is to transition.

Usually you try to build up finger strength, usually tougher to push down, then go to electric. But since your a bass weanie.... :neener: i mean player, cough, you should be alright. Welcome to the world of 6 strings!  :rock

As for guitars, I've got a G series Takamine.  I love it.  It was originally $800 straight from Takamine, but I found it in store for like $550.  You definitely wanna play as many as you can to find what exactly works for you.  I've go a $100 Maestro (by Gibson) that I still pick on every now and then.  It's beat up, the bridge is superglued back together, and it still sounds pretty good around a campfire.

I have a 2008 Gibson Les Paul Studio that is by far my favorite.  I also own a Gretsch G5120, a Fender Telecaster, and an Ovation Celebrity CC44 electric acoustic.  The neck on the Ovation is a little thin for my liking, but I really like the look and feel of it.  With the right strings it sounds great too.  Whenever I feel like my electric playing is getting a little sloppy, I will go to the acoustic for a few weeks straight.  It seems to help my electric playing alot.  Think of it as running a mile with 5lb weights on your ankles then suddenly taking them off.

You could also just use heavy blues gauge strings on that tele...  Makes the tone a lil sharper, and strums more like an acoustic, feel wise.
