Title: Ugh
Post by: BaldEagl on January 26, 2014, 04:38:43 PM
I logged on to play last night when I experienced a graphics freeze that forced me to do a hard boot.  While that happens to me from time to time in the game this one seemed a little more disturbing as it also messed with the color.

I rebooted, went to log back in and didn't even get that far before the same thing happened.  I shut down and let the computer cool off for a couple of hours then rebooted.  Everything seemed back to normal but as I watched my system monitors I noticed the MCP temp continuing to rise gradually.  It plateaued at 71 degrees C surfing the Internet.  I shut it down for the night.

I just spent the past four hours or so tearing the system apart, cleaning everything and putting it back together.  My north bridge heatsink and GPU heatsink were both about 50% blocked so I hope that was the problem.  All the fans are working.

I'm just about to plug it back in and turn it on.  Wish me luck.

I guess I was just overdue for a good cleaning.

At idle my CPU temps are down 10 degrees, GPU down 14 degrees, System down 2 degrees and MCP down 16 degrees.

 :aok

A good lesson for all of us.

By the way.  We have been using this blower for cleaning our computers (http://www.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500P-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001U899HQ/ref=pd_cp_hi_3).  I liked it so much, I bought one for home use.  No more using my leaf blower to clean out my computers. :)

I picked it up as well, right after going through Skuzzy's link.  What a beast.

I've had one of those for a couple of years now. You have to be careful with the narrow nozzle. It's a lot more powerful than Dust-off.  :D

If your case is a little dirty, you may want to clean it outdoors.  It's cleaned dust from every corner of my case, and I didn't think to take it outside first...  :lol

I always do the cleaning outside my garage using a regular compressor. Just have to be careful not to use too much pressure on fans etc.

You definately don't want to blow all that dust back to your house if you do your annual or bi-annual cleanup :)

I put mine on the deck railing, block the fan blades with picks and use air compressor.

Skuzzy,

This may sound like a terrible question since you've already been using it but is there any moisture at all in these or do you find its blowing dry enough air not to give it a thought?

The only moisture possible is from the ambient air, as it is only moving ambient air.  It has a filter on the intake to remove particles so the air is just cleaned up ambient air.  It does warm the air, slightly, as the air is also used to cool the motor while it operates.

A lot less chance of moisture in this blower, than from compressed, canned air.

I take the precaution of taping down the case/CPU/GPU fans to prevent them from rotating as that generates current, which is not a good thing.

You are welcome.  I have found a few good uses for this little blower.

Blow the dust out from the refrigerator coils.  Blow leaves out of crevices in the house (especially around the upstairs patio).  Dry off engine parts coming out of the cleaning vat.

The blower is built like a tank.
