Title: Item Identification (Russian)
Post by: jay on January 25, 2014, 02:08:58 PM
So i bought an ammo pouch for my Nagant today, and the odd thing is it came with a small tin of cosmoline, a multitool (Which only had the largest mark on it) and literally....A piece of steel about 2 inches in length and the diameter of a BB attached to a piece of string, I'm puzzled, What the hell could it be?? o.o

Old school cleaning kit?  Drop it down the barrel, attach swab, and pull back out?

Well the string it is attached to is about 2-3 feet worth, And it's just a piece of steel, no filament or wires.

(producing picture now)

Edit: Forgot to mention IT'S SMOOTH

Using my knife as a example, but the piece of steel is smooth to a point, and it looks like (Don't know if you can see it) there is a loop on the end of the string as if to hang it on something, that is why i was thinking wind gauge.

Yup. that is your bore cleaning tool. I don't know how exactly it is used because I always use an aftermarket kit with a cleaning rod. It may also be called a bore snake.

From all the older bore brushes i've seen http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAcc.htm (http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAcc.htm) they all have grooves of some sort or indentions, his one is smooth.

Well i actually had no interest in the entire cleaning kit, bought the pouches and it (Along with a small tin of cosmoline [IN A PLASTIC BAG THANKFULLY] and what i do believe a old knockoff multitool) And i got the pouches for 10$ so i'm happy and the pouches are in rather good condition!\

Edit: And if it was for the cross T barrel rod thing, why could it be attached to such a ludicrous string??

No, the thing with the string is a bore cleaner. The string is attached to a small hole at one end and it got an elongated hole in the other end right?

Just an elongated piece of metal attached to a 3 or so foot string

Edit: Sorry for the S&@T lighting

Strange.

Quite, the string is quite old so i do believe it's the original string, the only thing i could think of was a really really really crude wind gauge, but even then you don't need 3 feet worth of string on it.

Its a pull through. metal drops down barrel from breach end, section of cleaning cloth is put in the loop and you pull it through the bore. Better than a cleaning rod because it doesn't scratch the bore. Problems arise if your piece of cloth is too big and gets wedged. Cleaning cloth rolls are graduated so you only tear off the right amount :old:

Now that actually makes a lick of sense, Just don't see a need for three feet of rope, sure it's a Nagant, But it's not that big  :lol

But thanks guys for all your input on this <S>
