On 9 May, 1940, the eve of the Battle of France, Hitler proclaimed to his General Staff: “Gentlemen, you are about to witness the most famous victory in history!”. At dawn the next morning Wehrmacht forces attacked the neutral countries of the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium, drawing the combined British and French forces arrayed to oppose a German invasion of France through the low countries. Fall Gelb had begun.
