Title: N1k, solved
Post by: AKcurly on June 21, 2001, 03:13:00 AM
Since my hero Milenko flies a N1K, I've spent the last two days checking them out and I can now report there's a sure-fire way to never lose to a N1K.  Never fly towards them.   :D  The damn things can lead turn a mongoose!

Tonight, I noticed Hblair-bin-saud [of car bombing fame] flying a N1K.  Ordinarily, this would be of great concern given his gunnery skills.  However, I finally noticed N1Ks will only carry 2 250kg bombs, so no sweat - he can't car bomb with the damn things!  He'll switch back to planes with more ordnance.

not only that, they can zoom climb with a higher-E 109g10.

and from the g10's cockpit:

I just had the strangest think happen with the N1kG10 film tac.  The first time I watched it, I was in the cockpit of the G10 as it crept up from behind and below you.  It went into a sharp <more on that> steep climb and rolled over.  I could no longer see how well the N1K was climbing so I tried to replay the film.  Only this time, I was in the N1K (Your) cockpit and the G10 was behind and below gaining.... and it didn't show any of the N1K climb.

One thing that was obvious from both films was that one plane used a gentler minimal elevator turn to transition into the climb while the other used a high g maneuver.  It would give better results if you had to planes co-speed side by side and kept that way all the way into the verticle.  Until then, there are too many differences to call the information valid.

thnx deja, had linked to wrong n1k vs g10. the filename shouldve been n1kVSg10, not n1kg10. <S>

Reviewed the film tac... The G10 zoomed higher by about 500 feet with about a 20mph e advantage and a sharper pull up.... was there something you were trying to prove with it?

pretty good zoom climb for a plane supposed to have a poor climb rate. Also, look at the amount of E lost when the high-g turn up happened. I also used a good amount of rudder during the climb to keep the 109 near my nose.the g10 also torque-twists near 100 mph, the n1k went to 80mph or so without any effect..in fact, it nose downed by itself, a little rudder and you stay level flight no problem. Pretty neat how the n1k does all that against a G10 on wep zoom climb.  :)

Good thing its going to get re-visited next version or so.

Climb rate and zoom ability are totally different beasts Tac.  You know that.  Try the same experiment with a p-51 or a P-47.

As for Torque effect.. can't really argue with that one... since I don't know the wingspan of the aircraft... nor the torque effect generated by each aircraft.  Do you?
