I just read this and was completely astonished http://news.yahoo.com/japan-wwii-soldier-hid-jungle-until-1974-dies-091014526.html about a Japanese WW2 soldier that hid in the jungles of the Phillpines until the 1970's believing WW2 was still ongoing.. Hiroo Onoda says he was only following orders to never surrendur.. A former commanding officer was able to get him to finally give up.. During the 30 odd years in the jungle..Onoda continued fighting with Phillipine forces and was responsible for several deaths!! He died 91 years old in Tokyo.

It's an interesting story about the kid who found him too.
There were several holdouts that lasted decades after the war and various stories that there may have been more. At least Lt Onoda was able to enjoy some years not at war.
